Faith and Mission Marie Louise Hartzer In our College assembly on August 30, our Year 12 students led the College community in a beautiful prayer focused on the life of Marie Louise Hartzer. As a school community we reflected on her courage and tenacity in the face of so many obstacles.

Glen Eira Town Hall Performance

On Wednesday evening, 6 September, five students attended a Citizenship Ceremony held at the Glen Eira Town Hall. It is the first time that a school has been invited to perform as part of the ceremony. The students sang three pieces (‘I Still Call Australia Home’, ‘I Am Australian’ and the National Anthem) accompanied by the Glen Eira Brass band and Ms Megan Donohue on piano. Being among 150 new Australian citizens ranging from toddlers to grown adults was a wonderful experience and celebration. As one student said, “This really has been the highlight of my day.” Ms Megan Donohue Deputy Principal Faith and Mission

Curriculum News Science Week (12-20 August 2017) The students at OLSH College celebrated Science Week by participating in a variety of activities. The Year 8s, in line with the theme of “Future Earth”, made recycled paper and also used waste paper to create beautiful bowls and dishes.

Year 7 students were given the Marshmallow Challenge. The task to be completed in eighteen minutes, was to build the tallest free-standing structure out of 20 sticks of spaghetti, one yard of tape, one yard of string, and one marshmallow. The marshmallow needs to be on top.

Curriculum News Women in Science Breakfast Year 11 students, Liana Torcasio, Diana Vagas, Kathleen O’Leary, Lily Aldridge and Jade Jones, attended the Annual Women in Science Breakfast held at Mentone Girls Grammar on 17 August. The guest speaker was Dr Tania Obranovich who has a distinguished career as a Registered Patent Attorney and acts for several significant Australian biotech companies. She is also heavily involved in education in the IP profession at the University of Melbourne and is a member of the Professional Standards Board for Patent and Trade Marks Attorneys. The girls were thrilled to have the opportunity to participate. Diana Vagas wrote, “Hearing Dr Obranovich speak at the science breakfast really highlighted the many different careers in STEM. It was amazing to hear her speak about her extensive work in the science community, particularly regarding the patenting of genes. Dr Obranovich’s presentation was incredibly inspiring and reminded us about the many things that women in STEM can achieve and how we can accomplish anything we set our minds to.” Jade Jones also commented, “At the breakfast, we were allocated to tables and had a mixture of girls from other schools. On my table, we had a PHD student who was studying Leukemia and she was quite young. It was engaging and overall very interesting.” Katheen O’Leary stated, “I found it really inspiring how passionate Dr Tania Obranovich is about her job. I also liked how encouraging she was for girls to find jobs in science and realised how important science is for many aspects of our lives.”

Curriculum News Chinese Cultural Day 23 August On Wednesday 23 August the Year 9 and Year 11 Chinese Studies students attended the Chinese Cultural day at Melbourne Town Hall. Over 1800 students and 100 performers attended and participated. We participated in workshops where we could stamp our Chinese zodiac signs onto different cards and where we could experiment writing in Chinese using calligraphy brushes onto a type of paper where, over time, the writing disappears. There were two Chinese people who could write our Chinese names professionally onto red paper which symbolises luck. There were also many other fun games where we could win prizes. Later we took our seats to listen to speeches by several distinguished guests, some of whom spoke in Chinese. We had the opportunity to experience authentic Chinese dragon dancing and other traditional dances and Chinese singing. There were quizzes about Chinese culture and language and we could win prizes including round-trip tickets to China. At the events completion the students from both year levels and our teachers lunched at a Chinese restaurant. We were offered buffet style food including dishes like dumplings, fried rice, noodles, fried fish, honey chicken and many more. On behalf of all the girls who attended we would like to thank Ms Chen and Ms Graffeo for organising and taking us on this day and making it an enjoyable experience. Overall it was a really engaging day and inspired us to continue learning Chinese. Brylee Nicholson Year 11

Wellbeing News Year 10 Camp: The Amazing Race Lake Dewar Year 10 camp was full of challenges right from the start. The first challenge was to embrace a ‘tech-free’ camp experience by leaving phones and any other technology at home or out of reach. For some, this was a huge challenge and not easy at all. We were able to nominate our cabin groups but our activity groups were randomly selected. During ‘free-time’ we were able to hang out with friends inside the conference centre or outside by the lake. But during the ‘activity’ time, which was 9-5pm on our full day, we were in full competitive mode. Activity groups were different from the cabin groups and so we got to know and work with some girls who were not normally in our regular friendship group…. this was good! We participated in the ‘Amazing Race’ which meant our group tried to complete all twenty one challenges in the fastest time possible. At the end of the three days the scores and times were tallied with ‘Pink Yeah’ the very vocal victors! At night time after dinner the Year 10 student leaders ran a Trivia Competition, Talent Quest and Disco. We also had a campfire and toasted marshmallows. We were told the camp food would be delicious and we weren’t disappointed! Thank you to all of the staff who came on camp, the student leaders who organised the night-time activities and the Year 10 girls who energetically joined in to make this camp experience possible. Georgina Austen Year 10 The Year 10 camp at Lake Dewar was so much fun. The whole camp was set up as an amazing race which meant everyone really got involved and into the spirit, making the atmosphere at camp so enjoyable. In the race there were heaps of activities that challenged our survival skills and capability in outdoor activities. Some of my favourite tasks included geocaching, tunnelling, fishing, canoeing blindfolded (with an instructor to direct us) and mountain biking. These activities in particular helped us to build co-operation and teamwork skills, the ability to communicate with others and grow stronger friendship bonds. During the entire time at camp, I not only thoroughly enjoyed myself but also got to test myself in outdoor challenges that I had never done before such as a building a fire and kick boxing. I also confronted a fear - the flying fox. Before I had even been strapped into the fox I was so afraid to go on it. But with the comfort and support from not only my fellow group members but also Mr Saheed and my group’s camp leader, Mindee, I was able to let go of my fears and enjoy the thrill of the fox and the amazing views from far down the valley. I felt so accomplished afterwards and when I arrived back at the other end I was greeted by lots of hugs and congratulations from my friends. I think that Year 10 camp was so enjoyable and exciting; from spending quality time with friends, learning and using new skills and participating in all the amazing activities, not to mention that my group won the amazing race. I thoroughly loved the activities, the staff and just the overall trip altogether. Honour Marshall Year 10

Sport News 2017 Ski Trip 1 September A group of Year 11 and the VET Sport and Recreation students travelled to Mt Hotham to celebrate our very cold winter in the snow. We stayed at the Bright Chalet and drove up the mountain each morning to have lessons and then build on our skills in the afternoon with the teachers from OLSH College. Many girls were excited to see snow for the first time and were lucky to experience the best snow that Victoria has had for many years. Everyone had funny stories to tell on the way home each day and felt some sore muscles after their time on the slopes.

Performing Arts News OLSH College & De La Salle College Present… The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde

We are very excited to showcase the inaugural Senior Drama with De La Salle College Malvern. A very talented cast is enjoying the brilliance of Oscar Wilde as they rehearse this wonderful comedy of manners. The Irishman Oscar Wilde claimed to write ‘trivial comedies for serious people’, but he did more than that. His wit mixed impudence, farce, and logic and he laughed at the English in a way that has probably only been bettered by his fellow Irishman, George Bernard Shaw. Although Wilde’s play The Importance of Being Earnest was first produced on St Valentine’s Day, 1895 to this day still incites the same bite as we can see clearly that Wilde was laughing at the very people who went to see his plays, although it is doubtful that his audiences were aware of this. The play will be performed on 14 and 15 September 7.30pm in the OLSH College Hall. Tickets can be purchased commencing 14 August via the website. https://www.trybooking.com/RNDR
