East Worthing Parish Newsletter the Roman Catholic communities of Holy Family, Lancing & St Charles, Worthing part of the Arundel & Brighton Diocesan Trust, a Registered Charity No. 252878 17th July 2016 : 16th Sunday Year C Volume 09 Issue 34 Choosing the better part . . . . . Dont just stand there gawping, were told as children,” …. do something!we have grown up knowing that we all must pull our weight, and so when the overworked Martha complains to Jesus that her sister Mary has not helped with the meal, we get understandably hot under the collar when Jesus condones Marys choice to sit at his feet in conversation. There is of cause a big danger in the story of Martha and Mary. The danger is that we feel the need to side with one sister, thereby judging the other wrong. In truth, both sisters have something to teach us. Martha we are told, was concerned with many things, but were led to believe that all of them were finite and transitory. If we took time to make a list of the concerns in our own lives we might find that we have a lot of Martha in us. We worry about work, we worry about money and we worry about how we are going to fit our chores in. If we look back at our anxieties of last year, or last month, or even last week, we might be forced to admit that most of those worries had no lasting significance, yet they still managed to dominate our lives and rob us of what was important. Mary on the other hand was only concerned with one thing, the Kingdom of God finite, ultimate and lasting. It is important to note that Jesus was not reproaching Martha, after all without Martha there would have been no meal on the table that night. Without the Marthas of the world nothing would get done. On the other hand, it doesnt matter how hard we work, without God at the centre of our lives, our actions are hollow. Mary chose the better part’, but we all need a little of Martha too. Question of the week - Beginning this week, how can I schedule my daily sit-and-listentime and my go-and-do-time,so that my participation in the Year of Mercy is both contemplative and active? Choosing the better part . . . . . “Don’t just stand there gawping,” we’re told as children,” …. do something!” we have grown up knowing that we all must pull our weight, and so when the overworked Martha complains to Jesus that her sister Mary has not helped with the meal, we get understandably hot under the collar when Jesus condones Mary’s choice to sit at his feet in conversation. There is of cause a big danger in the story of Martha and Mary. The danger is that we feel the need to side with one sister, thereby judging the other wrong. In truth, both sisters have something to teach us.

Martha we are told, was concerned with many things, but we’re led to believe that all of them were finite and transitory. If we took time to

make a list of the concerns in our own lives we might find that we have a lot of Martha in us. We worry about work, we worry about money and we worry about how we are going to fit our chores in. If we look back at our anxieties of last year, or last month, or even last week, we might be forced to admit that most of those worries had no lasting significance, yet they still managed to dominate our lives and rob us of what was important. Mary on the other hand was only concerned with one thing, … the Kingdom of God … finite, ultimate and lasting. It is important to note that Jesus was not reproaching Martha, after all without Martha there would have been no meal on the table that night. Without the Marthas of the world nothing would get done. On the other hand, it doesn’t matter how hard we work, without God at the centre of our lives, our actions are hollow. Mary chose ‘the better part’, but we all need a little of Martha too. Question of the week -

Beginning this week, how can I schedule my daily ‘sit-and-listen’ time and my ‘go-and-do-time,’ so that my participation in the Year of Mercy is both contemplative and active?

Newsletter Editorial : Items for possible inclusion in the Parish Newsletter (if there is room) need to be received (in writing please) at the Parish Office by midday on Wednesday.

General Parish Information . . . . . Parishioner Registration : Every household within the Parish is requested to complete a ‘Parishioner Registration/Census’ form so that our Parish records may be kept up to date. These forms can be found in the church narthex and should be completed fully before being returned to the Parish Office. Should you move address within the Parish at any time please complete a new form and write ‘AMENDMENT’ across the top of the form. Thank you.

Hospital : Parishioners are advised that our local General Hospital (Worthing) in Lyndhurst Road does not give the names of inpatients to the Chaplaincy Department. This means that should you find yourself admitted as an emergency case to the hospital you will need to inform the staff that you wish the Roman Catholic Chaplaincy to be informed, either yourself or through a relative. If you are going into hospital as a ‘planned admission’ you are strongly encouraged to contact the Parish Priest well beforehand so that, if appropriate, the Sacrament of the Sick can be celebrated beforehand.

Infant Baptism : Infant Baptisms are intended for the children of practising parishioners only and are celebrated on five occasions during the year after parents and godparents have completed a course of preparation. There can be no celebration without this important course. The dates of the courses for the current year can be found in the application form in the church narthex (bright green). Baptisms do not take place during the seasons of Advent or Lent.

Sacramental Preparation : Notice of the availability of application forms for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist will be made in the Parish Newsletter between the school Summer Half Term and 31st August each year. Possible candidates for Confirmation should respond to the announcements made in the Parish Newsletter during the Autumn school term. Parishioners are advised that it is very difficult to imagine that any family/individual who is not regularly practising their faith as a member of our community could possibly be ready to celebrate a Sacrament of the Church.

Marriage Preparation : Marriages are celebrated by appointment with the Parish Priest. It should be remembered that in England and Wales six months minimum notice is required before a marriage may take place; this is a requirement of the Church for all marriages that involve a Roman Catholic (even if they are not taking place in the Catholic Church). It is also necessary that one of the parties must have a meaningful connection with the Parish. Marriages do not take place during the seasons of Advent or Lent.

Church Mouse (cub reporter). . . The musings of one of God’s smallest creatures on events in and around the Parish over the past seven days . . . .

Once again a busy week around the Presbytery . . . .

This week has involved a lot of school related meetings for Fr D in his role as a governor of St Peter’s Catholic Primary School.

On Monday he was at a meeting in Arundel along with other priests from the Worthing and Cathedral Deaneries to discuss the admissions policies of all of our Catholic Schools in the area. Over recent years there have been a number of changes in legislation regarding the admissions policies of all schools in the country. The Catholic Church was given control of the admissions policies of it’s own schools in the 1945 Education Act on the basis that it built it’s schools for the education of it’s own children first and foremost. In the past three or so years humanists and the like have tried to challenge this right and effectively to do away with Catholic education by making a series of judicial appeals, mostly concerning admissions policies. The purpose of the priest’s meeting was to bring them up to date with some methods to avoid giving the opportunity for these appeals.

On Tuesday the final Governors Meeting for the academic year took place at St Peter’s School and Fr D was able to bring the governors up to date with the meeting he’d attended the day before. Fr D was quite happy that the admissions policy of St Peter’s was ‘water-tight’ and would not be capable of challenge provided that it was adhered to. The principle that runs through it is that ‘Baptised, Practicing Roman Catholic children’ are to be put at the top of the list of those wishing to enter the school. The governors of the school are of the opinion that this is the best way in which to serve the local Catholic communities that use the school.

On Thursday afternoon Fr D was over at the St Philip Howard Catholic Secondary School in Barnham for a discussion about the formation of a Multi Academy Trust in the Worthing and Cathedral Deaneries. Parishioners will have, no doubt, heard of the governments wish that all schools in the country should eventually become ‘academies.’ The Diocese of Arundel and Brighton has decided that if/when our schools become academies they will do it as groups of schools. The deaneries within the diocese have been paired together and the purpose of Thursday’s meeting was to look at how their schools might move forward to become one of these Multi-Academy Trusts. In the near future this process will start, initially with St Philip Howard and one of our Primary Schools . . . . . .

Mass may be offered for both the living and the dead and also for most other intentions. We do our best to try and accommodate specific dates but this can be especially difficult on weekends and at less than three months notice.

‘Mass Intentions’ are published in the Parish Newsletter on the weekend before they are celebrated although sometimes a Requiem Mass will ‘bump’ an intention to a later date.

Who was St Mary Magdalene? . . . . . 22nd July

Poor old Mary Magda-lene, often dubbed as a prostitute and a sinner, but who was she in reality?

Mary Magdalene is mentioned in each of the four gospels in the New Testament, but nowhere, not once, does it mention that she was a prostitute or a sinner.

At some point Mary Magdalene became

confused with two other women in the Bible: Mary, the sister of Martha and the unnamed sinner from Luke’s Gospel (7:36-50).

In 1969 the Catholic Church declared that Mary Magdalene was not the penitent sinner of Luke’s Gospel but the reputation still lingers on.

This year Pope Francis has decreed that her memoria should be raised to the level of a

feast in the calendar of the Church.

Parish Mass of the Sick 2016 . . . . . P A G E 6

The Anointing of the Sick

The name Jesus means “God saves.” The name emphasizes that Jesus is the one who has come to save all. Christ means “anointed.” The name shows that God the Father has given Jesus a mission and endowed him with power to save and the power to heal. Jesus’ whole life was aimed at saving people. His words and actions are the foundation of the saving grace we now receive in the sacraments.

The sacrament that helps unite those who are suffering with Jesus’ saving and healing power is the Anointing of the Sick. Through this sacrament people receive forgiveness for their sins and comfort in their suffering; they are restored in spirit; and sometimes they even experience the return of physical health. Suffering is a part of life, but Jesus unites our suffering with his passion and death so that through our suffering we can participate in his saving and healing work. The sacrament also reminds us that God wants to give comfort to the suffering and wants us to relieve suffering where we can.

In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, the priest anoints the seriously ill, injured, or the elderly with the oil of the sick. The oil of the sick is a special oil used for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. It is blessed by Bishop Richard at the Chrism Mass during Holy Week.

In addition to anointing, the person is often offered Holy Communion. If a person is dying, the Communion is called viaticum (on the way with you). For a dying person, the sacrament is preparation for passing over to eternal life.

Anointing sometimes occurs in a church and is given to the sick or elderly in a community setting. It often takes place in homes, nursing homes, and hospitals. For example, a person who is going to have surgery may be anointed. The sacrament may be received more than once, such as when a sick person’s condition worsens greatly.

In the rite, the priest anoints the sick person on the forehead, saying, “Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” He also anoints the sick person on the hands, saying, “May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up. Amen.” The “raising” refers to spiritual healing, as well as any physical healing that may take place.

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, once referred to as Extreme Unction and ministered only to those in danger of death, is a prayer of healing and may be celebrated both individually and communally.

Our Parish Celebration 2016 - 3rd September, 13.00

As usual we will be holding a communal celebration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick during a special Mass on Saturday 3rd September in the Holy Family Church. ALL those parishioners who are housebound, resident in nursing or care homes and those who are suffering through advanced age are invited to attend this Mass and, if appropriate, to receive this sacrament of God’s healing during this Mass. The celebration of Mass will be followed by a tea in the Holy Family Parish Centre. If you intend to be present at this Mass please make sure that your name is added to the list on the narthex notice board so that we can plan the seating for the service.

THANK YOU TO OUR PARISH SINGERS & MUSICIANS - This weekend is the last weekend when our singers and musicians will be leading us in our liturgies as they take a well-earned summer break. We thank them for all that they do to enhance our liturgies and the tremendous efforts that they put in. We will re-commence singing at our liturgies after the summer on the weekend of 3/4 September. School Summer Holidays - At the end of this week our various schools will be breaking-up for their summer holidays after a very long summer term. We hope and pray that children and students will enjoy their break, making good use of the time that they have to recharge their batteries before starting once more in September. We take the opportunity to thank all the teachers and teaching assistants who work so hard, often in very difficult circumstances, to educate our younger members of the community. Please remember to pray for those who are either leaving secondary school for the world of work or those who leave behind their Primary School for the much bigger Secondary! WELCOME - This weekend we are very pleased to welcome amongst us once more Fr Tony Lovegrove who has kindly agreed to celebrate our weekend Masses whilst Fr Daryl is away in Lourdes acting as a chaplain to a Hosanna House Group of special needs adults. We are very pleased to see him again!

DEACONS’ THOUGHTS . . . .

An interesting gospel today; Jesus visiting Martha and Mary. Martha was busy serving her guests whilst Mary just sat and listened to Jesus speaking, doing none of the work. Jesus tells Martha that Mary has chosen the better part. Perhaps this seems an unrealistic comment from Jesus; work needs to be done!

From our newsletters it is obvious that we always need willing help at church; helping at the summer Fayre, or at Mass, fully taking part by becoming a Reader, or a ‘Welcomer’ (as you should have read about, with the holiday season upon us we do have visitors that need to feel welcomed here), or maybe even serving at the altar; adults and younger people are welcome to join us. Mass doesn’t just happen, nor does the cup of coffee that you may have with your friends afterwards. People do need to take on Martha’s role.

But Jesus is saying that listening to him, is more important. We need to think on this and relate it to ourselves, today. Jesus is saying that at that moment the most important thing to be doing is taking the opportunity to absorb the teachings of God. There will always be work to do, but take that time to really focus on Christ. For us, this means making the most out of our hour in church; listen to the readings, learn from the homily, and act upon it. Read the newsletter and talk to friends after Mass, not during, and let your conscience guide you to becoming an active parishioner. I am sure Mary didn’t always sit and let her sister do all the work!

RECONCILIATION & EUCHARIST PROGRAMMES 2016/7

Applications Forms are now available for the parents of children in Year Three at Primary School (or above). The applications can be obtained from the sacristy after our weekend Masses.

Only the parents of potential candidates may collect the application (not grandparents, friends etc.)

The prospective candidate should already be a regular member of our worshipping community on Sundays and Holy Days (if not the application will be rejected this year and delayed until such time as this situation is resolved - Year Three at School is merely the first opportunity for children to celebrate these great sacraments).

Along with the application a passport-sized photograph of the child is required with their name written on the reverse.

ALL applications must be returned to the Parish Office by 31st August.

ONGOING SAFEGUARDING TRAINING FOR PARISHIONERS WITH ROLES IN THE PARISH

A further session of ongoing training for those in the Worthing Deanery has been arranged for Saturday 17th September (10-12), at St Michael’s, Hayling Rise, Worthing. Bishop Richard would like all those parishioners who have had a CRB/DBS check to have attended this short session (another session will be repeated in March 2017). We need to send the names of anyone who wishes to attend into the Safeguarding Office by the beginning of September at the latest for catering and hand out purposes. This training is for everyone who have a role which requires a DBS check within the parish and who working with vulnerable groups (children and adults at risk). This basic training is for those who have not already attended the previous session held at English Martyrs, Goring in January (or Cathedral Deanery in October last year).
