OUR LADY OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT May 20 2018

My brothers and sisters in faith,

This weekend, following the 12:00 Mass, we will be honoring Sr. Rie Crowley for her years of

service to OLBS. For more than 3 decades, she has ministered to teens, seniors, the homebound, the

needy, and those who grieve the loss of a loved one. Her ministry has been varied, and yet, it has

always been in service to our parishioners and those beyond our parish. We pray that the Lord will

continue to bless her as she moves into retirement and that she may enjoy time now with her sisters

at the villa of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Philadelphia.

As we celebrate the feast of Pentecost, we will again see at the time of the homily a wonderful

overview of all the various ways in which we live out our faith through the inspiration of the Holy

Spirit. Thanks go especially to Fr. Tony, not only for taking pictures during the year of the various

ministries and activities of our parish, but for spending countless hours preparing the video

presentation that we will see today.

This video presentation is two-fold: 1) it is a way to say Thank you! to all those who have

given of their time and talent to participate in the ministries and activities of the parish which are the

ways in which we serve God’s people and gather as a community of faith, and 2) it is an invitation to

our parishioners to consider one of the many ways in which time and talent can still be given in

service to the parish and beyond.

In the second reading today, St. Paul speaks eloquently about the ways in which the Spirit has

empowered the disciples of the Lord with gifts to be placed at the service of the people of God.

Those gifts are different and many, but they all have one thing in common – they are given, not to

inflate the egos of the receivers of these gifts, but to allow believers to see the many needs of the

world and the many ways in which those needs can be met through the goodness and the gifts of the

givers.

Each weekend in the bulletin, a particular parish ministry/activity is highlighted and a

description given about that ministry/activity. This is done for two reasons: 1) to let our parish know

of the variety of ways in which we can serve God and the parish, and 2) to encourage parishioners to

reflect on the fact that they are being called by the Lord to participate in one of the ministries/

activities which are the lifeblood of our parish.

Not every person can participate in every ministry. For instance, if you can’t sing, the choir is

not for you but if you feel comfortable in front of people, your talent may be used as a catechist in

our Religious Education program or as a reader at Mass. The gifts are varied because the needs are

different. It makes no difference in what ministry/activity a person chooses to participate. The

important thing is that they trust the Lord enough that they are willing to say Yes! to his invitation

because they know 1) that he would never ask a person to do what they cannot do, and 2) that he

promises to walk with them in the ministry/activity that they are encouraged to join.

We celebrate a great feast today. It is a day when the early Church was given the courage and

the inspiration to open locked doors and to go out and to proclaim Christ, crucified and risen from

the dead. In different ways, we are called today to do the exact same thing – to proclaim by our lives

that the Lord Jesus is alive and active in our lives, in the life of our parish, and in the life of our

Church.

Love and Peace,

Fr. Bob

Venutolo (LaRiccia), US Marine Corps; Matt Tolliver, US

Coast Guard; Lt. John Werner, US Army; Capt. Bill Morgan;

all those involved in conflicts throughout the world and their families.

If you wish to bring forward the Offertory Gifts of Bread and Wine at Sunday Mass, please come to Church 15 minutes early and notify one of the priests.

This week the Sanctuary Candle and the Bread and Wine are offered for Karol Jakubowski.

Do You Need Prayers? We have a Prayer Chain here at OLBS. What is a Prayer Chain? It’s a group

of parishioners who have committed themselves to pray for people in our parish

or their families who have a special need for prayer, e.g., out of work and need a job, a serious illness, surgery, etc. What do you need to do? It’s very simple.

Call the rectory and tell us the first name ONLY of the person who needs prayer

and, if you wish, what the reason is for the prayer. (That last part is not

required.) We are waiting to pray for all those who need our prayers; so, call the

rectory and let us know what your prayer need is (973-226-7288).

REQUEST FOR PAPAL BLESSINGS

If you have a special event coming up in your own life or in the life of your family, e.g., wedding, 25th wedding anniversary, special birthday, you may want to request a Papal Blessing to mark the occasion. The blessings can come from either the Vatican itself

or the Vatican Embassy in Washington, D.C. Please note the following guidelines: 1) The individuals named in the blessing must be practicing Catholics. 2) Only one blessing can be obtained per person. 3) If requested from the Vatican, the blessing should be requested 4 months in advance of the occasion. The cost is $45.00. 4) If requested from the Vatican Embassy in Washington, D.C., the blessing should be requested 2 months in advance. The cost is $20.00.

Morning Prayer – 8:15 AM

We gather every Monday-Friday morning at 8:15 AM in the church to pray Morning Prayer. This public prayer of the church is a wonderful way to unite our prayers with those of the thousands of other Catholics in parishes, convents, and monasteries who pray Morning Prayer. This prayer is new for so many Catholics; yet we hope that more and more of our

parishioners will join us, especially if you cannot be with us for Mass at 8:45 AM.

Sanctuary Memorials

Parishioners can offer a donation of $15 for the Sanctuary Candle – the candle near the tabernacle - to burn in memory of a loved one, in honor of a special event, such as a 50th wedding anniversary or simply in the name of a family in the parish. You can also memorialize the bread and wine for a week in the same way as the Sanctuary Candle. The donation for the bread and wine for one week is $25.00. Please come to the rectory office and speak to Patty or one of our volunteers for more information. These remembrances will be listed in the bulletin, directly below the list of those remembered at parish Masses.

Food Certificates

As you already know, food certificates to local supermarkets are on sale before and after Mass on Saturday evening and Sunday morning/afternoon. The proceeds from this sale - $5.00 for every $100.00 worth of certificates purchased – goes to help us feed the hungry. We remember that the Lord said, “When I was hungry, you

gave me to eat; when I was thirsty, you gave me to drink.” Through the purchase of food certificates, you can help the parish serve the needs of the hungry. When you come to

Mass and purchase food certificates, you can help us to

help others in need.

MONTHLY FOOD DRIVE REMEMBER food can be dropped off any time and left in the vestibule closet, which is located in the back of the church. Thank you for all of your continued support!

From Needleworks Ministry:

We would like to remind everyone that if they know of anyone in need of a prayer shawl or lap blanket to please contact us. We do not need anyone’s name, no questions asked. We just want to provide some

comfort for those in need. You can call the Rectory @973-226-7288 to make a request or you can go to one of the weekly meetings and inquire in person.

Bible study session – June 4

Our next Bible study session will take place on

Monday evening, June, in Founder’s Hall, from 7:30-

8:45 PM. We will continue our look at the Gospel of

St. Mark, the first Gospel to be written. If you come,

please bring a copy of a bible.

Parish Giving is a safe, secure and easy

way to make online church donations.

There are enrollment forms in the vestibule, or you can simply enroll on line directly from our website. If you have any questions regarding online giving, please

contact Patty Braga at the Rectory, and she will be happy to assist you.

Blood Drive – June 30 Our parish will sponsor a blood drive on Saturday, June 30, 2018, from 9:30 AM – 1:30 PM, in Founder’s Hall.

Community Blood Services from Mont-vale, NJ, will be running the drive. More information will be in the bulletin as we draw closer to the blood drive. Memorial Day Cemetery Masses

Every Memorial Day, Cardinal Tobin and other priests if the Archdiocese of Newark celebrate Masses in the various cemeteries that are sponsored by the archdiocese, all taking place at 11:00 AM. This coming Memorial Day, May 28, the following bishops/priests will be celebrating Masses in the cemeteries listed: Cardinal Joseph Tobin – Holy Cross, North Arlington; Msgr. Robert Emery – Gate of Heaven, East Hanover; Msgr. Thomas Nydegger – Maryrest, Mahwah; Bishop Cruz – St. Gertrude, Colonia; Msgr. Gregory Studerus – Holy Name, Jersey City; Bishop John Flesey – Christ the King, Franklin Lakes; Fr. Philip Waters – Holy Sepulchre – East Orange. If you have a loved one buried in one of these cemeteries, it would be a wonderful to remember them and those who died in our Armed Forces by attending.

Chicken Thighs Weekends We are again going to ask our parishioners to make a tray of chicken thighs for the food kitchen at St. John’s, Newark. We will be distributing the pans with the recipe on the weekend of June 9-10 and collecting the frozen cooked thighs the following weekend, June 16-17. This is a wonderful and simple way to fulfill the mandate of the Lord – When I was hungry, you gave me to eat.

Pastoral Council Nomination Forms

Your form nominating a person for consideration as a Pastoral Council member can be placed in the Sunday collection or in the receptacle in the vestibule marked Pastoral Council Nomination Forms. You can also drop them off at the parish office on Monday, May 21.

Food Pantry Drivers Needed

Want to volunteer but don’t have much time? This may be the perfect opportunity. OLBS is looking for parishioners who can spare 1-1/2 hours on a Sunday morning once a year to bring food from OLBS to our sister parish, Blessed Sacrament in Newark. The Church is located on Van Ness Street. Each month, 2 volunteers from our parish pick up the bags of food from the ushers’ closet around 11:45 am, load their cars, and bring the food to Newark. It’s that simple. We ask for a commitment of 1 time a year. However, like many volunteers, you can offer to do more than one drop-ff. If you want to help, please contact Angela Segal at 973-464-6528 or email her at [email protected].

Toddlers ……All Are Welcome!! Come join us for coffee, support,

conversation and fun.

Helping Children Grow in Faith

The most important thing we can teach our children is that God loves them. We believe that we were each created in God’s image and likeness and that we were created by a loving God for the purpose of love (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #355).

At Shipwrecked, Rescued by Jesus: Totally Catholic VBS, children don’t just hear about God’s love, they live it! They see it, touch it, sing it, taste it, and put it into action through God Sightings, Connecting children to Justice and lots, lots more. As children move from station to station, they move deeper into their understanding and relationship with God.

Children ages 5 -10 are cordially invited to join their ship-wrecked

buddies at Vacation Bible School during the week of June 25th. We

will meet each day from 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM. Registration forms

can be found online at olbs.org or in the vestibule of the church.

Guac, the Iguana is waiting for you!

Religious Education Registration will take place for new families in the school office from Monday through Thursday, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Please bring a copy of your child’s baptism certificate if they were baptized at a parish other than Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament. To obtain a registration form, please visit our website at olbs.org. The forms can be downloaded directly from the site for your convenience.

Grab your friends or family & build a sandcastle out of recycled

items, craft supplies, or junkyard finds! Be creative! Use your

imagination!

We need all sizes and shapes of large free standing & tabletop

displays to decorate our church for VBS!

Prizes will be given for the most creative, largest, and silliest

sandcastles.

Kindly pre-register your creation by sending an email to

[email protected] by June 17. Simply leave your name and email

address.

Bring sandcastles on June 24 at 1:15 PM to the vestibule of the

church. Judging will follow immediately.

Would you sponsor a child for our Religious

Education Program? Would like to make a difference in a child’s life at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament? If so, would you consider sponsoring one child in the Religious

Education Program? On occasion, the religious education fee is a financial burden for a family due to the loss of a job or serious illness. With your help, we could say to a family in need, “A generous parishioner has paved the way.” Please help us to help another by a one-time donation of $110.00, the fee for the 2018-2019 year. Your reward will be great in heaven.

AMERICAN FLAGS WELCOMED

We thank the families who donated flags of loved ones who served in

our Armed Forces. When we fly a new flag, we will acknowledge in whose memory it has been given to OLBS. If you have a flag and wish to donate it, please bring it to the rectory office and we will gladly receive it and fly it.

IS YOUR MARRIAGE VALID?

If you were married civilly, that is not in the Catholic

Church before a priest or deacon, it might not be a valid

marriage. Some couples believe that a marriage before

a Justice of the Peace or a non-Catholic minister is valid.

For a marriage to be valid in the Catholic Church, the

marriage must be in a Catholic Church or Chapel and

officiated by an authorized Catholic priest or deacon

along with 2 witnesses. (There are limited interfaith

exceptions with proper permission.)

We invite you to speak with one of our priests if there

are any questions or if, indeed, you wish to validate your

marriage. The process can be very simple and your

marriage will now be blessed by the Church.

Our Stewardship Pledge

Please say this pledge each day, asking the Lord’s

guidance for our parish.

OLBS parish is composed of people like me.

I help make it what it is.

It will be holy, if I am.

It will be friendly, if I am.

Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them.

It will do great work, if I work.

It will be prayerful, if I pray.

It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a

generous giver.

It will bring others into worship, if I invite and bring

them.

It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness

and faith, of compassion, charity, and mercy, if I, who

it what it is, am filled with these same virtues.

Therefore, with the help of Christ our King, I now

dedicate myself to the task of being all that I want my

parish to be.

Our Parish Calendar

Our parish calendar is now on line and can be

accessed by any parishioner with a computer or a

smart phone. By following the steps given below,

you can see the various activities happening in the

parish, whether they are weekly events, such as

Religious Education classes, or a one-time event.

These are the steps that you need to follow:

1) type in olbs.org;

2) once you are on our website, click on

“parish calendar” found on he left-hand side:

3) click on any item and it will show what it

is, where it is and when it is.

Check each day or each week to know all that is

happening at our parish!!!

Hospital Privacy

Please remember that current privacy laws regarding patients in hospitals do not allow the hospitals/pastoral care offices to contact

parishes if their parishioners are in the hospital. If you or a loved

one are going into the hospital and want a priest to visit you or

that loved one, please call the rectory office or Sr. Rie (973-403-

8169).

Fire Lanes

Please remember – if you are parking on Sunday morning in an area not

a regular space, that is a No Parking Fire Zone. Parking there could

potentially prevent firefighting equipment from getting through if there

were a fire in the church or other parish building. Please respect the

safety of others and park only in designated spaces.

Silence after the readings

We have asked those in our music ministry to ensure that there is a

significant time of silent reflection after each of the first two readings at

Mass on Saturday evening/Sunday mornings. This time of silence allows

those who have just heard the Scripture readings to have the opportunity

to reflect on what was just proclaimed. IT IS NOT A TIME TO BE

INVOLVED IN OTHER ACTIVITIES. Without silence, we cannot

effectively hear the voice of God, speaking to us in the quiet time. Use

this time of silent reflection well so that the Lord may continue to speak

to us in our hearts and minds.

How To Report Abuse The Archdiocese of Newark takes very

seriously any and all credible complaints of

sexual misconduct by members of the clergy,

religious and lay staff of the archdiocese. We

encourage anyone with knowledge of an act

of sexual misconduct to inform the

archdiocese immediately so that we may take

appropriate action to protect others and

provide support to victims of sexual abuse.

Individuals who wish to report an allegation

of sexual misconduct may do so by calling

the Archdiocesan Office of Child and Youth

Protection at 201-407-3256.
