March 12th, 2017 ~ 2nd Sunday of Lent

HOW WE TRY TO MANIPULATE THINGS… Sunday March 12 2 a.m. --- We turn our clocks back. Was it really the farmers who wanted to do this as we often hear? Or was it to give more light to school children on their way to school? Was it just a government idea to say money? I am sure you have heard a lot of reasons over the years, some true and some just one of those “legends” that seem to always float around. We try to control the Sun but in reality the Sun is the sun and never changes we just make believe that it does to effect us in our little world. How about the Oroville Dam in Oroville, California? People wanted to control the flow of water and a few weeks ago put themselves in danger because of the weakening of the earthen dam and they had to let the water rush out of spillways. Water likes to go where water likes to go. I am just using these two examples to point out that when we try to manipulate things there is always a danger that something can go wrong if we are not careful. In regard to Lent one of the things we should reflect upon is how do and who do we manipulate? It is obviously wrong to manipulate people into situations that are wrong. It is wrong to not respect the freedoms of others. Manipulation often seems to imply a selfish desire to obtain something for ourselves instead of things for the good of others. How is your lent progressing? …Fr. Joe THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK… Seeing things from God’s perspective takes time and a readiness to question conventional wisdom. By prayer, fasting, and works of mercy, we learn to look at life from God’s viewpoint. THIS WEEK FOR LENT I WILL… I will refrain from not wearing my favorite color or I will list 5 things I am grateful for each day. WELCOME HOME TO HEALING… “Welcome Home” is a diocesan initiative to invite all Catholics to experience the grace of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confession is a wonderful opportunity to set aside our sinful ways and to draw closer to our Lord. See lent schedule page. Go to www.WelcomeHomeToHealing.org RICE BOWL – ENCOUNTER INNOVATION Read the enclosure in your rice bowl each week….this week we encounter Evelinna in Zambia as she and other mothers in her community learn new ways to provide nutritious meals for their growing children and families. How do we ensure that those who are hungry have not only food by true nourishment? Visit crsricebowl.org for more

ST. PAUL’S INSIDE THE WALLS… Go to this website: https://insidethewalls.org/ and find the many opportunities open to our parishioners for programs, talks, conferences at our Evangelization/catechetical center of the Diocese of Paterson. WHY WE ARE CATHOLIC… We are Catholic because we believe: From the day Peter confessed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, the Master began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things. . . and be killed, and on the third day be raised. Peter scorns this prediction, nor do the others understand it any better than he. In this context the mysterious episode of Jesus' Transfiguration takes place on a high mountain, before three witnesses chosen by himself: Peter, James and John. Jesus' face and clothes become dazzling with light, and Moses and Elijah appear, speaking of his departure, which he was to accomplish at Jerusalem. A cloud covers him and a voice from heaven says: “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” The Catechism of the Catholic Church 554 LENTEN DISPENSATION – ST PATRICK’S DAY… from Bishop Serratelli “I hereby grant a dispensation from the laws of fast and abstinence to all Roman Catholics living in or visiting this diocese on Friday, March 17, 2017. This dispensation is given with the strong recommendation that the faithful honor both Saint Patrick and this holy season of Lent by some special work of charity or exercise of piety in place of abstinence”…Bishop Arthur Serratelli OLM BOOK CLUB… Join us Wednesday, March 15th at 7:00 pm, in the parish conference room as we discuss this psychological thriller “The Dinner” by Herman Koch A darkly suspenseful, highly controversial tale of two families struggling to make the hardest decision of their lives—all over the course of one meal - serving up everything from compromised family values to political convictions. This month’s pick is from book club member, Rosa-Marie Solomon. For more book club info email: [email protected] or [email protected] VILLA WALSH ACADEMY… Presents – “Thoroughly Modern Millie” Saturday March 25 @ 7 p.m. and Sunday March 26 @ 3 p.m. $12.00 973 538 3680 call for information and tickets. BLESSING OF EXPECTANT/ADOPTING PARENTS… Later this month on the weekend of March 25-26 at all the masses we will be offering a blessing for expectant/adopting parents. Please let your family members and friends know they are welcome to come for this blessings.
