Gospel Reflections 3 May – 4th Sunday of Eastertide

‘The sheep follow him because they know his voice.’

When an ewe gives birth to her lamb farmers will not release the mother and baby onto the farm until they are sure

that the lamb knows the voice of the mother and will run to her when she calls. It is essential to the life of the lambs

that they know who their mother is. Today, is often known as Good Shepherd Sunday a day which the Church

designates as a special day of prayer for vocations. In the past this was always about encouraging people to consider

priesthood or religious life. Now, however, it is recognised that there are many vocations to which God can call us. We

are encouraged to discern what this might be, to listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd and to follow where he

wishes to lead us. It may be a vocation within the Church but ultimately our own personal vocation is wherever we

find ourselves at one with what God wants for us. Jesus has shown us the kind of Good Shepherd that he is – one who

cares for the weak, the dispossessed, the sinner, the abandoned – and whatever the walk of life we choose we are called

to be like him, little shepherds, reaching out to those who need our care and our tenderness.

The following prayer for a Spiritual Communion can be said: My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this Holy Sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.

Priests will say a private daily mass. Baptisms, confirmations will no longer be celebrated until such time when public health advice is that congregations can gather safely. May – the Month of Mary. In these days of Eastertide we remember that on Calvary, Our Lord gave us His Mother to be Our Mother. St. John made a place for her in his home. As Pope Francis reminds us (see above) Mary participated in Jesus pain, with steadfast faith. She passed through the mystery of the Cross to the Glory of the Resurrection. Our Heavenly Mother now assists us with her prayers so that we also may experience the grace of the Holy Spirit on our journey of faith. During this month let us make use of our rosary beads to reflect, with Mary’s humility and faith on what Christ has done for us. Our Lady of Sorrows is one who has compassion on those who suffer. She sees Christ in each of us, especially when we struggle. Further more, as our Mother she has the gift of nurturing life so let us turn to her so that we can grow. She brought up God’s Only Son! She will intercede for us. Let us pray for each other that we may be children of the Resurrection, sons and daughters in the Son of God. I hope you are keeping well during this time of isolation. Please be assured of my prayers. Fr. Paul

Pope Francis has composed a prayer to Our Lady, Health of the Sick, to implore her protection during the Covid19 coronavirus pandemic. O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
