Burley. The summit included a welcome to new community leaders, a ribbon cutting and a tour that highlighted the “green” aspects of the building: high solar reflectance index roof, advanced air sealing and insulation, Energy Star appliances and water-conserving faucets, showers and toilets. Since 1991, Claretian Associates has developed over 130 affordable homes and apartments within a 12-block area. It’s also the lead agency for Chicago’s New Communities Program in South Chicago. Its mission: Working with community leaders, residents, and organizations to provide affordable housing and related services for low and moderate income people, build resident-based leadership, and serve as a catalyst in creating innovative solutions to improve the quality of life. Rev. Mark Brummel, a Claretian Associates board member for 23 years, said helping people is key. There are 130 housing units in South Chicago – and the new 9100 S. Burley apartments added seven more. “It’s very important to bring affordable housing to people who need it,” he said. “And we know affordable housing is needed in the community. Park It Here! While we had a fairly mild winter, we are all happy that it is over and welcome Spring. The recent record-breaking rains give new meaning to “April Showers Bring May Flowers”. Beyond the significant rainfall, April has also brought another season of America’s Pastime…Baseball. I was proud to participate in the Opening Day ceremonies of the East Side little league. The hundreds of players, coaches, and dignitaries who paraded down Ewing Avenue, and the hundreds of spectators, give the young players the recognition, support, and memories they deserve. The Hegewisch little league had an equally successful opening day with the numerous teams proudly marching down Baltimore Avenue enroute to the historic field on Carondolet Avenue. Along with the beginning of the baseball season, recent warm weather has encouraged residents to get outside and enjoy themselves. I am pleased to see the countless number of children and adults on the bike path, at the schoolyards, and in the parks. I was just at Rowan and Mann Parks where I observed so many enjoying the fresh air, green grass, and recreational activities including baseball, softball, and soccer. My recent outings also reminded me of the wonderful assets we have in our parks. Our various parks including Mann, Rowan, Cal, Pietrowski, Wolfe, Bessemer, Veterans, Bradley, and Trumbull provide countless opportunities for our youth and adults alike. While most of us are familiar with the basic offerings of the parks, most notably the fields, I thought it appropriate to highlight some of the lesser known and utilized amenities of our local parks. Mann continues to be the local favorite for softball and baseball at this time of the year. One should not forget to go downstairs and take a peek at the wonderful woodwork being produced at the woodshop in the basement. Additionally, the indoor pool, which is open
year round, is one of the best in the entire City. Although local basketball season has ended, Rowan Park has the most popular youth basketball program in the area. More than 300 children, starting at the early age of 6, participate in East Side Hoops Basketball. While very competitive, this league focuses on instruction and offers our youngsters positive activities during the winter months. Calumet Park is the home of soccer on the southeast side. Youth and adult leagues fill all fields during the season. The $1 million dollar plus artificial field which was completed just a few years ago provides our athletes the opportunity to play even during inclimate weather and on a professional caliber surface. Don’t forget to pop into the fieldhouse where the Southeast Historical Society, exercise room, woodshop, gymnastics program, and train room offers the entire family countless fun opportunities. The tiny little Veterans Park fieldhouse at 97th and Muskegon may be small in stature but powerful in results. The field house, no larger than most living rooms, has generated some of the most successful teams throughout the City. Vet’s Park regularly produces City champion teams in baseball and other sports. Trumbull Park along 103rd Street serves the South Deering and Jeffrey Manor communities and is one of the best kept secrets around. Not only does the park have an outdoor pool for those hot summer days, the boxing program has some of the finest local athletes. Although not part of the Chicago Park District, the East Side Soccer Dome at 11919 S. Avenue O is a treasure. This facility boasts two indoor, artificial surface fields which are a local favorite especially during the winter months. Trumbull Park along 103rd Street serves the South Deering and Jeffrey Manor communities and is one of the best kept secrets around. Not only does the park have an outdoor pool for those hot summer days, the boxing program has some of the finest local athletes.

“I want to get that step. The hop, shuffle, stomp.” “How many times do we go that way? I’m kind’a missing that step.” Every Wednesday morning at the South Chicago Senior Satellite Center, 9233 S. Burley, the Southeast Senior Hoofers practice and talk shop. “We’re going to tighten up our performance for Friday,” teacher Brenda Starr Woods said as she readies the first song for class. “We’ll do a flash mob today and we’ll do ‘Smooth Criminal.’” The Friday performance she’s referring to is their gig at the annual Cinco de Mayo Senior Health & Resource Fair that was held at the Senior Center on May 3. And the “flash mob” is the “love Train for Peace Parade Dance” at 90th & Commercial Avenue on Saturday, May 18 at noon, sponsored by
South Chicago Chamber of Commerce, Ald. John Pope, and others. “I brought the right shoes,” Grace Villarreal said, moving to her spot on the floor with the rest of the group. “I love my shoes!” She’s been in the Hoofers for three years. And she said she has her dad to thank for her love of music and dance. “He played trumpet in his own orchestra so, growing up, there was always music in the house,” she said. “Plus, my dad and I would watch the old black and white movies with Fred Astaire and Sammy Davis Jr. When movies were movies.” “Crazy legs. 1, 2, 3, dig. Pony. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.” “Stamp. Brush back. Stamp. Brush. Step, step.” “Come on!” Woods said. “I’m not going to be in front of you all of the time! Didn’t you
ever do marching in school?” “That was a long time ago,” Catheryn Samuel said, over a bunch of laughs.Samuel, a second grade teacher for 48 years, said she got involved in tap dancing when she retired. This year marks her sixth with the Hoofers. “I do this for exercise,” she said. “I like to meet new friends. I like to collaborate with my instructor. Flexibility—that’s what it does for me.” Woods has been teaching tap for over 40 years. She said her parents were dancers. “Dancing, especially for seniors, is good for the mind and body,” she said. “It keeps their cognitive skills functioning. And then there’s the health benefits of moving. And it’s fun!” linda Carter is one of the newest members. This August she’ll make a year in the club. “It’s fun,” she said. “Besides work, this is
one of the things that keeps me on a routine. Not only for health reasons, but there’s also the camaraderie. We learn cultural things. This is more like what the world should be like.” Ruby Scott is also a new member. “I like it!” Scott said. “In in it for the exercise and to get me out of bed early. Otherwise, I’ll be in front of the TV slumping somewhere!” Headed by the Chicago Department of Family & Support Services, the Senior Center, “where everyone 55 or better is welcome,” also holds crocheting classes, fitness classes, bingo, and more. A popular song by Marvin Gaye over 40 years ago, this was the message that the Tinni Feet Cultural Arts Company brought to 91st & Commercial Avenue on May 18 for its “love Train for Peace” rally. Tinni Feet and the Southeast Senior Hoofers danced and clapped to music with the words “peace and love” as a group of 30 residents joined in. Cars driving down Commercial Avenue stopped to look and beep their horns in support. “This is the best way to get people motivated,” Grace Villarreal of the Southeast Senior Hoofers said. “I was born and raised in this neighborhood and crime was never like this. We need to spread the word that violence isn’t the way.” Tinni Feet is a nonprofit organization
that’s geared toward children ages 3 to 14. Its cultural programs are also for seniors. “Our goal is to make sure that no kid is left out of the cultural form,” Shapell Smith, vice president, said. “In all mediums: art, music, dance, tumbling, theater. We leave nobody out.” Kheli Archer is the group’s president and Brenda Star Woods is the staffing & client service director. She’s also the tap instructor of the Southeast Senior Hoofers, based out of the South Chicago Senior Satellite Center, 9233 S. Burley. 12 GWHS JV Red South 2013 Conference ChampionsBy Juan & Elizabeth Quintana & Steve DonleyONT Contributors
George Washington High School’s JV Girls Softball had an exciting spring. The freshmen and sophomores were coached by Steve Donley and Rachel Yzaguirre (Assistant Coach) for the second year and May 9th they captured their 2nd Conference Championship in three years. The 2013 GW Junior Varsity Girls Softball Team: Amanda Kusar, Ariday Martinez, Aveni Ramirez, Brianna Alba, Caitlyn Montejano, Cecilia Castellanos, Chantel Raygoza, Destiny Sierra, Emily Faria, Jamese Gray, Jennifer Castaneda, Jesenia Frausto, Jessica Quintana, Julissa leon, Maritza Darling-Ramos, Michelle Davis and Elizabeth Navarro. They currently sit atop the Chicago Red South Conference with a record of 10-1. The team played a double header on Wednesday, May 8th at Rowan Park, in which the Patriots outscored Jones 16 to 8 in the first game of the double header. In the second game the GWHS Patriots lost 9 to 7 even after having 12 hits with Alba hitting 1 for 4; Davis, Castaneda, and Kusar hitting 2 for 4, and Quintana going 3 for 4. They rallied back, down from three runs to two in the seventh inning but fell short in their last game of the season. All in all, it was a tremendous season for the girls scoring a whopping 156 runs
this year and limiting all their opponents to only 58 runs. Only one team came close to double digits versus the GWHS Patriots this year and that came on their only loss to Jones College Prep as they scored 9 runs. Amanda Kusar had two runs batted in (RBIs) during the Jones first game, Brianna Alba had three hits as well as newcomer Elizabeth Navarro and Emily Faria. All the girls played really well overall throughout the season. Over the season the Patriots had 8 games in double digits and won by more than ten in 5 games. They blasted away teams such as Kennedy High School 24-6 on April 4th, Brooks in a double header 11-0 and 23-2, Curie 16-6 and 20-3, Chicago AG Science 21-9 and 7-2, and Kelly High School was a close one 10-7. leading the team this year in nearly every category is newcomer freshman, Brianna Alba. Alba is the top pitcher on the team with eight wins in seven starts. Even more impressive is the young right-hander’s ability in the strikeout category. Alba has struck out 64 players this year in 40 innings with an ERA of 3.69. This outstanding freshman is also leading the team in batting average at .552. Other stand-outs this season include shortstop and pitcher, Jennifer Castaneda hitting .484, and leading the team in RBIs with 21. The offense has in fact been a huge highlight of the season so far, as there are currently others hitting better
than .400; such as catcher Michelle Davis (.542) with 11 RBIs, utility infielder Julissa Leon (.444), first baseman Jessica Quintana (.406), Amanda Kusar is batting (.520) with 18 RBIs, Maritza Darling Ramos is batting (.444), Caitlyn Montejano is batting (.400), as well as newcomer Elizabeth Navarro. The only two players to hit homeruns this season are Jennifer Castaneda (2) and Amanda Kusar (1). Things have really been going well for the freshmen/sophomore girls’ softball team these last few years. They won their Conference Championship two years ago and also had a Final Four finish in the city tournament. The team finished third last
season with a second round run into the playoffs as well. last week they won their first two playoff games first one was versus Juarez High School and their second was to lincoln Park High School. But, they fell short losing to Taft High School in the semi-finals 10-2. It’s been a great season for the girls who worked hard and have had one of their better seasons this year. It was a great experience as some of the girls are moving up to the varsity level next year and some are continuing their play in the summer thru various park leagues, (Hegewisch Synergy and the East Side teams at Rowan Park).
