~ Our Lady Queen of Martyrs ~Dear Brothers and Sisters:I have loved the story of the multiplication of the loaves and the fishes since I was child. Part of this is the whole miracle aspect. Jesus makes something out of nothing. But it doesn’t stop there as if that were not enough. No, Jesus takes it a step further and feeds over 5000 people at one sitting to the point where everyone has their fill and some is actually left over! It’s simply mind boggling. We love the miracle stories, right? We love to hear about God’s in-breaking into our world. We love the stories of pillars of fire and parting of the seas. We love to hear the stories of Jesus raising the dead and curing the sick. They are stories that challenge the natural order of our world and turn it upside down. And let’s face it, wouldn’t our world be a better place if God made more of these miracles happen? Wouldn’t it be a better world if God gave Pope Francis the power to cure cancer? Wouldn’t it be great if Jesus came back and fed all of the hungry people in the world? Wouldn’t it be great if no one had to die ever again because God intervened directly in our world and changed how things worked? Then we could all believe without a shadow of a doubt, right? Actually then we would have to believe, because we would have no choice, right? And I guess that’s the very reason why God doesn’t intervene in our world. He gives us just enough miracles to keep us hungry. To do more would be to limit the freedom he has given us. A freedom that lets us chose to love him and follow him, or reject him and go our own way. Let’s say that you meet someone and fall madly in love with them, but sadly they don’t feel the same way about you. But you find a way to force or coerce this person so they have no choice but to be in a relationship with you. Is it really a loving and healthy relationship? NO! It’s slavery of a kind, right? That other person is there only because they have no other choice but to be in the relationship with you, but it will never really be love. In the same way, while miracles are great and they capture our imagination, they can never take the place of a real faith built on a free choice to love God. God gives us the choice to love him. Miracles are wonderful and while they capture our imaginations, they can never be a substitute for a real faith built on love and trust. Love and trust take real work on our part. It’s here that God challenges us to do our part in keeping our part of the relationship. No relationship can last if there is no communication. Spouses who stop speaking aren’t going to last long if they never communicate with each other. Friends who stop loving and supporting one another aren’t going to be friends for long if they don’t work at their relationship. God expects the same from you and me. If we sit around waiting for miracles to make our faith certain, it’s going to be a very weak faith and based more on what God can do for me rather than on a relationship that goes deeper than fulfilling my present needs. So how do we build that relationship? Well, following on the examples I gave above of how relationships fall apart, the cure for those failures can be applied to our relationship with God. Communication is key and for us the key that opens that lock is prayer. While God has a pretty good idea of what our needs are and where our heart is, he likes the sound of our voices. He wants us to lift our hearts and minds up to him. He knows that the very act of praying changes us and the more we pray, the more our hearts change. Prayer makes us more like him and shouldn’t children resemble their parents? So here is my question for you this week: Do I appreciate the miraculous nature of my daily life and thank God for the gift of life? What hinders me from talking to God more?Peace,Fr. Steve

What Family Members Say About Good Shepherd Hospice

“Your care and concern while we dealt with Mom’s illness was heartfelt. Everyone involved made our journey to Mom’s passing less stressful and more meaningful.” “My father came onto your hospice program on so many medications. It was so difficult for him to stay awake when we desperately wanted to spend every minute with him. Within a few hours of your care, and with the help of your doctor, his medications were managed and he was in total comfort and as a family we were able to talk, laugh, and enjoy our time together.” “Your nurse Anna was a guardian angel to myself and my cousin…My cousin went on her journey knowing that she was loved here on earth. After the experience of seeing my cousin pass, your staff stayed with me and comforted me.”

Scripture Lesson: Mark 6:30-34 A Time to Rest and Renew! Summer is the time for vacations. We work hard during the year and we need some time for fun, rest, and relaxation.

Jesus also knew that rest and relaxation were important for his disciples. They had traveled with him from town to town, telling everyone about the Good News of God’s love. They would preach, teach and heal the sick. They worked so hard that they often didn't even have time to stop to eat or sleep. They became very tired.

When Jesus saw how tired they were, he said to them, "Come with me to a quiet place and get some rest." The gospel then says, "So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place." Let’s think about those two sentences.

First, Jesus said, "Come with me." When we take a vacation, we need to remember to take Jesus with us. Some people never give Jesus a thought when they go on vacation. We should always include Jesus in our lives, even when we are on vacation.

Next, the gospel says the disciples went away to a quiet place. Their main purpose was to rest and renew their strength. Some people plan a vacation that is so full of activities that when they come home, they are more tired than when they left!

Hopefully you are enjoying a great summer vacation. Don't forget to keep Jesus with you, and don't forget to set aside some time for rest and relaxation. Then you will be able to start the new year refreshed and renewed! Dear Lord, thank you for vacation time when we can rest and renew our strength. Help us to remember to include you in everything we do. Amen.

~ Bill Ayres: Reflections on the Readings ~July 22, 2018

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL according to MARK

Egyptians with Judea and specifically Jerusalem in the middle. The Jewish king, Zedekiah was torn between the two enemies and was week. Jeremiah has a message from God for him and the people. “Woe to the shepherds who mislead and scatter the flock of my pasture.” “You have scattered my sheep and driven them away.” “I myself will gather the remnant of my flock from all the lands to which I have driven them and bring them back to their meadow.” “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord when I will raise up a righteous shoot to David; as king shall he reign and govern wisely, he shall do what is right and just in the land. In his days Judah will be saved.”Over many centuries Israel had many kings, some good like David, the best, and many others weak and dishonest like this king Zedekiah who was responsible for the horrible Babylonian Exile and the destruction of Jerusalem. Jeremiah has God promising to send a new king in the quality of the great king David. Of course, the gospels tell us that Jesus came from the line of David so his disciples saw him as that righteous shepherd.

Here we have the theme of Jesus as the good shepherd following from the two previous readings. The apostles have been out proclaiming the good news, teaching and doing good deeds for the people. Jesus tells them “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest for a while.” “People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat. So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place.” Jesus is being the good shepherd to his apostles, telling them to take a break, have a meal, share stories from the road. BUT, it doesn’t work. “People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them.”Now, we see Jesus as the good shepherd for all the people. “When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.” This notion of Jesus being a good shepherd is somewhat foreign to us who have never met a shepherd, no less have known one, but it was a powerful image for people of his time. It meant safety, caring, nurturing and fidelity to the task of protecting. That is something we can relate to today in our lives. Jesus is our protector.

Responsorial Psalm: “The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.” This is the most quoted and prayed line in all the Psalms even though shepherds are not a part of our daily lives or thinking. The power though, is that Jesus is always with us and takes care of us. Do you believe that? How have you experienced the care of Jesus?

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the ephesians

This letter has some of the deepest and most meaningful messages for our faith. Here Paul wants to bridge the gap between Jews and Gentiles.“In Christ Jesus you who once were far off have become near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity, through his flesh, abolishing the law with its commandments and legal claims, that he might create one new person in place of the two, thus establishing peace.” “He came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near, for through him we both have access in one spirit to the Father.”Paul was a devout Jew who loved his people and saw that their salvation was right there in Jesus. He also became friends with many Gentiles and he saw that they too are called to follow Jesus. “Through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.” He spent his life trying to bring these two different peoples together. Sometimes he succeeded, but more often he did not. It was a great suffering for him but it never deterred him from his mission.Sometimes, we too succeed in what is most important to us and sometimes, often times we seem to fail, but there is always another day, another chance if we remember that we too are called to bring peace and love to all people, starting with those closest to us.

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF THE PROHET JEREMIAHJeremiah was one of the most courageous and tortured of all the prophets. This reading takes place during the battle for power between the Babylonians and the
