LITURGY CORNER

SAINT JOHN FISHER (1469-1535) AND SAINT THOMAS MORE (1477-1535) June 22 From Robert Bolt’s classic A Man for All Seasons to Showtime’s edgy The Tudors, Thomas More endears himself still: lawyer-statesman of impeccable integrity, remarried widower and affectionate father delighting in a lively household—four children, a pet monkey, even a paid jester! And challenges still: humanist-reformer, yet champion of Catholic faith and papal primacy. John Paul II named him Patron of Statesmen and Politicians, citing More’s generous work, both as a lawyer and in government service, on behalf of the poorest and most marginalized people of his time, as well as his promotion of education for all sectors of society. More’s decision for principle over politics, conscience over convenience prompted his final words: “I die the king’s good servant, but God’s first.” Alone among England’s bishops, John Fisher dared challenge Henry VIII’s divorce and repudiation of the papacy. When the Pope named the imprisoned Fisher a cardinal, Henry thundered: “Don’t bother sending Fisher’s red hat here; I’ll send Fisher’s head to Rome!” Whose “good servants” are we first? Isn’t a right conscience worth the pain of standing alone?

ENTHUSIASM AND GRAMMAR There is a good reason that the writings of St. Paul don’t show up as examples in grammar textbooks. Today’s reading is a case in point. It begins with one of those long Pauline run on sentences that leave lectors gasping for breath. So what? Take a closer look at how Paul’s fervor for his subject matter derails the grammar. There is something admirable about being so caught up in his convictions that the words cannot come fast enough to express them, much less in an orderly fashion. Scripture scholars usually take this grammatical ineptness as a sign of a passage’s early importance in the Christian community, something they were so ardent about that their language never got refined. What leaves us in this condition? Re-telling the plot line of an action movie or the play-by-play of a sporting event? When was the last time any of us was so excited by our faith in Christ that we were left grasping for words, stumbling over our own errors in speech? It may be bad grammar, but it is an excellent way to inspire others with the message of Christ!

St. Cyril of Alexandria was the Patriarch of Alexandria from 412 to 444. He was enthroned when the city was at the height of its influence and power within the Roman Empire. Cyril wrote extensively and was a leading protagonist in the Christological controversies of the late-4th and 5th centuries. He was a central figure in the Council of Ephesus in 431, which led to the deposition of Nestorius as Patriarch of Constantinople.

The Nativity of John the Baptist is a Christian feast day celebrating the birth of John the Baptist. The Nativity of John the Baptist is a high-ranking liturgical feast, kept in the Roman Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran churches. The sole biblical account of the birth of John the Baptist comes from the Gospel of Luke.

St. Paulinus of Nola, born Pontius Meropius Anicius Paulinus, was a Roman poet, writer, and senator who attained the ranks of suffect consul and governor of Campania but—following the assassination of the emperor Gratian and under the influence of his Spanish wife Therasia of Nola — abandoned his career, was baptized as a Christian, and probably after Therasia's death became bishop of Nola in Campania. While there, he wrote poems in honor of his predecessor St Felix and corresponded with other Christian leaders throughout the empire. He is traditionally credited with the introduction of bells to Christian worship and helped resolve the disputed election of Pope Boniface I.

Fathers' Day is a day of honoring fatherhood and pa-ternal bonds, as well as the influence of fathers in so-ciety. In Catholic countries of Europe, it has been cel-ebrated on March 19 as Saint Joseph's Day since the Middle Ages. In America, Father's Day was founded by Sonora Smart Dodd, and celebrated on the third Sunday of June for the first time in 1910,

FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE Reopening our church for public worship must include every precaution to eliminate a second wave of infection; consequently, the Archdiocese has established the following guidelines to protect you as well as our fellow parishioners. Safest Practices for Attending Mass Those feeling unwell or believe they may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 should not attend Mass. One should not attend Mass if he or she is experiencing any symptoms of illness, especially the following: • A temperature above 100.4 F • Cough or sore throat • Shortness of breath • Recent loss of smell or taste

Chills, muscle aches, or gastrointestinal upset

If attending Mass, one must adhere to the following: All parishioners must wear a mask. Maintain six feet of social distance from others who are not from the same household at all times while in

the church or on church property. Refrain from physical contact such as holding hands during the Our Father. Choirs and singing will be held to a minimum.

Safest Practices for Receiving Communion Newly available evidence shows that virus spreads quickly through oral secretions; therefore, communion is most safely received as follows:

Communion will be received in the hand. Both the priest and the communicant will be wearing masks.

The priest and communicant will sanitize hands prior to distributing/receiving communion. Communion lines will be avoided – wait for the usher to dismiss each row individually and communion will be distributed as you exit the Church.
