PARISH LIFE AND MINISTRY

PRAYER AND WORSHIP Solemnity of the

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Monday, August 15 is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although this year it is not a Holy Day of Obligation because it falls on a Monday, it is still a Solemnity and still an important day on the Church’s liturgical calendar. Also, as a parish whose patron is the Blessed Mother, it’s especially appropriate for us to acknowledge all Marian feasts.

All parishioners are encouraged to attend Mass:

Monday, August 15, 2016

6:30 a.m.; 12:15 p.m. or 7:30 p.m.

Monday, August 22 at 7:00 p.m.

The daring, triumphant story of Esther is brought to vivid life in this new musical by composer Erik Whitehill. Through the story of Esther, travel to the citadel of Susa where King Ahasuerus names Esther his new queen - and where Esther faces the decision of her life. Will wicked Haman prevail? Or will selfless Mordecai convince Esther to trust in God and save her people? With a nod to Broadway, Esther is filled with memorable melodies - from fun and whimsical reprises to expressive, heartfelt ballads.

REMINDER REGARDING REMINDER REGARDING REMINDER REGARDING REMINDER REGARDING THE COMMUNION FASTTHE COMMUNION FASTTHE COMMUNION FASTTHE COMMUNION FAST

Please remember that we are supposed to observe a Communion Fast before receiving Holy Communion. This means we do not eat any foods or drink any liquids for one hour before receiving Holy Communion, the only exception being water or medi-cine. This also means that we are not to chew gum during Mass, and certainly not while we are coming forward to receive Holy Communion. Let’s be sure we are appropriately prepared to receive Holy Commun-ion by observing this important rule of the Church.

PRAYER AND WORSHIP

The Way You Are Dressed DOES Matter!

Please dress appropriately for Mass during the summer months. Attire that is meant for the beach, barbecues, boat or athletic field is inap-propriate for Mass and is disrespectful to the Lord as we offer ourselves to Him through the sacred actions in which we are engaged. It is al-so disrespectful to one’s brothers and sisters in the community. Your cooperation in continuing to dress up and dress appropriately for Mass during the summer weather is appreciated.

Evening Prayer All are invited to pray Evening Prayer on Saturdays and Sundays after the 5:00 p.m. Mass. Here we pray the psalms, listen to the Word of God and give thanks to God for the blessings of the day. Evening Prayer is usually about ten to fifteen minutes in length. So come and pray…

The Monday night Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help has been a longstanding OLPH tradition. Each

Monday, parishioners pray to seek the help and assis-tance of the Lord for healing, family, children and the needs of the world, seeking the intercession of the Blessed Mother. Following the Novena prayers, Ex-position of the Blessed Sacrament takes place. The evening concludes with veneration of a relic of St. Catherine Laboure. Take some time each Monday to join in the OLPH Novena.

Prayer for PeacePrayer for PeacePrayer for PeacePrayer for Peace

This Holy Hour for Peace, with prayers focusing on the intention of peace, will be held on the second, third and fourth Sunday evenings of the month from

7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Lord Jesus Christ,

who are called the Prince of Peace, Who are yourself our peace and our reconciliation,

Who so often said ‘Peace to you’, Grant us peace!

Make all men and women witnesses of truth, justice and brotherly love.

Banish from their hearts whatever might endanger peace. Enlighten our rulers that they may guarantee

and defend the great gift of peace. May all peoples of the earth become as brothers and sisters.

May longed-for peace blossom forth and reign always over us all. AMEN

Mary, Queen of Peace, Pray for us! (Pope Saint John XXIII)

On the nights of Summer Evening Prayer, the OLPH Novena Prayers will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. in the Church. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will not be held on these nights so that all may participate in Evening Prayer.

PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS AND OF OTHERS

Once Mass begins, please do not walk up the center aisle, or across the center aisle in the middle of the pews, or across the front pews. If you arrive late, please use a side aisle and be seated in one of the side sections; if you need to get up during Mass, please use a side aisle. Walking around in a prominent and central area during Mass is dis-tracting to worshipers and to the ministers in the sanctuary. Thank you for your cooperation and under-standing in showing proper respect at Mass by being attentive to your surroundings.

DO YOU WANT TO DEEPEN YOUR FAITH?DO YOU WANT TO DEEPEN YOUR FAITH?DO YOU WANT TO DEEPEN YOUR FAITH?DO YOU WANT TO DEEPEN YOUR FAITH?

The Junior Legion of Mary is a perfect blend of prayer and works that will lead you to a moral life, and you will have fun doing it. Some of the works we are currently involved with is the May crowning of the Blessed Mother, helping serve at the Community Meals, making rosaries, visiting nursing homes, sending cards to our military, just to name a few.

The word Legion means army. The Legion of Mary is our Blessed Mother’s army. Our ammunition is the rosary and the Miraculous Medal. There is no obligation to join. Come to a meeting held in Room 24 of the School at 1:30 p.m. on any Sunday and see what it is all about. There will be two members of the Senior Legion of Mary present at all meet-ings. Refreshments will be served.

COMMUNITY OF PRAISE The Community of Praise is a welcoming group of parishioners committed to living in the Holy Spirit. We meet each week to praise God in song, pray with each other, study Scriptures, and support each other on our journey of faith. We support the parish by our prayers, by joining with other parish groups for special projects, and by offering the Life in the Spirit Seminar. All are welcome to come and pray and praise with us, just once every week. We meet in Room 16 of the school every Tuesday night from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m.

FIRST SUNDAY DEVOTIONS

All are invited to come and pray with our parish community.

First Sunday Devotions —Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

will take place on Sunday, August 7 at 7:00 p.m.

What’s called a rollover is actually a

“qualified charitable distribution”

that can be made to our Parish.

If… 1. You are at least 70 1/2 years old on the date

you make your gift.

2. Your IRA is a traditional or Roth.

3. You don’t exceed your personal maximum of

$100,000 per year in qualified charitable distribu-

tions.

4. You will not have to report your distribu-tion as income. It will be free of federal and

New York State income tax, and it will count

toward your required minimum distribution

(RMD).

The best way for you to start is with your IRA

custodian. Tell them you want to make a "qualified charitable distribution". In most cases you will only have to fill out a simple form. VERY IMPORTANT!! Your gift must go directly from

your IRA to the Parish. If you receive the money first then you’ll be taxed on it like any other distribution.

Example: Mrs. Connors, age 76, has $125,000 in a tradi-tional IRA and would like to contribute $5,000 to her Parish in 2016. Upon hearing of the Charitable IRA Rollover op-portunity, she directs the custodian of her IRA to transfer this amount not later than December 31, 2016 directly to the Parish as a 2016 gift. She will not be subject to income tax on her $5,000 qualified charitable distribution.

This informaon is not intended and should not be construed as

legal, tax or investment advice. For such advice, please consult an

a:orney, tax advisor or investment professional.

The IRA Charitable

Rollover is back and

is now permanent!

Readings for the Week Take time each day to read the daily readings of the Church.

PREPARING FOR Sunday, August 14, 2016—The Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus said to his disciples, “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” Luke 12:49

Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10

The cost of discipleship is a theme in all three readings today. Following God’s will often guarantee resistance from those who don’t want to hear the truth, which is what happened to Jeremiah. Jerusalem was under siege from the armies of Babylon. Jeremiah prophesied that defeat, deportation, and exile were inevitable and King Zedekiah should surrender, all because the people had forsaken God and turned to worshipping false gods. But the king was persuaded to take action to silence Jeremiah by having him thrown into a cistern to die. Jeremiah suffered for being faithful to the one true God, although he did not die. An honest man, Ebed-melech, risked his life to save Jeremiah by having the king rescind his order.

Hebrews 12:1-4

The author of the letter to the Hebrews describes in the chapter preceding today’s selection many of the great heroes of the Old Testament, such as Abraham and Moses. They, as well as all of the saints who have risked their lives to follow God since then, make up a great “cloud of witnesses” that surrounds us and gives us great examples of what it means to be a dis-ciple. These saints persevered in running the race by laying aside the bur-den of sin that weighed them down and took up their cross for the sake of the ultimate joy in the world to come. For many of them the cost of this struggle was the shedding of their blood as martyrs. We should not think that this ultimate sacrifice is a thing of the past since newspapers tell us almost daily of the persecution that Christians endure around the world.

Luke 12:49-53

Today’s Gospel reminds us that even neighbors and family members will oppose us when we speak the truth that they don’t want to hear. Jesus makes no apology for the turmoil he and his message will bring. He came to proclaim the Kingdom of God and he knows that some will embrace it and others will reject it. Jesus understands this and alerts his followers both then and today that the road will not be easy. Division will come, not because Jesus wants it, but because it’s inevitable, just as oil and water don’t mix and the smallest flame will dispel darkness. Jesus is telling us that controversy will accompany the proclamation of the Gospel.

Gospel Reflection Questions…. After reading next Sunday’s Gospel take some time to pray on it before you come to Mass. Use the questions below to aid your reflection.

1.According to this Gospel, what did Jesus come on earth to do? What does he wish? What is the “fire” he wants the earth consumed with? Does part of that fire consume you? 2. God seems to have a radical, unconditional love for us. Could the resistance to it that some people have cause the divisions Jesus mentions in this Gospel? 3. Pope Francis gave this “lesson” on contemplative pray-er as he reflected on our Gospel Reading at Casa Santa Marta. We should all carry out this contemplative prayer. ‘But I have so much to do!’ At home, [take] 15 minutes, pick up the Gospel, a small passage, imag-ine what happened and talk with Jesus about it. So your gaze will be fixed on Jesus and not so much on a TV soap opera, for example. Your ears will be focused on the words of Jesus and not so much on your neighborhood gossip.”

Pope Francis: A lesson in contemplative prayer, February 4, 2015

If your eyes are on Jesus, what are they not on? What is the out-come of developing a habit of contemplation?
