Embodied Meanings and Signs of God: Experiences of Transcendence

The distinguished British philosopher and cultural and social commentator Prof. John Haldane (University of St. Andrews, Scotland, and Baylor University, Texas) explores a profound account of experience, knowledge and the aesthetics of architecture to answer the question: How can human experiences signify God?

A philosophical happening comes to Star of the Sea Parish. Join us as Prof. John Haldane (University of St. Andrews, Scotland and Baylor University, Texas) explores a profound account of experience, knowledge and the aesthetics of architecture to answer the question: How can human experiences signify God?

A proponent of analytical approaches to the philosophy of St Thomas Aquinas, Prof. Haldane?s books include Atheism and Theism, An Intelligent Person?s Guide to Religion, Faithful Reason: Essays Catholic and Philosophical, Reasonable Faith, and Seeking Meaning and Making Sense. He is currently working on a book on education Truth in Transmission.

Among Prof. Haldane's distinguished accomplishments? He was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI Consultor to the Pontifical Council for Culture and served for ten years as such, and as a member of the Pontifical Academies of Life. He is also Chair of the Royal Institute of Philosophy in London.

In 2016, Best Schools (USA) named him one of ?the 50 most influential living "philosophers"; in 2018 the international Catholic weekly The Tablet named him one of the 50 most influential "Catholics"; and in 2019 the Catholic Herald (London) included him in its list of ?Catholics of Today?

The Sunday Scriptures by Fr. Joseph Illo Must Shine (Is 58: 7-10; 1 Cor 2: 1-5; Mt 5: 13-16). ?You are the light of the world, the salt of the earth,? Jesus tells us. That makes us feel pretty important. We Christians are royalty, a kingly, priestly people! But with privilege comes responsibility. ?Your light,? Christ adds, ?must shine, to the glory of God.? He doesn?t say ?should shine? or ?might shine? but MUST shine. We must save souls; we must bring people to Mass and help rebuild marriages and shore up a crumbling society. We are anointed ones!
