Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Family prayer is one of the most fruitful and unifying practices in which we can participate. Every time a family prays together Christ is present. This wonderful and powerful opportu-nity should be an everyday occurrence in our homes.

Prayer for Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a dan-ger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conven-tional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane sea-son we turn to you, O Loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and ani-mated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Sin to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a storm less eternity awaits us. Amen Rev. Maurice Schexnadyer, Bishop of Lafayette in Louisiana, Diocese of Lafayette, 2006 Imprima-

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: It’s high summer now, school is out, the pace of work slows, and some people drift away. There are visitors in the churches every summer, and familiar faces are “among the missing.” Some find the summer’s call more appealing than the summons of the church bells. Many, however, would not dream of missing a Sunday, and so they make their way to Mass in unfamiliar places, watching the lo-cals for clues as to when to sit or stand, where the Communion stations are. In answering the call, they keep the “sabbatical” rhythm of the Christian life: every seventh day, the Body of Christ assembles for worship. For centuries, there was no obligation to Sunday Mass in the sense of a written law, but Christians have always yearned to be together on Sunday. In the city of Abitina, during a per-secution by the Emperor Diocletian, a group of Christians were urged to stop worshiping to-gether on Sundays. They responded, “Then take our lives, for without the Sunday we can-not live.” By a curious coincidence, the ap-pointed readings today center us on thoughts of peace. On our Independence Day, the ex-perience of worship situates us in community, and evokes a commitment from us to be advo-cates of peace in all aspects of our society’s life.—James Field, Copyright © J. Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

St. Benedict: Born in Nursia, Italy, he was educated in Rome, was repelled by the vices of the city and in about 500 fled to Enfide, thirty miles away. He decided to live the life of a hermit and settled at mountainous Subiaco, where he lived in a cave for three years, fed by a monk named Romanus. Despite Bene-dict's desire for solitude, his holiness and aus-terities became known and he was asked to be their abbot by a community of monks at Vico-varo. He accepted, but when the monks re-sisted his strict rule and tried to poison him, he returned to Subiaco and soon attracted great numbers of disciples. He organized them into twelve monasteries under individual priors he appointed, made manual work part of the pro-gram, and soon Subiaco became a center of spirituality and learning. He left suddenly, re-portedly because of the efforts of a neighboring priest, Florentius, to undermine his work, and in about 525 settled at Monte Cassino.

He destroyed a pagan temple to Apollo on its crest, brought the people of the neighboring area back to Christianity, and in about 530 be-gan to build the monastery that was to be the birthplace of Western monasticism. Soon disci-ples again flocked to him as his reputation for holiness, wisdom, and miracles spread far and wide. He organized the monks into a single monastic community and wrote his famous rule prescribing common sense, a life of moderate asceticism, prayer, study, and work, and com-munity life under one superior. It stressed obe-

dience, stability, zeal, and had the Divine Of-fice as the center of monastic life; it was to affect spiritual and mo-nastic life in the West for centuries to come.

While ruling his monks (most of whom, includ-ing Benedict, were not ordained), he counseled rulers and Popes, ministered to the poor and destitute about him, and tried to repair the rav-ages of the Lombard Totila's invasion. He died at Monte Cassino on March 21. Excerpted from the Dictionary of Saints, John J. Delaney

Collect: O God, who made the Abbot Saint Benedict an outstanding master in the school of divine service, grant, we pray, that, putting nothing before love of you, we may hasten with a loving heart in the way of your commands. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your

Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. dating back to 1415 was found at the Abbey of Metten in Bavaria, giving an explanation of these letters. They were the initial letters of a Latin prayer of exorcism against Satan.

Since "Carmel is All Mary's" we maintain a fer-vent devotion to Our Lady, celebrating her feasts with solemnity, living out her requests and imitating her inner life of faith, hope, and love. July is a special month as it the time for the annual Novena to Our Lady of Mount Car-mel. This year’s Novena theme will be Our Lady of Carmel, Mother of the Church. How fitting for a celebration of Mary during the Year of Faith since Pope Emeritus Benedict en-trusted this special time in the Church to the grace of her intercession and the power of her example. Our Lady of Mount Carmel is seen by Carmelites as the perfect model of the inte-rior life of prayer and virtue as well as the per-son who was in life closest to Jesus. But the Lady of Carmel is a Mother too, Mother of all Carmelites and Mother of the Church. In this Motherhood she is also the closest person to us; she ”embraces each and every one in the Church and embraces each and every one through the Church.” (Bl. John Paul II)...Mary is the Mother, she helps us to grow as human beings and in the faith, to be strong… to live responsibly, to strive ever higher (Pope Fran-cis).

July 8 through July 16 there will be Mass and Special Prayers each evening at 6:00PM. All are invited to attend.

These two titles of Our Lady will be prayerfully explored in depth by the Novena homilist, Archbishop Jean Benjamin Sleiman, a Dis-calced Carmelite who is the Latin Archbishop of Baghdad and the head of the Latin Church Community in Iraq. You are invited to join in the Novena at the Carmelite Monastery at 1250 Carmel Dr., Lafayette, LA. The No-vena prayer is next for those who can not join the group in Lafayette.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Monastery of Mary, Mother of Grace

Novena Prayer In this Year if Faith, let us turn to Our Lady of Carmel, Mother of the Church, in faith, confi-dence, and childlike trust in her love. OUR LADY OF CARMEL, your soul was a sanctuary reserved for God alone, where love and zeal for his glory reigned. Fill our Holy Fa-ther, the bishops, priests and all who minister in the Church with the same zeal and dedica-tion. IMAGE OF CARMEL, your heart was a dwell-ing place for God where you loved with Him and pondered His word day and night. Teach all Christians to mediate on the Word of God and to make it the criterion of their lives and actions. BEAUTY OFCARMEL, your life was a blossom-laden Vine. Help families to grow in faith, hope and fidelity so that their family vine may blos-som in love and be fruitful with the new growth of children. MOTHER OF THE CHURCH, your will was fixed in God’s. Help all your children to be strong in faith and teach them how to face the difficulties and problems of life firmly adhering to the teachings of the Church. MOTHER OF FAITH, your attitude was that of the “handmaid of the Lord”; help young per-sons to make definitive choices and lifetime commitments to the married state or the priest-hood or religious life. MOTHER OF TENDERNESS, your compas-sion embraces all our needs. Sustain the sick, the sorrowful, the hopeless and the lonely; up-hold those who fight for religious freedom and protection for the unborn and the aged; aid those who struggle with financial difficulties, family issues and unemployment. We resolve to walk in your footsteps and to imitate your vir-tues, confident in your all powerful intercession.( mention your intentions) Amen.
