Ordinary Time. The readings remind us that the salvation is offered to all but the gate to our salvation is narrow because it involves carrying the cross. “Lord, Will only a few people be saved?” To this question Jesus replied, “strive to enter through the narrow gate; for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter; but will not be strong enough.” Jesus reminds us today that being saved is not easy, following Jesus is not easy, being a Christian is not easy. For indeed, it is truly the way of the cross. Jesus says in Matthew 16:24, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily and fallow me.” That means the cross is our identity as Christians; the cross is the key to our salvation; and the cross is the narrow gate that Jesus is talking about in today’s gospel. Yes, the gate to heaven is narrow; the good news is that we have Jesus. So, let’s put our faith and trust in Jesus, for indeed He is the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6). Amen
