In less than one month we will begin the holy season of Lent, our forty days of prepara on for the most important feast in the Chris an year: Easter. On this Fi h Sunday in Ordinary Time the readings for the Liturgy of the Word give some indica on of the kind of prepara on for Lent and Easter that will provide the most frui ul experience of both.

In our reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah we are encouraged to remember that our concern for the least among us, for the poor and the needy, is a responsibility we all share. Isaiah puts care for the poor and needy as central to the life of faith: “Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own” (58:7). The prophet places these words within the context of an announcement of salva on from the LORD; our salva on is united to our care for those who might not be no ced. Those who are in need of our compassion, according to Isaiah, cannot be invisible to us. The message of the prophet is that a vital faith must be connected to concrete ac ons that manifest our confidence in the living God that always involves the concerns and cares of others as well as our own. Salva on is not just a ma er of our personal rela onship with God, although it is not incidental, but involves our a en on to the cares and needs of others. When we know that our salva on involves giving a en on to those who need us then, in the words of Isaiah, our “light shall break forth like the dawn” (58:10). Our desire to live in humble service to others is a sign of our humility in our rela onship to God.

In our second reading from the First Le er of Saint Paul to the Corinthians, the apostle speaks about the challenges of his own ministry and his human frailty: “I did not come with sublimity of words or of wisdom. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified” (1 Cor. 2:1-2). Paul a aches himself to Christ crucified, to the kind of Savior that neither the people of Israel or the Gen les were expec ng. Paul challenges disciples not to be pulled in by human wisdom that might be elegant or a rac ve on a superficial level.

Paul is never faint of heart in preaching that the believer must live in very, very close proximity to the crucified Savior. That is very difficult to do. To live with the wounds of Christ ourselves means that we are not overwhelmed by our own human weaknesses; by openness to the power of the Holy Spirit, our weaknesses are always turned to grace. When we are aware that we must live with total dependence upon the power of God’s mercy then we never forget that a certain acceptance of human weakness means that we are pa ent with the failings of others as well as our own. We all need our Savior, Jesus Christ, he poured out his blood for our salva on on the cross. If we are faithful to him we, too, must be reconcilers and agents of God’s mercy for others.

Knowing our need for God’s mercy there is no be er way to experience God’s healing love than through the Sacrament of Reconcilia on where we put the past behind us through God’s grace and look toward a future as disciples of the Lord freed from those failures that have burdened us. As we look forward to Lent it is good for us to think about using that season of grace to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconcilia on with confession. The Lord is always wai ng for us; there is no such thing as having been away from confession too long to ever go back. Celebra ng the Sacrament of Reconcilia on helps us to appreciate our need for God’s mercy and the importance of having healthy rela onships with the people in our lives, and to wish to make the wisdom of God our own. As Saint Paul puts it: our faith must rely upon the power of God’s mercy as well as the wisdom of God more than anything else, our own failures should not deter us by living in hope; Paul himself preached the gospel with sure knowledge of his own weakness but he was confident that his ministry was being used for God’s purposes because he was not relying upon his own power: “. . . with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstra on of Spirit and power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God” (1 Cor. 2:4-5). God never stands apart from us but fills our hearts with the power of his wisdom so that we rely upon more than human arguments but on the certainty of his mercy and love at work in our lives.

Our gospel reading from Saint Ma hew provides the first disciples and us with a challenge: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot” (5:13). Wri ng at a me when the Church was being persecuted, Ma hew assures the early Church that the Lord will not abandon them in the midst of their suffering. Despite adversity, the disciples and we have definite work to do from the Lord and a mission. We cannot lose enthusiasm for our mission when we feel a sort of lack of resolve that can overtake us in the darkness of winter. Jesus encourages us not to forget our mission: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house” (5:14-15). By our a en on to those in need of our compassion and assistance, and reliance upon God’s mercy and our striving to remain close to the crucified Savior, following his example of self-giving –other-centered love, we are faithful to the charge that the Lord Jesus gives us: “. . . your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father” (5:16). As we celebrate these remaining Sundays in Ordinary Time and look forward to the beginning of Lent, we pray for the grace to be open to the power of God’s mercy, wisdom, and love.

In a recent visit to Saints Elizabeth and Zachariah in Rome, the Holy Father, Pope Francis, noted that the bread that we

receive in Holy Communion, in the Eucharist, is not ordinary bread but the Body of Christ. The Holy Father encourages us to remember that the Body of Christ strengthens us to do the work of Christ in the world. We do not receive simple bread when we receive Holy Communion; we receive the Bread of Life, the Body and Blood of Christ. The Holy Father notes:

And Jesus also gives us the strength to work. Doesn’t he? He sustains us! Good! In difficulty, doesn’t he? And also in our school tasks! He supports us, he helps us, he leads us, he sustains us. That’s it! Jesus always goes with us. Good. But listen, Jesus gives us strength. How does Jesus give us strength? You know this, you know that he gives us strength! Louder, I can’t hear you! In Communion he gives us strength, he really helps us with strength. He comes to us. But when you say, “he gives us Communion,” does a piece of bread make you so strong? Isn’t it bread? Is it bread? This is bread, but is what is on the altar bread? Or isn’t it bread? It seems to be bread. It is not really bread. What is it? It is the Body of Jesus. Jesus comes into our heart.

The Eucharist is the center of our lives as Catholics. Without the Eucharist there is no Church. The Eucharist is the living promise of Christ’s enduring presence with us.

Just a reminder that we need to be especially reverent when we receive Holy Communion; reverence is found in the heart but our outward approach to the Eucharist and the manner in which we receive the Eucharist is important. We show a sign of reverence with a gentle bow before receiving Holy Communion and we place our le hand over the right and immediately receive the Body of Christ when it is distributed to us. No one should ever walk away carrying the host. Please remember to receive the host at once. Reverence for the Eucharist is an essen al of our faith. If you wish to receive the host on the tongue you may also do so. Immediately a er receiving the host you may receive from the chalice for the distribu on of the Precious Blood. Please do not try to dip the host into the chalice to receive through “in nc on;” reverence for the Precious Blood is important and, addi onally, one does not self-administer Holy Communion, the Eucharist is always received from another. In receiving either the Body of Christ or the Precious Blood of Christ, the Body and Blood are both received; in receiving the Eucharist under one form we receive under both. Both the Body and Blood of Christ are distributed so that the fullness of the Eucharis c meal is expressed. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church notes:

Since Christ is sacramentally present under each of the species, communion under the species of bread alone makes it possible to receive all the fruit of Eucharis c grace. For pastoral reasons this manner of receiving communion has been legi mately established as the most common form in the La n rite. But ‘the sign of communion is more complete when given under both kinds, since in that form the sign of the Eucharis c meal appears more clearly. ’This is the usual form of receiving communion in the Eastern rites (CCC, 1390).

We all appreciate what a gi the Eucharist is to us, we receive the Body and Blood of Christ, in the Eucharist and our reverence for that gi should be clear. The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us of the immense mystery that we become a part of in the celebra on of the Eucharist and the recep on of Holy Communion: “By the consecra on the transubstan a on of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ is brought about. Under the consecrated species of bread and wine Christ himself, living and glorious, is present in a true, real, and substan al manner: his Body and his Blood, with his soul and his divinity” (CCC, 1413). As we approach the Lord in Holy Communion we make the effort to express the worship and reverence that is due to him.

This Saturday and Sunday, February 4th-5th, the Blessing of Throats will take place in honor of the Feast of Saint Blaise which was celebrated February 3rd.

Many Catholics never completed the process of their full ini a on into the Church by receiving the Sacrament of Confirma on. If you are an adult bap zed Catholic and have not been confirmed but would like to be, please contact me at the parish office or via e-mail and we can talk about the program that will begin in the fall that will lead to receiving the gi s of the Holy Spirit in Confirma on at Easter. If you are an adult Catholic who has never been confirmed please consider taking part in this opportunity. As we begin to prepare for Lent we are in the process of beginning our final prepara ons for our adult Confirma on prepara on. Please contact the office if you are an adult Catholic who has never been confirmed and who wishes to complete the Sacraments of Ini a on into the Catholic Church by receiving the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirma on. It is never too late to take the opportunity to receive the strengthening of the gi s of the Holy Spirit.

people park in our lot. Once again, it is important to note that we don’t have spaces to waste. When spaces are wasted because of a failure to pull all the way through the space then there are people who cannot find a place to park and those who have difficulty walking find it nearly impossible to make it to the elevator so that they can access the church. It just takes a few extra minutes to be though ul. Please take the me to be mindful of others.

2016 B ’ A A B R G W (1 T 6:18)

Many parishioners have received, or will soon receive, a le er from Bishop Serratelli reques ng support of the 2016 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. This year, the theme of the Appeal is Be Rich in Good Works. The Bishop’s Annual Appeal supports four very worthy causes: our Catholic Chari es agencies; Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests’ re rement residence; our inner-city elementary schools; and seminarian educa on. Last year’s Appeal raised a record amount which meant that even more could be done for people in our local Church of Paterson. You can make this year’s Appeal an even greater success by making a generous pledge today. Whatever you can do to help will be a great blessing. Thank you for helping our parish to fulfill our responsibili es to the Diocese of Paterson.

T B ’ A A :

• O C C The largest percentage of Appeal funds support our diocesan Catholic Chari es with dona ons to these programs and services:

• S S With the help of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal last year, much was done to support Catholic schools in the inner-city area, including capital improvements such as roof replacement, HVAC upgrades, interior ligh ng and exterior doors. The Appeal also helped fund financial aid to assist families to afford Catholic school educa on, technology upgrades to enhance the academic programs offered in the schools and support of school ac vi es such as music, art and sports that give a well-rounded educa onal experience.

• S E D P ’ R R The Bishop’s Annual Appeal helps fund the educa on of our seminarians and Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests’ re rement residence in Chester. This is especially important since the number of seminarians has increased drama cally in recent years, along with the cost of their forma on. The Appeal helps both of these groups of men: those who are preparing for a life me of service to the Church and those who have faithfully served for decades.

• P R Half of the amount received over our parish goal will be returned to our parish for our own needs. Not only does the Appeal support many worthwhile ministries throughout the diocese, it will also help our own parish if we reach and exceed our goal.

96 cents of every dollar raised is applied to the Appeal needs as outlined above. The 4 cent balance for fundraising expenses is far below the guidelines recommended by the Be er Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance.

• Day care and extended day care for working poor families • Assisted transporta on for the elderly and medically frail • Individual and family counseling • Emergency food banks • Adult day care for economically disadvantaged seniors • Housing and case management for persons with HIV/AIDS • Case management for adults and children with HIV/AIDS • Group homes for adults with disabili es • Family Support and case management for families with

Faith Formation Corner Attention 2nd Grade Parents As weekly mass is an integral part of our lives as Catholics, it is important that our children attend weekly mass. This is especially important as they prepare for the Sacrament of First Eucharist and equally important after they receive their Sacrament. While our parish offers many masses during each weekend for us to attend, during the next several weeks, we require that all children who will soon receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist, attend the Sunday 9:30 AM mass together as a group. Attending mass together shall begin on Sunday, February 26, 2017 and continue through each of the remaining weekends of preparation. These dates that your children will be attending 9:30 mass together are as follows:

2/26, 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 3/26, 4/2, 4/23, 4/30 We require at least one parent or guardian to accompany and stay with the child during Mass. When you arrive, please sign the attendance form that will be located at the front and rear entrances of the church. After Mass please bring your child to their respective classroom for their weekly instruction. Thank you for your cooperation and support. We Are STILL in NEED of Catechists! Our ability to provide effective programming for so many of our children enrolled in our program is only made possible if we have enough volunteers to serve as catechists. Please carefully review the information in the registration letter with regard to our need for Catechists and return the Catechist Volunteer Form that was enclosed in the registration packet to the ministry center ASAP. If you would like more detailed information about becoming a catechist, please contact Trish at [email protected] or leave a message at the Parish Ministry Center 973-256-5200.
