SYRIAC THEOLOGY - Vatican II theologians worked hard to produce new models and language for the sacramental life of the Church. So they turned to Syriac Christianity and found a vision free of philosophy and closer to Scripture. Three important writers: St. Ephrem (4th century), Jacob of Serug (5th century) and Isaac the Syrian (7th century) will be discussed at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Tuesday Evening: April 24 at 7pm. Bring a Bible! Mary Hansbury Ph.D.

A Retreat for Widows - April 27 to April 29 - Marianist Family Retreat Center in Cape May Point, New Jersey (Tel. 609-884-3829) - Join with other widows as we look at our own individual stories for courage and wisdom. We hope to discover how in the sharing of our stories we continue to find strength and hope. There will be time for sharing in small groups, Eucharist, and other appropriate liturgies. Sleep Outside so Homeless Youth Don’t Have To Nearly 2 million kids will face homelessness this year. You can help. Join the Sleep Out Movement. Raise critical funds and awareness to make sure these kids have a safe place to sleep at Covenant House Pennsylvania every night. Then, spend an evening getting to know some of the kids whose lives will be better because of your work – and spend the rest of the night sleeping on the street in their place. On April 27 women from across the region will come together and SLEEP OUT to send the clear message to homeless young women that they are not alone.

UPDATE ON SAMRA, OUR SYRIAN STUDENT… It has been a little over two years since OMC was first approached to help sponsor Samra, at the time marooned in Turkey. Fast forward two years and Samra is deep into her sophomore year at La Salle University. As Samra herself sees it, “Last year was one of the hardest years of my life,” filled with cultural, academic, physical and emotional challenges; nonetheless, we are pleased to report that she has made tremendous strides in acclimating. Samra has chosen to major in Spanish with a minor in business, which along with her fluency in French, Arabic and English, will help equip her for her intended career in adventure tourism. Samra is committed to graduating by May 2020 and to guarantee that, she hopes to pick up some extra credits at community college this summer. She is looking into the possibility of a summer internship at La Salle or also the possibility of campus employment. Samra now tells us:

“If someone had asked me two years ago where I think I would be in two years, my answer would never be the US, yet I am here ... in a good school, surrounded by the nicest people who became my family here, and I have a whole future in front of me…. Thanks to all of you for being part of my life, and part of my dreams…I have no words to express how thankful I am, and I wish…that I will be able to pay it forward someday.”

To make Samra’s dream of an education possible, OMC parishioner Jeanne Andrews has opened her home and her heart to Samra, La Salle has extended a partial scholarship, our neighbors Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill and St. Martin-in-the-Fields have contributed generously. As we prepare for Samra’s junior year, we’re asking you once again to participate in a “gift line” for the Peace and Justice Committee’s Syrian Student Fund. All gifts will go into the fund for Samra’s expenses.

Fourth Sunday of Easter - 9

The Sermon on the Mount is the first of five great discourses in the Gospel of Matthew. Jesus begins this discourse with the well-known Beatitudes, one of which is: “Blessed are the peacemakers, they shall be called children of God.”

Making peace is about establishing, maintaining and nourishing right relationships: right relations with God, with self, with others and with the created order. Peacemakers strive to create places in which evil, violence and injustice are diminished and righteousness, healing and justice are increased. They are committed to making peace even in the face of misunderstanding, resistance and hostility.

Peacemakers work for integration, health, wholeness and holiness, especially with the people with whom they interact every day.

Francis de Sales gives us much food for thought—and action—when it comes to making peace. He wrote: “We must in all things and everywhere live peacefully. If trouble, exterior or interior, comes upon us, we must receive it peacefully. If joy comes, we must receive it peacefully, without a throbbing heart. If we need to avoid evil, we must do so peacefully, without disquieting ourselves; otherwise, we may fall as we run away and give time to our enemy to

kill us. If there is peace to be promoted, we must do that peacefully; otherwise, we might commit many faults in our hurry. Even our repentance itself must be made peacefully.” (Letters to Religious, p.62)

Of course, we know from human history (and from our own personal experiences) that peacemaking seems to bring with it its own share of difficulty. Peacemaking is not only its own reward, sometimes it is its own punishment. Ever heard the expression that “no good deed goes unpunished”? The truth of the matter is that trying to bring about peace brings about trouble of its own.

In order to shed light on this truth, St. Francis de Sales offered the following observation: “Our Lord is called the Prince of Peace; therefore, wherever Christ is absolute master, all is peace. Yet, it is true that before giving peace he causes war, separating heart and soul from our dearest, most intimate and most common affections (Mt 10: 34), such as inordinate love of self, confidence in self, complacency in self, and the like. Now when our Lord separates us from such fondly cherished passions, it seems as if our hearts have been flayed alive. Nevertheless, notwithstanding all this writhing in spirit, it is not

without peace. So long as we keep our will nailed to God’s will, while in no way repudiating our obligations nor the brave fulfillment of them, we do not lose peace. To be at peace amid wars and to live in sweetness amid bitterness is to be truly Prince of Peace.” (Letters to Religious)

To be sure, then, peace is not the same as the absence of conflict or difficulty. It is about remaining grounded in the love of Christ, who is the source of all true and lasting peace.

Peace is something for which all of us deeply hope and long. Yet, peace sometimes seems so very elusive.

How can we effectively promote peace for ourselves and others? Francis de Sales offered this advice: “Let us do three things and we shall have peace. First, let us have a thoroughly pure intention of desiring the honor and glory of God in all things. Second, let us do the little we can for that end and according to the advice of spiritual companions. Third, let us leave to God the care of all the rest.” (Letters to Religious, p. 60)

Live in peace. Walk in peace. Share it with others...peacefully.
