Though both were born and raised in the same town in the Cagayan Valley on the northern tip of the Philippine island of Luzon, Sam & Fely Quemado never met each other there. No, it took going to college in the 1960’s for God to help them find each other. Sam moved to Hawaii in 1972 with his family but their relation-ship continued across the miles of ocean. Two years later, in 1974, they were married in the Philippines, whereupon Fely joined Sam in Hawaii.
Both of their sons, Armando (Jr.) and Brian, were born in Hawaii. Brian now lives in Aiea. Armando lives in Las Vegas with his wife & 3 children. Sam & Fely have lived in Salt Lake, Kalihi, and now reside in Waipahu. Sam has been a realtor/broker for his entire professional career, and owns “1001 Realty Company.” Fely has worked with Bank of Hawaii in finance & accounting for 30 years, and assists Sam with the paperwork for his business.
The Quemados journey to Aiea UMC (where they’ve been worshipping for about two years now) began at Aldersgate UMC (the original Filipino-language congregation in the Hawaii District), then moved to an off-shoot small group ministry in Waipahu, set up by Aldersgate UMC (where they worshipped for 5 years). Most recently, they attended Ewa Beach UMC, and carried out various leadership roles in that con-gregation. When they first attended Aiea UMC, they were pleasantly surprised to find that Alan & Mary Jane Petalver, friends of theirs, had also recently started attending.
Sam is a die-hard Manny Pacquiao fan… and the two of them enjoy ballroom dancing! Fely has recently joined both the Finance Committee at Aiea UMC as well as the Hula Passion Group. Their niece, Rochelle, lives with them and is a junior at Waipahu High School. She also joined AUMC in November with her aunty & uncle. We are pleased to have these wonderful people as a part of our ohana!

“If it had not been the LORD who was on our side… then the flood would have swept us away, the torrent would have gone over us; then over us
would have gone the raging waters… Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven & earth.” (Psalm 124:1, 4-5, 8)
On November 8, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan (“Yolanda”) ripped through the Philippines on its way to Southeast Asia. With winds clocked at 195mph, it was easily the strongest tropical storm ever recorded at landfall. Over 6,200 people were confirmed dead, with another 1800 still missing.
Though the exact figures are still rising, damage is estimated at over $1.5 billon. According to United Nations officials, over 11 million people were rendered homeless from this devastating storm.
Last month, I had the privilege of making my 3rd trip to the island nation of the Philippines. Every time I go, I return having been so blessed by the incredible spirit of the people. Granted, I have visited a specific group each time – those in the Church, and connected with Compassion International – but they have consistently been filled with an inherent joy, peace & contentment that is unrivaled. Compassion International is an organization whose purpose is releasing children from poverty (in all its forms) in Jesus’ Name. And they fulfill their purpose excellently!
The first portion of my trip was spent just North of Manila, in the small town of Antipolo. We were at a retreat center, leading a retreat for the Philippine Compassion staff. Compassion, as a policy, always hires indigenous workers for their national offices around the globe. So we had the pleasure of spending time with about 90 amazing Filipinos who love Jesus, and are committed to helping the poorest of children in their country. A total of about 20 pastors, church leaders, and dancers came with us to be a blessing for these amazing people. My job? “Fun & Games” (hey, that’s what my official nametag actually said!). Yes, I got to play with them over the course of 3 days! We played People Bingo, Gorilla-Man-Gun, Indoor Beachball Volleyball, Dodgeball & Paintball! (Plus, I got up at 6am to play basketball with some of my fellow ball-crazy brothers a couple of mornings!) By the end of the retreat, Pastor Noel Pabiona (the National Director for Compassion in the Philip-pines) deemed me an “honorary Filipino,” because my passion for games rivaled theirs!
The second part of my trip took us down to the island of Palawan – much, much closer to the path that Typhoon Haiyan traveled. In fact, one of Pastor Peter’s Life Community members (from the Victory Group) has a brother who lives on Palawan (and lost everything during the typhoon). We were the guests of Pastor Ancho Buenaventura of Life Church in Puerto Princessa. Life Church is a vibrant, dymanic congregation of over 3,000 who love Jesus with great abandon! It is estimated that 75% of their people are youth & young adults (including their leadership!). They sponsor a Compassion Project in their community, and serve 40 moms & their infants, plus over 350 children as part of the Child Sponsor Program!
What greatly impressed me on this trip, however, is their renewed Discipleship plan. Not merely content to having “church members,” they are committed to “making disciples.” Pastor Ancho and his wife Lut each have 12 church leaders under them, whom they disciple weekly. Those 24 leaders also, in turn, have 12 people under them… who, in turn, each have 12 under them, etc. They’ve elected to spend the time discipling one another, rather then simply propagating church programs. The results are incredible! So many people have come to have an active & life-changing relationship with God… and they’re regularly bringing new people to worship (and getting them involved in a life-group as well) & faith in Jesus!
Yes, Typhoon Haiyan may have had devastating effects on the people of the Philippines last November, but the power of God is alive & well there, too. And from what I could witness, greater is the One who is in & among them, than any repercussion of that typhoon! Praise be to God for the life, power, & faithfulness that I witnessed in the Philippines!

NEXT SERMON SERIES PREVIEW:
In the Life Communities, there are many exciting
things happening. Looking back at these events– some
funny, others interesting or heart-moving, they all have
one thing in common. In each experience, faith is
strengthened. I gathered some of these stories from each
of the Life Communities’ groups and made a booklet.
The title of the booklet is “What’s Happening in the
Life Communities?”. Church members helped with
editing and illustrations to make this possible. I appreci-
ate all of you for supporting the Life Communities in
many ways. I made the booklet to share these testimonies
occurring through AUMC’s Life Community program and
hope for your continued support.
I hope that you enjoy reading the book and pray for
each Life Community. If you haven’t received the booklet,
please let Pastor Peter or the church office know. We will
get you a copy of the book. Mahalo!
