NOVEMBER 17 , 2019 NE WSLETTER
Finn was nominated by Mrs. LaFrance for demonstrating the virtue of Courtesy. As Finn was coming through the door from downstairs he stopped to turn back and hold the door open for Mrs. LaFrance as she led her class to Spanish class.
WITNESS OF THE WEEK
The "Witness of the Week" initiative forms the students to notice virtuous behavior among their peers and highlights concrete examples of how we can live a virtuous life. When ei-ther a student or staff member sees a student perform a virtuous act, they can nominate that student. Every Friday one student is chosen as that week's "Witness of the Week"!
On Thursday, November 7, the students and staff of Our Lady Star of the Sea School hon-ored the veteran’s of the parish at the school’s Annual Veteran’s Day Assembly.
American Heritage Girls, Troop WA0716 began the event with the Flag Ceremony. The school band and choir performed patri-otic songs in honor of our very important guests. Each branch of the Armed Forces was proudly represented.
Our guest speaker for this special event was Mr. Gordon Lau, SMSGT USAF-Ret., who also serves as one of the school’s classroom aids.
This week’s witness of the week is Finn Bray from the 7th Grade!
HONORING OUR VETERANS
TRIP TO THE U.S. NAVAL UNDERSEA MUSEUM
In honor of Veteran’s Day, Sr. Daniela took her 5th Grade class on a field trip to the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport. The class had a great time exploring the museum and learning about the history of submarines.
Our Lady Star of the Sea School has a school wide virtue program with the hope of teaching its students how to live a life of virtue and strive to become a saint. Each month we focus on a new virtue. This month we will be focusing on...
COURTESY being thoughtful of others
Saint Who Models This Virtue—Saint Martin de Porres (1579-1639, Peru) Feast Day: November 3
St Martin de Porres’ father almost never came to see him. When Martin was old enough, his father had trained him to be a doctor. Martin became a doctor and a Dominican Friar who was very thoughtful of people who were sick. He insisted on doing all the lowliest jobs for them. Sometimes, he brought poor sick people home and put them to sleep in his own bed!
“The submarine control center was a great hands on
activity. I loved using the real life controls and periscope.”

DAILY MASS 8:00 am
Confessions Daily
9:45 a.m. 5:00 pm.
Father Emmerich returns to Star of the Sea for the parish Mission, to reflect on the goodness, beauty, and truth of the faith with which God has gifted us.
Steps to Wholeness After a reflection on the classical Catholic definition of prayer, and taking his cue from St. Teresa of Avila’s requisites for a vital prayer life, Father’s conferences will spell out the concrete steps needed in the life of every wounded Christian — Christians wounded by Original Sin and by personal sin. Many are familiar with the writings of the Catholic convert Peter Kreeft, a professor of philosophy who has written over eighty wonderful books on Christian philosophy, theology, and apologetics. In one of his books he reminds us that we are addicted to sin. No one is addicted to patience, charity, humility, etc. We are addicted to sin and thus he calls us “sinaholics.” Thus Father Emmerich will focus on the steps needed by “sinaholics” that give us access to the life of grace as St. Teresa recommends. By leading the parishioners of Star of the Sea in an exploration of the guiding principles that lead to a deep inner peace in the midst of a troubled world, his conferences will focus on recovery from the effects of sin in our lives, and explore other issues of our spiritual warfare. He will briefly review the role of feelings and emotions in our lives. And he will help lead us through the way to heal our resentments, and much more as he exams the Steps that lead to the fullness of life and love.
Fr. Emmerich is a priest of the Holy Name Province of the Dominican Order and is currently ministering with Western Dominican Preaching.
For the past thirty-seven years he has been involved in giving retreats to Mother Teresa’s Priests and Sisters in Mexico, Poland, Guatemala, Calcutta, Russia, and Africa. He currently resides at Saint Albert Priory in Oakland, CA.
From a family with alcohol and drug addiction, Fr. Emmerich has studied the 12-Steps for his own healing and to help others to overcome obstacles and find peace.
His series of conferences for EWTN is entitled “The Eucharistic Principles of the Spiritual Life.”
