A LETTER FROM OUR PARISH ADMINISTRATOR
A Thanksgiving Weekend Message
Thanksgiving Day is a day of tradition - stuffed turkey, family get togethers and renewing friendships. It is a day when communities gather together in prayer to express their sentiments for being thankful.
Although grateful for all the blessings that come to us through family and friends - and some-times even a stranger - we know that it is God who ultimately is the giver of all good gifts. He is the source of all goodness. To be grateful to Him is the best gift we can receive.
In marking this holiday, I thank God for the privilege He has given me to live and serve amount you as a priest and for the generosity of those who serve in His name in our parish and school. I am deeply grateful to all of you - the men and women, boys and girls of St. Mary’s for your commitment in faith to God and your love for our parish and school. Truly, for the generous spirit of so many fine people in our parish family, I am profoundly grateful!
What I like about Thanksgiving is what this unique time of the year calls us to: gratitude. Most people I talk to seem to appreciate this holiday over Christmas in large part because of the cultural, commercial chaos that has become associated with Christmas. But sometimes even Thanksgiving focuses too much on the turkey and the trimmings, leaving this too strictly a culinary exercise. Gratitude does not just happen because of a piece of cooked poultry, but more importantly it is about finding that internal space which might actually lead me and all of us to a better world. Not everybody reading this article or coming to St. Mary’s this weekend was with family or sitting at a table. Some of our parishioners found themselves alone, mourn-ing this as the first ‘holiday’ without someone. For some, family may not be a reality. But Thanksgiving is important. Beyond a big fancy meal, Thanksgiving calls us to be aware of this God of ours whose only desire is to nourish and sustain us. We see a lot of tough things happening in the world today. From illness to violence to sheer chaos, we face the darkness. For many, this Thanksgiving may seem like an insult to their woundedness. But may our deepest prayer be that God helps us become mindful of who we are, who we are called to be, and what we are capable of bringing to the ‘table’ of the world.
Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday weekend and remembering you in my Masses and prayers each day.
Have a blessed week.
Father Aidan O’Boyle

THANK YOU!!
The me has come to say THANK YOU to all of the Coaches and Athle c Board members who have been commi ed to the student athletes of St. Mary of the Woods. For the
past 11 and a half years, it has been my honor to serve as Athle c Director. It is a job I have come to love and the part I have loved the most is watching your sons and daughters grow up before my eyes. They have turned into young men and women who have gone on to many great things with their lives. Parents should be very proud! I have been in-volved in SMOW Athle cs for almost 30 years and am re ring as Athle c Director on December 31st, 2018. It is me for me to babysit my granddaughter and help my son with the arri-val of another baby. I want to personally thank every coach who volunteered to coach and share their knowledge of the sport with the kids they coached.
The coaches make our Athle c Program what it is today. I also want to thank everyone who served as President of the Athle c Board. They worked very hard (mostly behind the scenes) to make sure every aspect of our program ran smoothly every minute of every day. I want to thank every Athle c Board member who also volunteered and sat in countless mee ngs and did countless things without so much as a pat on the back. I want to thank the Teachers of SMOW for their dedica on and Commitment to teaching your kids every day. I have walked the Halls of SMOW for many years and I am in awe of the teachers. The school secretaries also deserve my thanks for answering my calls, making announce-ments at school and making me a copy or 2 when my printer at home was broken.
Last, but not least, I want to thank the parents for allowing me to be a part of their children’s lives. It was a Great ride!! Everyone along the way has been very suppor ve and it has meant the world to me. THANK YOU!! I also feel very lucky that Harry Comerford will be taking over for me as Athle c Director!! Harry has coached at SMOW for many years and will step right in seamlessly!! His email address is [email protected]. Dan Stapleton will be in charge of schedul-ing anything to do with the gym. His email is [email protected].
I am also re ring from being in charge of the Rectory Calen-dar. Mary Dosek, who has been very helpful in assis ng me, will be the contact person for anything that needs to be put on the Church calendar. Her email is [email protected].
Sincerely, Jon LeBaron SMOW Athle c Director

TRANSFORMATION PARISH LIFE
Gratitude through Giving
St. Sylvester Christmas Baskets
“In our gratitude to God for all that we have, we strive to share with others.”
Our sister parish, St. Sylvester is again asking us to provide Christmas baskets to their neediest families. We do this by providing “baskets” filled with food and gifts for their Christmas celebration. We hope to enable these families to enjoy the Christmas season fully. Sign up in the lobby this weekend and for the next two weekends. Consider teaming up with a neighbor for a larger family. More information such as family member sizes and a list of suggested groceries will be provided. Delivery dates will be Saturday and Sunday, December 8th and 9th, from 9am to 3pm and directions to St. Sylvester are also included. Feel your heart and spirit sing as your act of charity manifests the true meaning of Christmas in the life of a needy family. For more info, call Mary Saffa, 773-775-8532.
The Custom of the Advent Wreath Take a deep breath. Thanksgiving celebrations are over and we have a one week break before December moves in with an abundance of festivities, customs and holiday spirit. A wonderful tradition in many homes is the Advent Wreath. Just a relatively small, not too ornate item, but it incorporates so many features of Advent. The wreath itself – evergreen representing this four week period of renewal. Circular shape – the eternity of God Candles – the light of Christ’s coming into this world Prayer – with focus on Hope, Peace, Joy and Love.
Each candle represents a quality of Advent: Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. In many homes a fifth candle (white) is added in the center of the wreath to announce the Birth of the Baby Jesus. Beginning on the first Sunday of Advent (December 2), one candle is lit and a prayer is offered. Week 2, relight the first candle and now light the second. Again, offer the appropriate prayer. Follow this pro-cedure to Christmas Eve and light the centered white candle to celebrate the Birth of our Savior. Next Sunday, SMOW has scheduled a special event after the 4;30 Mass on Saturday for making Advent Wreaths. See details in the bulletin. We will continue with the weekly candle lighting prayers through Advent. And before Advent begins, you might offer the following prayer to introduce the season. Lord, you call out to us all in this special time of Advent grace, and especially to the downheart-ed, to those who suffer, to those whose spirits are low, to those who feel the weariness of life. You call us to look up, to raise our hearts, to find our hope and salvation in you. Help us to turn to you each day in this precious time of Advent. Show us your love, and renew us in hope. Amen

Father James Martin’s Building a Bridge Over a series of the four Tuesday nights in November in the St. Mary of the Woods Parish Hall at 7:00 pm, parishioner Susan McGowan will facilitate a book discussion on Fr. James Martin’s recent book, Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and the LGBT Community Can Enter into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity.
You may purchase a copy online at Amazon.com ($10.39 + s&h) or from other online book sellers.
Here are a few commentaries on the book:
“I affirm what Martin is doing...he has given his life for the service of the church. The Holy Father appointed him to a commission in Rome. I say to people: Make up your own decision, your own mind about him, by reading exactly what he wrote.”
~Cardinal Blase Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago
“A welcome and much-needed book that will help bishops, priests, pastoral associates, and all church leaders, more compassionately minister to the LGBT community. It will also help LGBT Catholics feel more at home in what is, after all, their church.”

What is the RCIA? The Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) is a gradual process of conversion and initiation into the Cath-olic Christian community, providing individuals an opportunity to respond to His invitation to a new way of life in the Catholic faith. Grounded in a respect for the personal faith journey of each individu-al, the RCIA provides an extended period of prayer, study, and fellowship in which each individual has the opportunity to grow in relationship with God as well as the St. Mary of the Woods parish community.
Who is the RCIA for?
Persons who have never been baptized and wish to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Con-firmation, and Eucharist (Holy Communion) in the Catholic Church.
Persons who were baptized in another Christian denomination and wish to be received into full communion with the Catholic Church by receiving the sacraments of Confirmation and Eu-charist.
Baptized Catholics who have not completed their initiation; by receiving the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist.
How does the RCIA work? In the RCIA individuals reflect and learn about what is means to be a part of the Catholic Christian community – who we are, what we believe, how we celebrate and pray, how we relate with one an-other and with God. Based on the gradual transformation of each individual, the RCIA accompanies and celebrates the journey to faith of each individual. The process begins with a period of inquiry for those who have felt called to consider the Catholic faith. Here you will find an open space to ask questions about what Catholics hold and believe while meeting others striving to live Gospel values. Know that initial inquiry does not necessarily commit you to initiation. Where can I find out more information? We welcome people of all ages into our St. Mary of the Woods faith community. If you would like more information, please e-mail Deacon Chuck at [email protected], or call the rectory.

Pope Francis Support of critical funding for migrants and refugees overseas. The final figures for this life-saving aid have yet to be determined, and Congress has until Decem-ber 7th to pass a final bill. It will help migrants and ref-ugees around the world meet their basic needs, and addresses factors, like violence, hunger, and lack of economic opportunity, that force people to migrate. Your voice makes a difference. Raise it today! ACTION: Visit the USCCBs site https://www.confrontglobalpoverty.org for ways to contact your officials to oppose cuts to foreign aid.
