2 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 26, 2021
Our Lady of the Wayside is looking for a Chairperson to lead our Wheels to Worship Ministry.
What is Wheels to Worship?
The Wheels to Worship Ministry is a group of volunteers who practice discipleship by driving our parish’s older adults to Mass on Sunday — making it possible for them to participate and to receive the Holy Eucharist.
The Wheels to Worship Chairperson is responsible for co-ordinating this process — lining up those needing rides with those who have wheels, an open seat, and the will to be a diff erence-maker.
If you are interested in being Chairperson of OLW’s Wheels to Worship Ministry, or would like additional in-formation, please contact Kathy O’Neill, Coordinator of Pastoral Healthcare, at (224) 518-1780 or [email protected].

REFLECTION26th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B
Father Arthur Marat
This upcoming week, on Oc-tober 1, we will celebrate the feast of St. Therese of Lisieux. I would like to share with you a few reflections about my favorite saint. St. Therese of Lisieux once said “To be like a child means not worry about anything.”
In this one sentence is her whole philosophy of life—her whole path to sanctity. Entrust yourself to God. Do not worry about anything because God loves you. He will take care of everything that you need. When you discover this, your heart will overflow with au-thentic peace.
Once, when St. Therese was in the novitiate in Li-sieux, her mother superior told her: “Therese, this afternoon please clean under the stairs.” When St. Therese went with her broom to clean, she discov-ered a few huge spiders waiting for her. St. Therese had a strong fear of spiders. She wrote in the story of her life that, when she was confronted with this fear, she prayed and gave Jesus everything, including her fear of spiders. Then she forced herself to clean out the spiders’ webs from under the stairs. What was important in this situation? St. Therese felt fear, and immediately she gave this fear to Jesus. And she did what she had to do . . . with Jesus.
Every person has different fears in their hearts. But Therese reminds us that, rather than letting these fears be a weakness in our lives, we can turn then into gifts by offering them to Jesus and letting him take care of the rest.
Yours in Christ,Father Arthur
St. Thérèse of Lisieux (2 January 1873 – 30 September 1897)

Between 12,000 and 61,000 people die from infl uenza each year in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control (https://bit.ly/3koQQxu). Th is year, with the COVID-19 pandemic continuing as the fl u season looms, getting a fl u shot is more important now than ever.
“In China and in South America, it was discovered that you can get COVID-19 and infl uenza at the same time,” explains Dr. Donald Beno (https://bit.ly/3lA76Lu), pediatrician at Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay, WI. “We now know that with those two illnesses, the outcomes are much worse when you have both illnesses at the same time.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, if you contract the fl u and COVID-19 at the same time, you may also be contagious for a longer period of time, furthering the chance of spreading both to other individuals if precautions and prevention measures are not taken. Th e annual fl u shot is available now.
“Masking will certainly help to keep respiratory droplets from transmitting both COVID-19 and the fl u, as well as the common cold,” says Dr. Beno. “And as we all know, diligent handwashing will also help prevent the transmission of illnesses.”

We strive to make sure that no family is turned away because of financial need. The Gloria Rebek Scholarship Fund continues to be an important means of providing help for families finding themselves on hard times. Some families have a one-time need so they don’t have to take their children out of our school. Some families apply yearly for scholarship aid because providing a Catholic education for their children is important, but financially out of reach.
A scholarship fund is always in need of donations and a gift of any size makes an impact to this worthy fund. Will you consider donating to the Gloria Rebek Scholarship Fund? Donations made by check can be sent to the school or parish office - include REBEK in the memo line. Donations can also be made via EFT or credit card through GiveCentral or on the school website, olwschool.org, using the DONATE link at the top of the website.

Grief Support Group for Adults
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
Our Lady of the Wayside Ministry of Bereavement offers a grief support program for adults. This six‐week program is open to adult men & women parishioners who have suffered the loss of a spouse,
parent, adult child or sibling through death.
“Companions on the Journey” ‐ A Place and a Time to Heal
November 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 & December 6
10am to 12pm in the Our Lady of the Wayside Parish Center
Gatherings will be held in one of the larger rooms of the Parish Ministry Center to allow for distancing. All masking protocols that are in place in November will be followed.
Even with deep faith grief, work is hard. People say you should be “over it by now,” but you are not; you may feel lonely, angry, depressed, overwhelmed or confused; others have gone back to their daily routines, but your life will never be the same. The goal of this group is to help you understand your feelings are normal; guide you in learning about the grief process; and give you a safe place to share your thoughts, feelings and experiences in a faith setting.
To register please do one of the following:
Call Kathy O’Neill at 224‐518‐1780 or email at [email protected] or Fill out the form below and mail it to Kathy’s attention at OLW or drop the form in the weekly collection basket.

What are the little ones? They are the poor, the marginalized, the women and men at the well, the Zacchaeus’ looking for Jesus from a tree, those mired in sin, the blind who want to see, and the lame who want to walk. They are the lepers and the different ones who have been told that they are unclean, and the ones who suffer from abuse and grave injustices and oppression. They are children who want nothing more than to be loved and enjoy celebrating their innocence. These are all the little ones and they are all vulnerable. Life already brings them burdens, we don’t need to add to them.
St. Oscar Romero said, “When the church hears the cry of the oppressed it cannot but denounce the social structures that give rise to and perpetuate the misery from which the cry arises.” Why are so many people still so gravely hurting? We have the resources and the means to make things better. We choose not to. There are still those things called greed, pride, lust, apathy, jealously, gluttony, and anger that prevent us from seeing each other and people to be loved and not objects to be used. Is this how God intended things to be?
God loves what is good and upright. It doesn’t matter who did it or where it came from. In God’s eyes, the end result is always faith, hope, and love. Those will always unite a person with God. We fill our lives with many things that are not good either for ourselves or for others. All of us have to work to discover what it is, exactly, that leads to the world’s broken-ness. There are people, systems, and ideologies in place that foster oppression and injustice rather than equity and fair-ness. Sadly, our complacency can be the greatest evil. Turn-ing a blind eye, ignoring the truth, and believing that we are helpless to fix so great a problem, does little to move us closer to the kingdom of God. As members of the Body of Christ, we cannot condone anything that keeps people in misery.
As it is said, charity begins at home. Perhaps a good place to start is with our own households and making sure their foun-dations are properly laid.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 26, 2021
12 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 26, 2021
Sunday, Sep 26, 2021TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Well done, good and faithful servantsMother's and Father's Days aren't occasions for parents to toottheir own horns about how fabulously they fulfilled the tasks ofchild-rearing. These dates are for their children to recall andcelebrate the special people who made their lives possible.Similarly, today's Priesthood Sunday isn't meant for priests to beatthe drum about their vocation. It's an opportunity for the rest of us,who benefit from their fidelity, to thank the men who were presentto the first moments of our life in faith and will be there at the last—plus countless moments in between.
TODAY'S READINGS: Numbers 11:25-29; James 5:1-6; Mark 9:38-43,45, 47-48 (137). "Would that all the people of the LORD were
prophets!"
Monday, Sep 27, 2021MEMORIAL OF VINCENT DE PAUL, PRIEST
God works with us as we areSaint Vincent de Paul is known for founding two religious orders, reforming the church, and serving the poor to such an extent thathe is the patron of all works of charity. Many schools and parishesbear his name. But in his lifetime, he was also known for beingirritable and quick-tempered—which his friends confirmed and hehimself admitted. He said it was only God’s grace that made himcompassionate, humble, and generous. He’s a perfect examplethat we don’t have to be perfect to do saintly work—if we let Godsoften our hard-heartedness, what great things we might do.
TODAY'S READINGS: Zechariah 8:1-8; Luke 9:46-50 (455). “For the
one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest.”
Tuesday, Sep 28, 2021MEMORIAL OF WENCESLAUS, MARTYR
A faith that runs in the familyGood King Wenceslaus is, of course, best known for his care ofthe poor and the concern he showed his servant, as immortalizedin the famous Christmas carol. Indeed, it was young Wenceslaus’habit to sneak out in the middle of the night and—with his servantassisting—roam the countryside looking for poor or imprisonedpeople he could anonymously help with his almsgiving. ButWenceslaus and his grandmother, Saint Ludmila, could also bepatron saints for grandchildren who are raised in the CatholicChristian faith primarily by their grandparents. Pray for all moderngrandparents who assume this role.
TODAY'S READINGS: Zechariah 8:20-23; Luke 9:51-56 (456). “Many
peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord.”
Wednesday, Sep 29, 2021FEAST OF MICHAEL, GABRIEL, AND RAPHAEL, ARCHANGELS
God’s special care for migrantsEvery minute of the day 20 people in the world leave everythingbehind to escape war, persecution, or terror. The archangels ofthe Bible represent God’s special care for these migrants. Michaelwas the guardian of Israel during their captivity in the foreign landof Babylon. Gabriel is the patron saint of diplomats andambassadors living in foreign countries. Raphael is featured in theBook of Tobit accompanying the story’s hero, Tobias, on hisjourney to a foreign land to find a wife. The church recognized
World Day of Migrants and Refugees last Sunday. Pray that thearchangels guide and protect migrants and refugees makingperilous journeys everywhere.
TODAY'S READINGS: Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14 or Revelation 12:7-12a;John 1:47-51 (647). “You will see heaven opened and the angels
of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
Thursday, Sep 30, 2021MEMORIAL OF JEROME, PRIEST, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
Translating the faith for the agesWhere would the church be without the word? If you have everread a verse from the Bible, thank Saint Jerome (347-419). Histranslation of the Bible from Greek and Hebrew into Latin set thestandard until the mid-20th century, paving the way for scholarshipthat affects our contemporary translations of scripture. His pivotalwriting and translating earned him the rare title of “doctor of thechurch.” Give a nod to Saint Jerome by reading a favorite scripturepassage today.
TODAY'S READINGS: Nehemiah 8:1-4a, 5-6, 7b-12; Luke 10:1-12(458). “Say to them, ‘The Kingdom of God is at hand for you.’”
Friday, Oct 01, 2021MEMORIAL OF THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS, VIRGIN, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
Graceful glancesGlances are totally underrated. They seem trivial, hurried andfleeting, even stolen! They are the smallest of gestures, barelyregistering a flick of the eye. It is surprising then that a glance canalso be a prayer. Saint Thérèse of Lisieux wrote, “For me, prayeris an aspiration of the heart, it is a simple glance directed toheaven, it is a cry of gratitude and love in the midst of trial as wellas joy; finally, it is something.” Our prayerful “glances” aresignificant. They register with God. A glance can communicateeverything to God, especially when life leaves us wordless. Pausenow for a moment and glance at God.
TODAY'S READINGS: Baruch 1:15-22; Luke 10:13-16 (459). “Justice is
with the Lord, our God.”
Saturday, Oct 02, 2021MEMORIAL OF THE HOLY GUARDIAN ANGELS
All night and all dayYears back, in perhaps what were more innocent times (or at leastappear so to us now), Catholic schoolchildren were encouraged toleave a little space on their chairs for their guardian angels. Thischarming bit of nostalgia reveals a deeper article of faith. Frombiblical times to the present, the testimony on angels guiding ushas been consistent. Saint Augustine said, “Go where we will, ourangels are always with us,” while Saint Bernard encouragedChristians to “Make the holy angels your friends . . . we havenothing to fear under the protection of these guardians.” Perhapsthe larger truth is that although suffering and even tragedy maycome our way, if we leave our hearts open, we will not be leftalone. God will be at our side. Scoot over a bit!
TODAY'S READINGS: Baruch 4:5-12, 27-29 (460); Matthew 18:1-5, 10(650). “Their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my
heavenly Father.”
