FATHER MARIO’S NOTE

Today we celebrate the final Sunday in Ordinary Time, and aptly pronounced as a great Feast Day of the Church – the Solemnity of Christ, the King of the Universe. As is stated in the Introductory Rite of today’s Liturgy, “The Lamb who was slain is worthy to receive strength and divinity, wisdom and power and honor: to Him be glory and power forever.” Week by week the Church has been preparing us for the revelation to be made on this last Sunday of the Church year. We hear that Jesus is truly the Chosen One, the Messiah of God, the King of the Jews, and, in the Gospel we hear, ironically, these names on the lips of those who don’t believe in Him – Israel’s rulers, soldiers, and even a criminal dying next to Him. They can only see the scandal of a bloodied figure nailed to a cross. In scorning Him, they are fulfilling Scriptural prophecies. The good thief shows us how we are to accept the salvation He offers – through confessing our sins and calling on the Name of Jesus, seeking His mercy and forgiveness. By His faith He is saved. Jesus ‘remembers’ him, as God always remembers His people. By the Blood of His Cross, Jesus reveals His Kingship – not in saving His life, but in offering it in ransom for ours. He transfers us to “the Kingdom of His beloved Son,” as St Paul states. His Kingdom is the Church, the new Jerusalem and the House of David that we sing of in today’s Psalm. Israel experienced a Covenant where they are made one “bone and flesh” with their king. In the New Covenant of His Blood, Christ becomes one flesh with the people of His Kingdom – the head of His body the Church. We celebrate and renew this Covenant in every Eucharist, giving thanks for our redemption, hoping for the day when we, too, will be with Him in Paradise.

May Jesus our King bless you and yours! Have a great week in the Lord!

In His love,

Fr Mario Joseph Tizziani Pastor

CATHOLIC QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “As generous distributors of God’s manifold grace, put your gifts at the service of one another, each in the measure he has received” (Psalm 90:1).

CATECHISM

Societies of Apostolic Life – “Alongside the different forms of consecrated life are ‘societies of apostolic life whose members without religious vows pursue the particular apostolic purpose of their society, and lead a life as brothers or sisters in common according to a particular manner of life, strive for the perfection of charity though the observance of the constitutions. Among these there are societies in which the members embrace the evangelical counsels’ according to their constitutions” (CCC 930).

LUMEN FIDEI – THE LIGHT OF FAITH POPE FRANCIS

Abraham, Our Father in Faith – “Abraham is asked to entrust himself to God’s Word. Faith understands that something so apparently ephemeral and fleeting as a word, when spoken by the God who is fidelity, becomes absolutely certain and unshakable, guaranteeing the continuity of our journey through history. Faith accepts this word as a solid rock upon which we can build, a straight highway on which we can travel. In the Bible, faith is expressed by the Hebrew word ‘emunah, derived from the verb ‘aman whose root means ‘to uphold.’ The term ‘emunah can signify both God’s fidelity and man’s faith. The man of faith gains strength by putting himself in the hands of the God who is faithful. Playing on this double meaning of the word – also found in the corresponding terms in Greek (pistos) and Latin (fidelis) – St Cyril of Jerusalem praised the dignity of the Christian who receives God’s own name: both are called ‘faithful.’ As St Augustine explains: ‘Man is faithful when he believes in God and his promises; God is faithful when He grants to man what he has promised” (LF 10).

CHILDREN’S ADVENT OFFERING

Once again, this year our school-aged children will be receiving an Advent offering card – either through St. Cecilia School or their CCD class. Throughout the Advent Season, we are challenged to pray for the Lord’s coming, to be examples of His love and virtues to others, and to “prepare the way of the Lord” through our stewardship. As our children fill these cards, quarter by quarter, this is a great opportunity for a time of family Scripture reading, discussion and prayer. The children should bring their completed Advent cards to the Children’s Christmas Mass (5 pm on Christmas Eve) or any of our Christmas Masses throughout the Season where a special basket will be placed before the manger where they will place their offering before the newborn King.

ST NICK IS COMING TO TOWN!!! Save the date – December 10th will be our annual Breakfast with St. Nick. Come enjoy a yummy pancake and eggs breakfast with all the fixins, games, crafts and a visit from St. Nick, 8:30-10:30 am in the Undercroft. Cost is $7 for an adult plate, $5 for a child, family max of $30. Tickets are required and go on sale at school, church and online Thanksgiving weekend. For more information, contact Charlie or Karen Bunton at [email protected] or [email protected]. Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and SCPTO. All proceeds go to the building fund.

AN ALTAR IN YOUR HOME

One doesn’t need to have a chapel in their home in order to have a prayer area. It is a great idea to set aside some area in the house that is always kept clean and clear which becomes an invitation for prayer, reading and reflection. This can become your home altar. Our kids today yearn for silence, but they find very little of it. Provide that environment for them. They will respond to a sacred space with reference if you present it as such. It is important to let your children know that they are welcome to spend time in the prayer place. If you have small children, set out a non-breakable statue, crucifix and a children’s Bible. If your kids are older, leave out a prayer book or a book on the lives of the Saints as well as the Bible and a crucifix. You will find a family altar will allow every member of the family to sit down, take a deep breath and find peace and comfort in the presence of God.

Behold, your King is coming to you, the Holy One, the Savior (From a discourse by St. Andrew of Crete, bishop)

Let us say to Christ: Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord, the King of

Israel. Let us wave before Him like palm branches the words inscribed above Him on the Cross. Let us show Him honor, not with olive branches but with the splendor of merciful deeds to one another. Let us spread the thoughts and desires of our hearts under His feet like garments, so that entering with the whole of His being, He may draw the whole of our being into Himself and place the whole of His in us. Let us say to Zion in the words of the prophet: Have courage, daughter of Zion, do not be afraid. Behold your king comes to you, humble,

and mounted on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.

He is coming who is everywhere present and pervades all things; He is coming to achieve in you His work of universal salvation. He is coming who came to call to repentance not the righteous but sinners, coming to recall those who have strayed into sin. Do not be afraid, then: God is in the midst of you, and you shall not be shaken. Receive Him with open, outstretched hands, for it was on His own hands that He sketched you. Receive Him who laid your foundations on the palms of His hands. Receive Him, for He took upon Himself all that belongs to us except sin, to consume what is ours in what is His. Be glad, city of Zion, our mother, and fear not. Celebrate your feasts. Glorify Him for His mercy, who has come to us in you. Rejoice exceedingly, daughter of Jerusalem, sing and leap for joy. Be enlightened, be enlightened, we cry to you, as holy Isaiah trumpeted, for the light has come to you and the glory of the Lord has risen over you. What kind of light is this? It is that which enlightens every man coming into the world.

It is the light that was in the world from the beginning, through which the world was made, yet the world did not know it. It is that light which came to its own, and its own people did not receive it. And what is this glory of the Lord? Clearly it is the Cross on which Christ was glorified, He, the radiance of the Father’s glory, even as He said when He faced His passion: Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him, and will glorify Him at once.

The glory of which He speaks here is His lifting up on the Cross, for Christ’s glory is His Cross and His exaltation upon it, as He plainly says: When I have been lifted up, I will draw

all men to myself.
