Thanksgiving and Gratitude in Hard Times By DARLENE LANCER, JD, MFT
W ith Thanksgiving approaching, many Americans struggling with health, financial, and emotional problems find it challeng‐ing to feel grateful. Some people have a habit of looking at the negative. That can be because our brains are predisposed
to solve problems, and we take what makes us comfortable for granted. RELIGION All world religions stress the importance of gratitude. Moreover, religious traditions suggest that you should be grateful notwith‐standing your current problems and circumstances – not to deny them, but in addition to and in spite of them. To feel gratitude only when you feel good is considered narrow‐minded. In the Bible, Paul teaches, “In everything give thanks.” The purpose of prayer is to open people to the presence of God. When it’s heartfelt, it is life‐altering. Prayers of gratitude affirm God’s presence in everything and make our actions infinitely more effective. WH BE GRATEFUL? Prophets and monks know that gratitude brings you closer to God. Even if you’re not religious, gratitude enables you to see your life in a larger context beyond your immediate troubles. It counteracts an ego‐centered contraction and preoccupation with losses, fears, and wants. Being grateful only when good things happen reinforces your ego’s demand that good things happen, setting up greater disappointment when things don’t turn out as you desire. Cultivating an attitude of acceptance enables you to feel grateful even when you’re in pain. It’s helpful to view all experience is an opportunity to grow and learn. DEVELOPING AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE Gratefulness comes more easily to some than others. When you’re discouraged or weighed down with negative thoughts, there are several things you can do to develop an “attitude of gratitude:”
1. There’s wisdom in the phrase “count your blessings.” Listing the things for which you’re grateful can generate feelings of
appreciation and gratitude. It’s often suggested to write them down daily. You can start with the fact that you have a brain, can write, and can read. Add small things, for example, seeing a child smile, receiving affection from a pet or greetings from a co‐worker, or accomplishing a task, such as doing laundry or taking a walk. After several days, you’ll begin to look for things to add to your list and find that your mood significantly improves – faster than taking an anti‐depressant.
2. Read your list to someone. Sharing your grateful feelings doubles the effect. Arrange to regularly share your gratitude lists
and give thanks together. Praying together heightens your sense of connection and well‐being.
3. Express thanks daily. Doing so out loud has more power. In the morning and evening, and before meals, recite prayers of
gratitude, or just say thank you to your higher power.
4. Thank others. Throughout the day, thank others for their help — particularly people you don’t ordinarily thank, such as
cashiers. This is a recognition that you depend upon many people in order to survive and acknowledges your interdependent existence. The same is implicit in saying grace for the labor that goes into food on your table.
5. Compliment people. Giving compliments shows appreciation and lifts others’ mood as well as yours.
6. Write notes. Put them on your refrigerator, mirrors, and computer to remind you to be thankful.
7. Think about people you appreciate. The act of visualizing them with positive feelings opens your heart to gratitude.
8. Write people unexpected thank‐you notes. Writing your appreciation prompts loving feelings that engender gratitude.
9. Do small acts of generosity. Give someone your place in line, help someone pay for a purchase, or bring food to a neighbor.
Thank yourself at the end of the day for things you did well. List at least three things. They may be small and include the above acts of gratitude. In time, you’ll notice a change in your mood until your “cup runneth over” – or, at least appear half full rather than half empty.

Jason Torba, after each Mass today the Friends of Missionary of the Poor are at each door collecting your free will donations to help the victims of the Typhoon Haiyan that hit Philippins couple of weeks ago killing thousands and displaced over 600,000. Following is a letter from Fr. Rowell Gumalay, the Missionary of the Poor working in Philippines with a plea for help. They need funds immediately to accommodate the families that are seeking shelter with them. ALL funds collected during our appeal today will go directly to the Missionaries of the Poor with no overhead expenses, therefore you can be sure that every dollar that you donate will be entirely used to help the vic‐tims. We’ve all been deeply affected by the loss of lives and the plight of the survivors. While praying, offering masses about this for many days now, I saw the many who have become homeless, separated from their love ones in Leyte. Among them, the elderly, disabled and children who are most helpless, along with mothers who are nursing young ones who will need shelter – either for a while or even perma‐nently. Providentially we’ve just been given a very large building in Cebu which is meant to be a home for elderly and disabled. I believe this would be a good way to respond to the crisis. I believe there will be very few, if any at all, organization that can offer this sort of assistance. See attached pictures. We need your help and support so as to accommodate them in our home. We urgently in need of help to get things locally as soon as possible like bedding, blankets, food, sanitary, medicines, kitchen wares, furnishing ma‐terials, and installation of water system. YOU’RE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE KOLBE HOUSE ADVENT EMAIL RETREAT Kolbe House, the Jail Ministry of Archdiocese of Chicago, invites you to participate in our annual Advent email retreat that starts on December 2, 2013. Every Monday during Ad‐vent you will receive an email from us that contains a short personal experience and scriptural reflection written by one of our Kolbe House staff or volunteers. This reflec‐tion will also include a simple prayer and sug‐gested actions for the week. Be watchful! Pay Atten‐tion! Be aware of what is happening around you! All of these words are especially important to those who are incarcer‐ated. Being conscious of your surroundings and of who is around you become second nature to a person in jail. These words also highlight the theme that runs throughout the Advent Scriptures. We can‐not let sleep overcome us. We need to be awake to what is happening around us, in our lives, and in the lives of others. Advent awakens us to the needs of others. This season helps us to become socially preoccupied about those who live in the quiet shadows of our streets as well as those who are constantly being watched in jail by correctional officers and even by one another. Those incarcerated are like us‐‐ made in the image and likeness of God. Pope Francis speaks with simple direct words. He reminds us of that by drawing our attention to the poor, the immigrant, to those who live on fringe of society. His dramatic action of washing the feet of prisoners takes on fresh meaning of Gospel service. In this retreat you will be guided by the Word of God and reflect on the words of Pope Francis as we walk through these Advent days. At Christmas Jesus becomes one of us in all ways but sin. In Advent we become more conscious of the ways that we are called to become like Jesus. These are life giving days that are worth taking time to ponder, to be watchful, to be more aware of what is happening around us. Vatican Survey: Pastoral Challenges to the Family in the Context of Evangelization
Pope Francis has called for an Extraordinary Synod to ad‐dress the topic, Pastoral Challenges to the Family in the Context of Evangelization that will take place in Rome in October of 2014. The Holy See has asked bishops to share information about the topic as widely as possible and to provide a way for those Catholics who wish to contribute their comments and input to do so. The instructions and the survey can be found on the Chi‐cago Archdiocesan website, www.archchicago.org/vatican‐survey/. All responses received in the Archdiocese of Chicago will be sent to the United States Conference of Catholic Bish‐ops in Washington, DC, who will pass on all collected re‐sponse from dioceses throughout the country to the Sec‐retary General of the Synod of Bishops in Rome.

THANKSGIVING czyli ŚWIĘTO DZIĘKCZYNIENIA W najbliszy czwartek, 28 listopada obchodzimy Święto Dziękczynienia. Jego tradycja sięga roku 1621. Osadnicy z Europy podziękowali wtedy Bogu za przetrwanie pierwszej zimy na amerykańskiej ziemi. Wraz z pomagającymi im Indianami uczcili także swoje pierwsze obfite zbiory. Choć święto obchodzone każdego roku w czwarty czwartek listopada nie ma charakteru religijnego, w kościołach w całych Stanach odprawiane są wtedy nabożeństwa dziękczynne za otrzymane łaski. Centralnym wydarzeniem tego święta jest uroczysty obiad w gronie rodziny i przyjaciół. Tego dnia Amerykanie przyjeżdżają do rodzinnych domów z najdalszych zakątków kraju, często pokonując setki mil. Wiele parafii w tych dniach organizuje specjalne obiady dla biednych i bezdomnych.
Najczęściej zadawane pytanie w tym czasie brzmi: „Za co najbardziej jesteś wdzięczny w mijającym roku?”. Odpowiedziami przez cały listo‐pad można się dzielić na Facebooku, gdzie specjalnie w tym celu zos‐tało założone konto. Pośród odpowiedzi można tam znaleźć: „Za żonę”, „za męża”, „za przyjaciół”, „za restaurację otwartą blisko domu”, ale też, „że telewizja nie emituje już więcej reklam wyborczych”. Więk‐szość potraw podawanych podczas obiadu jest przyrządzana z tego samego rodzaju produktów, które pierwsi pielgrzymi otrzymali przed 400 laty od Indian. Najważniejszym daniem na stole jest pieczony indyk z nadzieniem i sosem żurawinowym. Przecietnie w Święto Dziękczynienia, w Stanach Zjednoczonych zjedada sie ok. 46 mln indyków.

UROCZYSTOSC CHRYSTUSA KROLA Kościół katolicki obchodzi dzisiaj uroczystość Chrystusa Króla Wszechświata, panującego w niebie i na ziemi. Ostatnia niedziela przed Adwentem ‐ początkiem nowego roku liturgicznego ‐ stanowi podkreślenie faktu panowania zmartwychwstałego Chrystusa.
Uroczystość Chrystusa Króla w swojej wymowie wskazuje na cel ostateczny życia człowieka, czyli na zjednoczenie z Bogiem i oddanie się pod panowanie Jego miłości w Królestwie Bożym. Królowanie Chrystusa wyraża się w zbawieniu człowieka. Przez
swoją śmierć na krzyżu dał On dowód miłości względem wszystkich ludzi i odpuszczając nasze grzechy, pojednał nas z Ojcem oraz uczynił ludem wybranym, czyli królestwem i kapłanami Boga samego. W ikonografii Chrystus Król już od starożytności przedstawiony jest jako Pantokrator, czyli Wszechwładca, zasiadający na tronie, mający ziemię za podnóżek lub trzymający glob ziemski w dłoni. Tak przedstawiają Jezusa dawne ikony i mozaiki. Tak też wielokrotnie ukazuje Go Apokalipsa ‐ jako zasiadającego na tronie, któremu całe stworzenie oddaje cześć. Równocześnie Ewangelie ukazują inny wymiar królowania Chrystusa. Ubiczowany, ukoronowany cierniami Jezus odpowiada na pytanie Poncjusza Piłata: „Tak, jestem
Królem. Królestwo moje nie jest z tego świata” (por. J 18, 33‐40). Na krzyżu Chrystusa widniał napis: „Jezus Nazarejczyk Król Żydowski” (J, 19,19), a ukrzyżowany z Nim łotr prosił tuż przed śmiercią: „Jezu, wspomnij na mnie, gdy będziesz w swoim królestwie” (Łk 23,42). Ten ewangeliczny przekaz ukazuje, że w najgłębszym chrześcijańskim sensie panować to znaczy służyć, a nawet oddać życie za innych.
Uroczystość Chrystusa Króla wprowadził do kalendarza liturgicznego papież Pius XI encykliką "Quas Primas" z 11 grudnia 1925 r. na zakończenie roku jubileuszowego. Papieska encyklika ustanawiająca tę uroczystość jako przeciwstawienie się silnym tendencjom ateistycznym i laickim, które w tym czasie były bardzo popularne, wskazywała na Chrystusa jako Króla mającego władzę nad człowiekiem i całym światem. Papież nakazał wtedy, aby we wszystkich kościołach tego dnia po głównym nabożeństwie przed wystawionym Najświętszym Sakramentem odmówić Litanię do Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa oraz akt poświęcenia rodzaju ludzkiego Najświętszemu Sercu. Początkowo uroczystość obchodzono w ostatnią niedzielę października. Po reformie liturgicznej w 1969 r. uroczystość została przeniesiona na ostatnią niedzielę roku kościelnego. Umieszczenie tej uroczystości na końcu kalendarza wiąże się z biblijnym rozumieniem czasu i odzwierciedla zarazem sens roku liturgicznego, który jakby odtwarza najważniejsze zdarzenia w dziejach zbawienia.

Podczas modlitw czy ofiarujac msze św. od kilku już dni widziałem wielu którzy w ciągu zaledwie kilku chwil stali sie bezdomni, oddzieleni od swoich najbliższych w Layte. Posród nich są osoby starsze, niepełnosprawne, dzieci które są bezbronne i najbardziej zagubione, widzimy matki karmiące dzieci – oni wszyscy stracili wszystko i potrzebuja schronienia – niektórzy tymczasowo inni na stałe. Bracia Misjonarze Ubogich otrzymali duży budynek, który znajduje sie w Cebu na Filipinach I zostanie przeznaczony dla ludzi starszych i kalekich poszkodowanych podczas huraganu. Drodzy Bracia i Siostry potrzebujemy Waszej pomocy i wsparcia abyśmy mogli zapewnić dom i schronienie wielu osobom. Pilnie potrzebujemy zakupić łóżka, koce, jedzenie, środki czystości, lekarstwa, urzadzić kuchnię oraz doprowadzić wodę . Z góry dziękujemy za wasze wsparcie finansowe i modlitewne. Dziecięcy Zespół „Kropeczki” działa przy parafii św. Ferdynanda w Chicago. Założony został w grudniu 1998 roku przez s. Katarzynę Zaremba – Misjonarkę Chrystusa Króla dla Polonii Zagranicznej. Na dzień dzisiejszy za zespół odpowiedzialna jest s.Anna Strycharz – także Misjonarka Chrystusa Króla. Ze względu na ograniczenie wiekowe od 3 do 7 lat skład ciągle się zmienia. Choć sam zespół ma już swoją piętnastoletnią historię i różne sukcesy na swoim koncie, to pracę wciąż zaczynamy od nowa.Obecnie w zespole śpiewa 22 dzieci. Z całego serca pragniemy zaprosić wszystkie osoby, które związane są i były z naszym zespołem w ciągu ostatnich piętnastu lat. Liczymy zwłaszcza na najstarsze KROPECZKI!!!! Irony is a great thing. It gives us pause. It makes us think. It is of‐ten bittersweet. The short story writer O. Henry knew something about irony when he penned “The Gift of the Magi,” a story about a man who sells his watch to buy hair combs for his wife and the wife who sells her hair to buy a watch chain for her husband. The French philosopher Voltaire knew something about irony: “It is forbidden to kill; therefore all murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets.” Unaware at the time, President Lincoln knew something about irony: “The ballot is stronger than the bullet.” Heck, the country singer Mac Davis knew something about irony, too: “Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble, when you’re perfect in every way.” But when it comes to irony that really gives us pause, that makes us think, and that is bittersweet, we don’t have to look any further today than the Gospel reading from Luke on this Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. The whole scene is ironic, of course, and perhaps Luke’s fellow Evangelists Matthew, Mark and John paint the irony best. Mark writes of the soldiers’ mockery of Jesus, King of the Jews: “They stripped off his clothes and threw a scarlet military cloak about him. Weaving a crown of thorns, they placed it on his head, and a reed in his right hand.” Matthew elaborates: “They began to sa‐lute him with, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ and kept striking his head with a reed and spitting upon him. They knelt before him in hom‐
age.” John writes of Pilate’s attempt to reason with Jesus. “Do you not know that I have power to release you and I have power to crucify you,” Pilate inquires, prompting Christ’s response: “You would have no power over me if it had not been given to you from above…” Though Pilate then tries to release Jesus, the crowd proves too much for him, so he presents Jesus to the people, say‐ing, “Behold your king!” They respond in turn, “We have no king but Caesar!” Luke embraces the irony of it all as well, but most specifically by focusing on Christ’s innocence. While Matthew and Mark both quote the centurion as acknowledging upon Christ’s death that Jesus was the Son of God, Luke alone quotes him as assessing our Lord’s guiltlessness: “This man was innocent beyond doubt.” And Luke alone writes of the good thief who rebukes his fellow crimi‐nal as they both hang on crosses next to Jesus: “Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corre‐sponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal.” The scarlet cloak, the crown of thorns, the false homage. And Luke’s emphasis on the innocence of the God/Man who forgives his persecutors as he breathes his last for not knowing what they are doing. This is the ultimate irony of the cosmos: everyone hav‐ing their sport with Jesus that day thinks they are killing a king in jest even as they are killing the very King of the Universe. Yeah.

For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church. Following registration, the sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Saturday each month at 6:00PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the 12:30PM Mass. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in Polish on the first Saturday of the month at 6:00PM and on the third Sunday of the month at the 3:00PM Mass.
