In this Sunday’s Gospel, we find the truth that loving God isn’t merely a matter of fervor in our hearts, but that it must be expressed in doing good for the sake of others.

As members of OLV’s SVdP conference, we are blessed with the generosity of our OLV parish community which enables us to adhere to the word of God---that we are all God’s children and He calls us to care for each other by helping those in our community whose needs are much greater than our own.

You are welcome to join us at our next SVdP meeting on Tuesday, November 14, at 7:00 p.m., in the St. John XXIII room.

OLVSCHOOLNEWSGreetings from the Middle School Literature Teacher!

I am excited to be back at OLV for my 28th year of teaching and blessed to be in such a supportive environment. As a sixth grade homeroom teacher, I welcomed a wonderful new group of middle school students. We had a great time at camp and enjoyed summer-like weather. Now that it is October, the 6th

grade students are adjusting well to life downstairs. All the middle school students have been hard at work in our literature classes. They have already read over 400 pages in books of their choosing and turned in weekly annotations that encourage thoughtful, analytical reading. In our literature studies, the eighth grade students have been studying famous works of the strange and mysterious. Following our short story unit, we will study the play “12 Angry Men” and the novel Animal Farm. The seventh grade students have been reading famous works by O. Henry, Saki, Richard Wright, Guy De Maupassant, and Shirley Jackson. The suspenseful plots contain irony and literary elements that capture our attention. Soon, they will begin book clubs and study Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. After Thanksgiving, the 7th graders have the opportunity to see the play at Meadow Brook Theatre. The 6th graders learned how to annotate independent reading and have been doing a great job with that. They have been learning how to read more closely and collaborate with peers to respond to stories that require re-reading, analyzing, and inferring. These higher thinking skills will prepare them for the more challenging works they will read in middle school. Soon we will start a Sherlock Holmes play and read a famous Agatha Christie novel And Then There Were None. This scary story is a tradition here at OLV that the 6th graders love. (I had to start reading it only during the day!) But more than our classroom achievements, the atmosphere at OLV, set by the students and staff under the leadership of Father Denis, Dan Timmis, and Kate Szuba, is one of dedication, kindness, and humility. Our weekly all-school Masses and the many beautiful traditions are what make OLV such a great place to be. I am thankful every day for the opportunity to teach here. -Margie MacLean, Middle School Literature Teacher
