Message from Fr Joe Our gospel this weekend is about divorce and the teachings of Jesus

on how divorce left the Church with a two-fold legacy First the Church contin-

ues to restate Jesusrsquo prophetic message of marriage ldquowhat God has joined to-

gether let no human being dividerdquo On the other hand the Church constantly

reflects the pastoral concern for those families who have suffered divorce

My dear friends divorce is a painful subject There is always that

pain of separation and the reality that affects not only the couple but also af-

fects the children and the extended family It is precisely for this reason that we

need to bring Jesusrsquo love into this situation Christrsquos love is big enough to reconcile the gap of division in broken

families

But this is not to say that the only solution to marital problems is to end with divorce The vows to love another

person as long as we live should always be upheld and kept It is a sacrament a covenant a promise not only to

your spouse but also a promise to God Sometimes as much as we hope and pray we fail to keep these promises

Yes we all desire to follow Godrsquos commandments but there are times we fail God more than we should But let us

not forget that the mercy of Christ is a mercy that can fully embrace whatever has brought two people to a divorce He

calls us today to gather under this blanket of mercy so that we too can understand and show our love and compassion

for those whose marriage did not last and ended up in a divorce

Yes this weekend Jesus presents a vision of what marriage should be But on the other hand he utters no

words of condemning ldquothe divorcedrdquo This tells us that no matter how broken or messy our marriage ended Jesus

welcomes and unites us all We should not feel less loved because we know that there is always a new beginning and

all our problems will be healed by our loving and merciful God

In Ordinary Time Genesis 2 18-24 Hebrews 2 9-11

Mark 10 2-16

Today we travel back in time to when God created humankind

Realizing that the first human needed a suitable partner God

formed a woman out of the manrsquos own body In the Gospel

Jesus quotes the line that ends the first reading - that husband

and wife are formed as one flesh - to speak of this new entity

He follows this lesson by welcoming children telling the disci-

ples that one must accept the kingdom of God like a child

Listening to scripture today let us embrace the innocence and

wonder of a new being

Pray for our military home and abroad

Please pray for the men and women now serving in the

military especially the loved ones of our parishioners

Fr Joe

Twenty-Seventh Sunday
