As we look back on the past year, we are excited and challenged by the many dynamic changes happening at Sunbeam:
We moved into a new building at 1100 NW 14th Street after over 80 years at our old location. Our new Emergency Shelter for Seniors is beautiful, functional, and a great safe place for seniors. We held our first annual Shine a Light fundraising gala in April and it was a great success. We received a multi-million dollar federal grant for our Early Head Start Child Care Partnership where we are partnering with 13 child care centers in the most impoverished zip codes of Oklahoma City.We have expanded our outreach in Counseling, Foster Care, Senior Services and at Educare. We have been researching and writing a soon-to-be-published book, with author Bob Burke, highlighting the 109 year history of Sunbeam. We continue to grow both programs and personnel and this year Sunbeam was voted one of the best places to work in Oklahoma City!
Obviously, we are growing and going strong, but none of it would be possible without the support of our community, our donors and our volunteers. Each highlight you see on the pages of this annual report is a snapshot of the people we serve through Early Childhood, Foster Care, Counseling and Senior Services. Each number on a page represents a person or family whose lives are improved because of Sunbeam and you. Each story and photo is confirmation that our work, and your support of Sunbeam Family Services, is making a vital difference, giving help, hope and an opportunity to succeed to people in need.
Thank you for your outstanding support, encouragement, involvement and investment in Sunbeam’s mission. Our past is inspiring, our present is busy, and our future is bright because of you!
Yours in Service,
Jim Priest

For years, our wonderful friends at the Oklahoma City Thunder have taken an interest in Sunbeam programs, including Oklahoma City Educare students and our Senior Services Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (GRG) program. This year, Pre-K students got an exciting visit from the Rolling Thunder Book Bus and each student was able to walk onto the bus and pick out their very own book to take home. The Thunder also adopted 10 Sunbeam grandfamilies at Christmas and treated them to a shopping trip at Target. Boys and girls had their very own Thunder player shopping assistant and the Thunder Girls helped grandparents in selecting gifts for themselves.
For families like Beverly’s, the GRG program
has provided great comfort. She and her
husband are raising nine grandchildren.

Volunteers are one of the most precious community resources from which Sunbeam has to draw. Our volunteers step in to do childcare or plan parties for foster children, read to preschool students at Educare and provide Christmas gifts for families in need. Volunteer Shirley Perkins has been involved in each of these activities for more than five years as a Friend of Sunbeam.

“When I volunteer with Sunbeam I know that there is purpose behind what we do there. I have heard clients talk about what a difference the programs have made in their lives and I have personally seen how happy the children are,” Shirley said.
Senior Services is one of Sunbeam’s largest programs, serving individuals
55 and older through five programs and three sub-programs: Senior
Companion Program, Foster Grandparent Program, Emergency Senior
Shelter (the only of its kind in Oklahoma), ADvantage Case Management
and Caregiver Fundamentals Program, which also includes Grandparents
Raising Grandchildren (GRG), Care Trak and Powerful Tools for Caregivers.
In addition to support groups for caregivers and opportunities for seniors
to give back to their communities, Sunbeam also walks alongside
grandparents who are raising grandchildren to help as they care for a
second generation of children. Sunbeam does this through a holiday
assistance program, helping grandparents provide Christmas gifts to their
grandchildren and through the back-to-school backpack distribution.
SENIOR SERVICES
Last spring, the OKC Thunder’s Russell
Westbrook heard about the strides
Kerstin had made in bettering life for
her family and through his Why Not?
Foundation surprised Kerstin with a
new car to help her have reliable
transportation.
Sunbeam celebrated the expansion of its early childhood development
programs as a result of a $3 million federal Early Head Start Child Care
Partnership Grant. This milestone will allow us to reach 312 more children
ages birth to three years in 13 new locations in addition to OKC Educare,
Tony Reyes Bilingual Center and Emerson Alternative High School Early
Head Start programs.
Sunbeam’s program changes children’s lives but also parents like single
mom Kerstin Gonzales, who was able to complete her high school
education while her two sons had quality daycare at Emerson. She was
also matched with a Family Advocate who helped her problem-solve,
locate necessary resources within the community and to set and achieve
individual goals such as enrolling in college.
EARLY CHILDHOOD
“Sunbeam has been such an amazing support,” Kerstin said.
“To me, Sunbeam is my family.”

Seth and Missy Ward have two children of their own and within the span of
seven weeks added three more children to their family, birth to eight years
old. Seth says it’s important for foster parents to look at the commitment
realistically. “It’s about having faith and stepping out of your comfort
zone,” he said, “but also about the commitment you make. The main thing
a child needs is love, patience, and stability. Out of that they learn to trust.”
Children come into foster care because of severe neglect, abuse,
abandonment, or because of a parent’s incarceration or death. Sunbeam
has served children in foster care for more than 100 years, recruiting
dedicated families and making placements with the goal of keeping
families together and strong. What makes our program unique is that we
serve children ages 0-17, and to support the needs of foster parents and
children, our foster families have access to all of Sunbeam’s services,
including counselors who are trauma certified and children receive priority
placement in our high-quality early childhood services.
FOSTER CARE Sunbeam Family Services offers high-quality, affordable counseling
services for people of all ages, including support groups. Sunbeam’s
counseling continues to expand its reach in the community helping with
life’s challenges such as grief or loss, depression and anxiety, anger
management, overcoming negative behaviors or navigating through
changes in the family.
Carolyn Wall came to a point as her husband’s caregiver where she knew
she needed extra support for her journey. She joined a Sunbeam Caregiver
Support Group and also sought Sunbeam’s counseling services. Sunbeam
helps her deal with the emotional issues that affect the whole family.
“I feel like everything is here at Sunbeam. There are so many outreach programs to help me, and everyone is so positive and upbeat! I just love it here and am extremely grateful. I know that it’s all going to be okay because I have Sunbeam.”
