Message from the Padre

Our Gospel this weekend is about the story of Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector from Jeri-

cho, who heard about Jesus coming to his town… and as the Gospel has said, he was so small that he

had to climb a sycamore tree so that he could see a full view of Jesus. But it’s not about his height

why people look down on Zacchaeus. It is about the kind of work he was doing. He was a tax collec-

tor and during Jesus’ time, tax collectors were despised by many because they were corrupt and con-

sidered traitors to their own people. Yes, it is true that Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector and maybe

he became wealthy and rich by deceiving and extorting other people, but does this warrant him to be

condemned?

My dear friends, remember when Jesus saw Zacchaeus up in the tree, he did not say “Hey

you....go down or you might fall,” but he called out his name and said, “Zacchaeus, come down

quickly, for today I must stay at your house." And just like that Zacchaeus’ transformation came about. His true goodness

came to life… he repented and made public amends for his wrongdoing. He went from stealing and cheating to caring and

helping the poor. As one of the Desert Fathers has said , “Man can attain to the likeness of God... in just one day... if he so

desired it.” Yes, perhaps the story of Zacchaeus has more to teach us than what we think. Let us remember that the love of

God does not change us into some other person. He calls us by our name for us to discover who we are and who we can be-

come... just like what happened to Zacchaeus.

This weekend, we are invited not only to pray for vocations but also to call someone by name who might be think-

ing of the priesthood or a religious life, but who are afraid to say something or do not know how or where to start. Yes, it

takes courage to write a name of a person who is thinking of priestly vocation and religious life, but we will never know if we

don’t try. and present that person for a conversation about a vocation to the priesthood and religious life. We will never know

until we ask. Remember what St. Paul has said in our second reading today “Our God will make you worthy of his calling

and bring to fulfillment every good purpose and every effort of faith… so that the name of the lord Jesus may be glorified

in you and you in him.”

Thirty-First Sunday

in Ordinary Time Wisdom 11:22 - 12:2, 2 Thessalonians 1:11 - 2:2

Luke 19:1-10

Today let us put ourselves in the shoes of Zacchaeus, so eager

to see Jesus that he climbed a tree to see over the crowd. Jesus

is with us today, in our neighbor, in our midst as we gather to-

gether in his name, and in the bread and wine we offer as it is

blessed and broken. We don’t need to climb a tree, yet we may

find him difficult to see. Let us pray today for the eyes of Zac-

chaeus, eager to see Jesus wherever he can be found.

What are the degrees or core principles of The Knights of Colum-

bus? Each Degree corresponds with one of the principles or the

order: Charity (Exemplification) is the first core of principle,

Unity (Admission) is the second, Fraternity (Formation) is the

third and Patriotism (Patriotism) is the fourth core of principle.

The organization was founded by Father Michael James in 1882

and throughout the world there are an estimated two million

members. It is now the largest Catholic fraternal service in the

world.

We at Our Lady Queen of Peace are privileged because we have a

local council which began here in 1999 and is active in our parish

as well as our community. These gentlemen meet once a month

for forecasting and selecting possible projects with their officers

leading the council each year, thus gaining friendship, the pride of

accomplishment or worthy benefits, and sharing of their faith and

sometimes their work with other councils to fulfill the promise of

the organization. And what an active, charitable council we are

privileged to have as they sponsor and support the need of indi-

viduals and charitable projects right here in their own region.

The local council of Knights with us support many local and re-

gional projects, their largest being the annual Blood Drive in Sep-

tember, but the list goes on and on as you see them collecting or

supplying so many other charities or needs that come to them for

support and help. These are only a few. They step in as well to

help with our own parish needs, such as the Italian Festival held

on the grounds at Our Lady Queen of Peace. As the holiday sea-

son enters the scene, they see to it that many families have funds

or food and supplies to enjoy the celebrations. They bring home a

hero to spend the holidays with their family. For children, they

provide school supplies and, during the entire year, they solicit

and supply monetary support to aid in many other organizations

or individuals that need help. Other yearly donations are col-

lected for families and emotional support is available as well. It

is a wonderful example of an international group.

The Knights of Columbus welcomes new active members to the

Knights of Columbus of Our Lady Queen of Peace. The organi-

zation welcomes and needs new members to carry out their pro-

jects and to help and provide emotional and financial assistance to

others who need such consideration.

If you pass a small booth at the front of the church and see a gen-

tleman volunteering his time to collect for a project selected by

our Knights of Columbus group say, “Thank you” and if possible

contribute.

“Entering Canaan” “Men’s Day of Prayer and Healing

from Abortion”

November 16, 2019

Paterson, NJ

An “Entering Canaan” Men’s “Day of Prayer and Healing” for

those men who are suffering as a result of losing a child to abor-

tion will take place Saturday, November 16, 2019 in Paterson,

New Jersey. The day, hosted by The Franciscan Friars of the

Renewal, will consist of a witness, talks, video on healing,

group, the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Holy Sacrifice

of the Mass. For further information and confidential reserva-

tions please call: Lumina/Hope and Healing after abortion: 877-

586-4621, or email at [email protected].

The 25th bi-annual 40 Days for Life Campaign takes place

from September 25th through November 3rd. Join us to pray

for an end to abortion worldwide, but particularly to end

abortions in our local community. The Cherry Hill Women’s

Center performs over 200 abortions a week through 24

weeks gestation. Can you spare one hour a week to pray

peacefully at the site and offer hope to women going in? The

Burlington County Diocesan Respect Life Committee will be

represented each Thursday through November 28th from 11

AM - 12 PM. It has been recorded that up to 75% of ap-

pointments are “no shows” when there is someone present

outside an abortion facility. Please go to

www.40daysforlife.com/cherryhill to get more information

and to sign up. Call Claire at 856-313-9861 or email

[email protected] with any questions or concerns.

All the parishes of the Diocese of Trenton, are partici-pating in CALLED BY NAME, a program of vocations awareness that begins this weekend.

This program offers an opportunity for us to pray for vocations; to recognize gifts and potential for leader-ship and service in members of our parish; and finally, to call forth and encourage these members to share their gifts in the priesthood.

Perhaps you know a man (high school age or older) who would, in your opinion, have the qualities to be-come a priest.

Please recommend this person by filling out the re-sponse card found in the pews. Put the card in the collection basket either this weekend or next weekend. You may also drop off the card at the parish office.

DIOCESE OF TRENTON Next weekend our parish will take up the Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). Estab-lished by St. John Paul II in 1985, the AMS is the only U.S. Diocese responsible for providing pastoral care to men and women serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, enrolled at a U.S. Military Academy, being treated as a patient at any of the 153 U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, or working for the federal government beyond U.S. borders - including those from our own parish and diocese. Including families, AMS priests and deacons serve approximately 1.8 million Catholics who hail from 50 states and U.S. territories. While the salaries and retirement of Catholic military chap-lains are paid for by the U.S. Government, the AMS does not receive any funding from the government or military for pro-gram and administrative costs. To learn more about the AMS, go to www.milarch.org/nationalcollection. Please give generously.
