Is the Corona Virus a chastisement from God? In one sense every affliction, from a stubbed toe to terminal cancer, is a chastisement: God permits evil to help us grow. The greatest evils of our time?Nazi concentration camps, Soviet gulags, and Khmer Rouge killing fields?produced great saints, from Maximilian Kolbe to Walter Ciszek to Francis van Thuan. Do not fear suffering, because it can strengthen us, purify us, and sanctify us. Three times St. Paul asked God to remove his ?thorn in the flesh,?but God told him ?My grace is sufficient for you.?St. Paul then embraced his affliction: ?I am content with weakness, with affliction, with suffering for the sake of Christ, for when I am weak then I am strong.?The Marines say ?pain is weakness leaving the body.?The Corona Virus can destroy us, or it can strengthen us by trusting more in God than ourselves. A Happy Death What is the Corona Virus doing for us right now? For starters, it?s forcing us to think about death. 3000 people have perished in Italy, and among them thirty priests. They picked up the virus while attending to their people, because a priest should not and must not isolate himself. But that is true for all of us. The ?total war?we are waging against this microscopic organism had forced us to isolate ourselves. Is ?self-isolation?better than COVID-19? How much of our communal life, so compromised already by isolating technologies, are we willing to destroy to avoid even the possibility of catching the virus? Is almost complete social isolation the price we are willing to pay to protect our earthly lives ?at any cost?? How many businesses and schools and social groups will never recover from California?s total shutdown? We priests continue to celebrate Mass?alone (well, with one server and one camera operator). How many will get so comfortable with ?watching Mass?on their computers that they will never return to the real community? On Thursday I drove through deserted streets and past closed businessesto pray over a man who had just died of cancer. His widow?s cries could be heard throughout the entire apartment building. The family was gathered around his bed, and they needed to be together. They needed a priest. They needed some assurance that death is not the worst thing that can happen. Isolation is the worst thing that can happen to a human being. Isolation is hell. Is the Corona Virus a chastisement? Certainly. It is God?s wake up call to a people who live superficial, worldly lives. He wants to prepare us for death, which is a gateway to eternal happiness. We finished our novena to St. Joseph on Thursday, with thisprayer: ?Saint Joseph, obtain for me the grace of a happy death. Help me to spend each day in preparation for death. May I, too, accept death in the spirit of resignation to God?s Holy Will, and die, as you did, in the arms of Jesus, strengthened by Holy Viaticum, and in the arms of Mary, with her rosary in my hand and her name on my lips.?God does not want usto be morbid. He wants usto wash our hands, to keep a safe distance during times of pestilence, and to flourish during our short lives on earth. But our greatest earthly happiness is love?to be in relationship with another. Love is stronger than death itself. Let us prepare for death, for eternity, by living and loving well on earth. The Sunday Scriptures by Fr. Joseph Illo Man Born Blind (1 Sam 16: 1b, 6-7, 10-13a; Eph 5:8-14; Jn 9: 1-41). We are all blind men walking, and I think the Corona Virus helps us to ?see? what is really important in life. Jesus heals the man born blind, but then says the Pharisees, who ?see,? are really blind in their hearts. If there is one good thing about this Virus, it?s that it helps us put first things first, and see what is really vital: love of God and love of neighbor are more important than physical life itself.
