Eastern Catholics and Orthodox Christians share a love for the Byzantine liturgy

because it is during the Eucharist that the Church is most true to its identity,

expresses its integrity, and discovers its vocation. Eastern Catholic and

Orthodox Christians celebrate essentially the identical liturgy, with only very

slight variations. It is a fairly complex ritual weaving together three separate

layers of prayers: a liturgy prayed in the sanctuary by priests, often hidden by a

curtain or screen; a liturgy sung by the assembly and led by a deacon in front of

a screen formed of painted icons; and a third layer of private prayer by the

priest, who prays in support of the deacon and the faithful. It is an eyes-wide-

open experience, gorgeous in visuals, and filled with the sound of God's people

singing prayer. The energy of the worship centers on the presence of Christ,

largely through an awareness of heaven touching earth when the Church

gathers to celebrate. In the late twentieth century, Latin Rite Catholics were

encouraged to embrace a style of worship that was "full, conscious, and active,"

a value that has never been lost in the East. The liturgy has great impact in its

beauty, in its poetry and contemplation, and by the actions of bowing, signing

yourself with the sign of the cross, and chanting that are required of the

assembly. Contact with the Eastern Church reveals some key values that have

been obscured in our own Church and are slowly being recovered.

PUTTING THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE

(PONIENDO LAS COSAS EN PERSPECTIVA)

September 11: Walk Through Church: Discovery and Meaning

September 18: The History and Changes of the Mass

September 25: Praying the Mass: Why We Do What We Do

The cost of being a disciple of Jesus is demanding. Aren't there

times and situations when we would just like God to give us a clear

signal about what we are doing, if we're on the right path, or what

would be the best decisions to make?!! Sometimes we might ask

ourselves if the daily work we are doing is truly pleasing to God and

helping make the world a better place. At times we might be

wondering if we are using our God-given talents and abilities to the

best possible use. And sometimes we just want things to stay as

they are in a comfortable routine that seems to help our lives run

along smoothly and not require too much effort or change from us.

That may be the challenge................................................................................

Sometimes God intervenes through human and circumstantial means

- like when losing a job or being cut back on hours give us an

opportunity to re-examine how we prioritize our time and energy.

Or when new responsibilities at home or work or a promotion make

us stretch ourselves and discover our abilities to do things or be

something we hadn't thought of before, or develop skills we didn't

quite realize we had. That may be grace - even in disguise..................

Even when things are going along smoothly, there is the challenge

we have been given through our call to discipleship: to live in such

a way that our very lives are a sort of "Gospel" we are writing each

day - who God is for us, what the Gospel message means to us, and

how we understand the Good News of God's love and mercy in our

lives. This is our Baptismal call - when God welcomed us into the

Family of Faith, and gave us both the grace and the community of

believers to help us along the way..................................................................

One way to deepen your experience of the Faith Community would

be to join in the Adult Initiation process as a faith sharer, a parishioner

who would like to know more and grow in faith and share the faith

journey with others in a small community. Join us on Wednesday

evenings -- see the topics given below - and share your faith!............

mejor.
