OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST KING OF THE UNIVERSE

NOVEMBER 22, 2020

First Reading: Ezekiel 34:11-12, 15-17 This passage beautifully describes how the Lord God, as shepherd, will tend his flock. He will rescue those who are lost, bring back those who stray, heal the sick, and “pasture” all.

Second Reading: 1 Cor. 15:20-26, 28 Paul once again stresses the significance of Christ’s resurrection in the total divine plan, emphasizing that Christ’s rising means that those who believe in him will also rise after death. Christianity, he argues, is meaningless if it concerns only this life on earth. In the end, even death will be destroyed, and “God will be all in all.”

Gospel: Matthew 25:31-46 With words both poetic and vivid, Jesus tells the disciples that since he is present in all people, whatever they do to “one of my least brothers” they do to him; and whatever they fail to do to his “least,” they fail to do to him.

FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING Today's celebration of the Solemnity of Jesus Christ The King marks the last Sunday of the church's liturgical year. Today, in churches throughout the world, Catholics will be singing the words, "To Jesus Christ our Sovereign King who is the world's salvation, all praise and homage do we bring and thanks and adoration. Christ Jesus Victor! Christ Jesus Ruler! Christ Jesus Lord and Redeemer!" This song, which traces its roots back to the late nineteenth century, focuses our attention on the triumphant Christ who, having conquered humankind's greatest enemies, sin & death, is now seen as one who sits on his glorious throne at the right hand of the Father. In time, our King will bring his kingdom to completion when he comes in his glory to sit in judgment over everyone who has ever lived. He will then separate them into two groups, those who are saved and those who are damned. The righteous, represented by the sheep, he will bring into his eternal kingdom. The damned, represented by the goats, he will send off to eternal punishment This ultimate "separation parable" which is found in Matthew's account of the final judgment, is a powerful reminder of God's justice and the criteria he follows when meting it out. The gospel message is a sobering reminder that, in the end, God does not treat everyone the same. Our life-long thoughts, words and deeds make all the different in the world as to our final destination. On judgment day, our lives will be laid open like a book and will either speak for us or against us. We are writing that book right now. We are filling in the pages every time we decide to be generous or selfish. We render judgment on ourselves every time we do the right thing or choose to do the lazy or sinful thing. With Christ, the ultimate criterion for judgment will be love, active love, overflowing into simple deeds of goodness and charity. The small, routine and seemingly insignificant deeds of our lives have ramifications of eternal proportions for the believer and upon these

shall we each be separated, like wheat from chaff, sheep from goats, the righteous from the accursed, the saved from the damned. During the upcoming season of Advent, the church calls us to experience devout and joyful expectation as we heed the words of the Baptist and “prepare the way of the Lord.” An important part of our spiritual preparation should most definitely be in the areas of penance and acts of charity. Indeed, it seems that Christ really notices all those little things we either make time for or neglect to get around to. Clothing donations for the homeless; SVDP donations for the less fortunate; providing turkey & food donations at Thanksgiving; providing children's' clothing & diapers for unwed mothers; car rides for elderly people; bringing Holy Communion to homebound neighbors; teaching religion to our school-age children, going to a wake or funeral; making time for a thoughtful call or letter; praying for the needs of others....I was hungry, I was thirsty, I was a stranger, I was naked, I was ill, I was in prison.........Whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.

MAY GOD GRANT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY A BLESSED THANKSGIVING.

The Bible urges us to live a life of THANKSGIVING each day. Being thankful to God for all of His blessings is truly a mark

of the Christian life

Please join your parish family for our annual Thanksgiving Service on Monday

evening, November 23rd at 7 PM.

THANKSGIVING DAY PRAYER O God, when I have food, help me to remember the hungry; When I have work, help me to remember the jobless; When I have a home, help me to remember those who have no home at all; When I am without pain, help me to remember those who suffer, And remembering, help me to destroy my complacency; bestir my compassion, and be concerned enough to help; By word and deed, those who cry out for what we take for granted. Amen. — Samuel F. Pugh ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT

LIKE CHRISTMAS – BUT IS IT? We know that we have all been through a lot this year and it’s not yet over. How about this Christmas, we Catholics and, hopefully all Christians, all try our best to lift each other’s spirits by focusing more closely on the religious meaning of this very holy, “most wonderful time of the year”? I invite everyone to pass the word to family and friends to make every effort to display religious images of the season both indoors and outdoors……..especially OUTDOORS. As we drive through our local neighborhoods may we all enjoy seeing a multitude of lighted Nativity scenes, angels, shining stars, wisemen with camels, and let us all exchange Blessed/Merry Christmas cards and messages and any other ways you can think of to try and focus on the BIRTH OF CHRIST, the NATIVITY OF THE LORD. So, don’t let the Covid Grinch deny us our Christmas joy this year. Light up the house and property. Send out those Christmas cards like you always do and, please, please wish everyone you see a Blessed or Joyous or Merry or Happy Christmas.
