Our Monthly Bulletin Nan Chiau Primary School February 2017
Dear Parents,
I hope that your child has been settled in his/her class and made new friends. As I walk
around the school, I am heartened to see laughing children playing and eating happily with
their friends. All of our students are paired up with a buddy for 3 years in NCPS. The
objective of the Buddy Programme is to inculcate a culture of
care, whereby an older student will look out for a younger
buddy, just like how siblings will show concern to one another.
These buddies will meet up during festive seasons to celebrate
the occasions together as well as to learn how to show care and
respect to each other.
As teachers and parents, we need to develop our children to understand the world.
Singapore is a small nation with manpower as our only resource. We often have to look at
global trends and shift gears accordingly to ensure sustainability and growth for the nation.
Our children need to be able to establish trust easily with people from different nationalities,
countries, ethnic groups and cultures. This is essential in preparing our students for the
future when they grow up and start to contribute to the global economy. In retrospect, the
recently concluded Singapore-China Forum provided our students the opportunity to
collaborate with counterparts from China on the common theme of ‘Water’. This activity
allows our students to hone their 21st Century Competencies widening their horizon
preparing them to be future-ready.
The school values the partnership we have with our parents and will conduct a Parents’
Survey at the end of each year to gather your valuable feedback. We appreciate all feedback
and will review your inputs as part of our continued efforts for improvement.
We look forward to fostering a close partnership with you in our
children’s holistic development.
Happy Lunar New Year!

School Policies and Procedures
Homework Policy
Homework is assigned to the students to help them consolidate and reinforce what they have
learnt in school. It is also a good source of feedback to the teachers to find out how well the
students have grasped the concepts so that they know where and how to bridge the learning
gaps. Here are the guidelines on the estimated time taken to complete daily homework for the
respective levels:
Primary 1 & 2 : approximately 0.5 to 1 hour
Primary 3 & 4 : approximately 1 to 1.5 hours
Primary 5 & 6 : approximately 1.5 to 2 hours
You may refer to the school website for more details on the School Homework Policy.

excuse to the Form Teacher upon his/her return.

School Events
P1 – P6 Orientation
Our students eagerly looked forward to the reopening of
school after the December Holiday. All students were
paired up with a buddy for 3 days. Primary 1 with their
Primary 4 seniors, Primary 2 with their Primary 5 seniors
and the Primary 3 with their Primary 6 seniors. During
recess, the buddies ate together, played together and
explored different parts of the school together. It was a
great way to start the new school year. The students
enjoyed spending time with their buddy and learning from one another.
Academic and behavioural expectations were also set by
their subject teachers during the 3 days. Class rules were
drawn up together and routines were established. The
students also spent some time playing level bonding games
and attended talks by their respective Year Heads. What a
great start to a wonderful 2017!
“My buddy, Kai Qian, took very good care of me. She made me not afraid of school anymore. I like
that she accompanies me to buy food and shows me secret places in school. I wish I can spend more
time with my buddy.” - Emma Chng, P 1 Kindness
School Opening Ceremony 2017
The School Opening Ceremony was held on 12 January in
Kong Chian Hall. The staff renew their commitment in the
presence of the students to mark the beginning of the
academic year. The
teachers were reminded
to continue to strive for
excellence in both work
and attitude as they put in their best effort in assuming their
roles as educators.

P2 – P6 Principal Briefing and Meet-the-Teachers sessions 2017
The Principal’s Briefing sessions were conducted to share the
school’s focus so that you can partner us in reinforcing the same
focus and values at home. This is important as learning is
practised and contextualised not just in school but also at home.
We would greatly appreciate your support in this area. At the
same briefing, the respective Form Teachers met up with you in
the respective classrooms to share the learning focus and
expectations with regards to your children’s development. The Form Teachers would be
uploading the slides shared during the sessions via SNAC.
2017 Chingay Parade Preview Show
Our Primary 4 students, together with their P4 teachers, had
the honour to witness the Chingay Parade Preview Show
2017 at the F1 Pit Building, Marina Waterfront. The theme
for this year was "Soundwaves Chingay, WeCare
Singapore”.
Chingay has become a uniquely Singaporean Lunar New
Year tradition, held during the first weekend of the Lunar
New Year. This yearly street parade is now a national festival, celebrated by Chinese, Malays,
Indians and Eurasians alike. To celebrate its 45th anniversary this year, there was stunning water,
fire, snow and lighting effects as well as pyrotechnics and fireworks display, followed by the
reminiscing of the best of Chingay classics & sing-along to melodious Singapore Songs also
known as "新谣"Xinyao.
“I learn to appreciate the beautiful blend of cultures evident in the performances that shows the
uniqueness of Singaporeans.” – Caleb Tan Jia Le, P4 Sincerity

Singapore-China Forum
The Singapore-China Forum was
jointly organised by Nan Chiau
Primary School and our overseas
education partners. It provided
an opportunity for our Primary 4,
5 and 6 BiCEP students to
exhibit their oratorical and thinking skills as they interacted
with peers from Changshu International School, Suzhou Science and Technology Foreign
Language School, Yiwu Foreign Language School and Jining Confucious International School.
Students from both schools were engaged in a forum based on the theme of “Water” on 23, 24
and 25 January. The students purposefully participated in discussions and presented their ideas
on specific topics revolving around the theme. The best 5 teams
were shortlisted and competed for the Gold, Silver or Bronze
certificates. This activity played a part in nurturing our children
to be equipped with the 21st Century Competencies, putting our
children in good stead for the future.
NC 70th Anniversary Celebration
On the eve of Chinese New Year, Nan Chiau Primary
School and Nan Chiau High School participated in
"NC70 Record Breaking - Chinese Knots" in celebration
of Nan Chiau's 70th Anniversary. We gathered the old
and the young as a big united Nan Chiau Family, tying
knots in unison.
It was indeed a momentous event for Nan Chiau Primary
as everyone rose to the occasion and contributed in many
ways to make this event memorable. We were awarded a
certificate from Singapore Book of Records in
recognition for the “Most Number of People Making Knotted Rings Together” with a total
of 3398 participants.
The school thanks the parents and alumni for their strong support to make this feat a reality.
The Nan Chiau spirit was evident as all of us worked hard together for this event. May we all
continue with this wonderful Nan Chiau spirit of togetherness!
Together is Better!
