Wood from responsibly managed forestsWood is an excellent choice from an environmental point of view, provided that it comes from responsibly managed forests. Wood is renewable, recyclable and biodegradable. IKEA does not accept illegally felled wood or wood from intact natural forests. This is one of the basic conditions that IKEA imposes on suppliers of solid wood. Suppliers must be able to document the origin of their wood. Our long-term goal is to source all wood from forests certified as responsibly managed, and we have our own forest specialists working in the field. Together with WWF, we work to combat illegal logging and to increase the availability of wood from forests certified as responsibly managed. The co-operation, starting in 2002, has contributed to doubling the certified forest areas in China. It has helped increase the certified forest areas in Russia from 3.3 million to 20 million hectares – making it the world’s second largest country by certified forest areas.

Economizing on Resources Economizing on resources is part and parcel of the IKEA approach to product development and production. It helps to save not only money, but the environment, too. We use no more material than is necessary, and try to use as much renewable and recyclable material as possible. And because our self-assembly furniture is easy to dismantle, it is simpler to recycle and reuse materials such as wood, plastic, metal and glass. Together with our suppliers, we always look for opportunities with new manufacturing techniques and innovative materials. So IKEA product developers and technicians don’t just sit at their desks in the office. They spend a lot of their time out in the field on a never-ending journey of learning.

#09NORDENNORDEN birch table is a great example of how IKEA tries to get the best possible return from every tree trunk. Introduced in 1998, it was probably the first time anyone had thought of making furniture also from the knotty top part of the birch tree instead of burning it as firewood or grinding it up for chipboard production.

NORDEN table $319.99 Clear lacquered solid birch.

Less Air Means Fewer Emissions Goods transport by road, rail and sea between suppliers, distribution centres and stores account for a large portion of carbon dioxide emissions from IKEA operations. So it’s important to pack every container and every truck as full as possible, and to use transport service providers that meet our environmental criteria. The benefits of not transporting more air than necessary were clear to us already in1956, when LÖVET table was designed with removable legs so it would pack flat. IKEA flatpacks and other smart packaging solutions are of key importance both in keeping prices low and in reducing environmental impact. Flatpacked furniture for self-assembly also means that most items are available in the store’s self serve area so that customers can take their purchases home to enjoy the same day. When we design IKEA packaging, good looks are not uppermost in our minds. We don’t design flatpacks to sell more but to save more – on optimized loads and reduced transport with fewer emissions. We think recyclable brown cardboard boxes are one of our best designs ever!

#13KLIPPAN KLIPPAN sofa is one of our most popular and long-lived products. It is also one of the bulkiest, making it hard to transport in a cost-effective and environmentally sound manner. But a few years ago KLIPPAN become a knock-down piece – the armrests and back slip into slots in the seating base – and each pallet could fit twice as many sofas. The number of transports dropped sharply, and consequently both costs and carbon dioxide emissions decreased.

#16BESTÅBESTÅ is made from Board-on-Styles (BoS), another strong and light material that minimizes the use of resources. Just like LACK, it has a honeycombed paper filling, but the production technique is more efficient. Long strips of particle board or MDF are laid out on fibreboard sheets of up to 250 by 500 cm, the paper filling is placed between the strips and then topped with another thin layer of fibreboard. The construction is then cut to the product’s final shape and dimensions before being lacquered or veneered.

Pick a Tree, Plant a Tree While environmental consciousness is getting a lot of attention these days, IKEA Canada is proud to have been working to help reduce CO2 levels in Canada for the past thirteen years. Through our “Pick a Tree, Plant a Tree” program, our co-workers have personally planted more than 14,500 trees. Every holiday season, when you buy a Christmas tree from an IKEA store in Canada, part of the sale of that tree goes toward planting saplings across the country the next spring. One reason this program has been so successful over the years is our partnership with Tree Canada, a not-for-profit national organization that has been planting trees since 1992.

A Lot More Than Just Trees

So what kind of impact will 14,500 trees have? These trees and shrubs will offset a total of 1774.4 tonnes of CO2 in a 20 year period. This equals someone driving a mid-sized car for more than 290,000 kilometres or 50 times from Vancouver to Halifax.

#17IKEA Loading Ledges The IKEA patented loading ledges are a smart alternative to traditional wooden pallets. By using flexible ledges, the size of the goods decides the final measurements of the unit load, instead of the pallet’s rigid platform. The ledges are made from polypropylene plastic, which is continuously recycled and made into new ledges. Size and shape are optimized for containers and load units are easily handled with forklifts. Thanks to the low weight, containers can be loaded with two tonnes more goods than if wooden pallets were used.

We Don’t Compromise on Safety IKEA products must be safe, both for the environment and for human health. That’s why, whenever they develop a new product, our designers, product developers and technicians factor safety, quality and environmental impact into the equation right from the drawing board.

There are no shortcuts to safety or environmental adaptation. New materials are subjected to extensive risk analysis and tests before being used in a product and the product itself is tested continuously. External laboratories and institutes complement the work done in the IKEA test lab.

It goes without saying that the IKEA range must comply with the strictest applicable laws and safety standards as well as regulations on the use of chemicals and other substances in the manufacturing process. Our policy is that if one country tightens its rules, we introduce these new regulations on all IKEA markets, whenever possible.Customers should always feel confident when buying and using IKEA products!

We side with the children The IKEA Social Initiative, established in 2005, manages the company’s social involvement on a global level. The mission is to improve the rights and life opportunities of the many children. The main partners are the two leading global child right organizations; UNICEF and Save the Children. Today, we are the largest corporate donor to both organizations. IKEA Social Initiative invests in a range of programs with a holistic approach, aiming to create substantial and lasting results. Long-term commitments are focused on South Asia, and especially India, where the needs are great and IKEA has long business experience.

Make A Wish CanadaAs part of its Children’s Support Program, IKEA Canada will be working with a new national charitable partner in 2010. Make A Wish Canada grants wishes to spread hope, strength and joy to children, ages 3 to 17, with life-threatening medical conditions across Canada. Each IKEA store will partner with local Make A Wish chapters to grant room makeover wishes to children in their respective markets.

A More Sustainable Life at Home IKEA wants to offer solutions and know-how that enable our customers to live a more sustainable life at home. Our range can help them save energy and water and to minimize household waste – simple measures that contribute to a better world and save on household expenses.

“People all over the world are becoming more and more aware about the importance of not wasting natural resources. IKEA can help customers make a difference here,” says IKEA project manager Per Stoltz.

He is part of a special task force with the mission to spread know-how and develop smart, value-for-money solutions for the home, with particular focus on kitchens, bathrooms and lighting.

“Appliances account for a large chunk of household energy consumption and there are huge savings to be made in many homes. A new, efficient refrigerator uses up to half as much electricity as a typical 10-year old fridge,” says Per.

He also sees big potential for saving water – as much as 15 percent of world water consumption takes place at home.

“For example, doing dishes by hand and rinsing them under running water requires seven times as much water as if you had just scraped them off and turned the dishwasher on once it’s full.” says Per. Another environmental aspect of life at home is food waste.

“As much as a quarter of all food is thrown away every day in many households. This represents not only a lot of money, but also a lot of wasted CO2 emissions from food production. Our wide range of food storage products can help prevent some of that waste.” says Per.

IKEA Canada’s Energy Commitment We conduct regular social and environmental audits to ensure our stores are maintaining and improving their efforts in recycling, reducing waste, and saving energy. Not only are these audits motivating, they also help our stores stay up-to-date on new technology, services and programs that could help them with their social and environmental projects. Continued conservation is not just part of our plan, it’s our mission. We challenged ourselves to reduce energy usage by 25 percent compared to 2005 levels. As of April 2009, IKEA Canada has done it. We spent seven months auditing the integration of more efficient technologies and environmentally minded practices. The end result is a 25 percent reduction in our in-store energy consumption. It was a rewarding transformation worth every kilowatt-hour.

ENERGY STAR

To help you help the environment every day, IKEA has chosen to carry a number of dishwashers and fridges that meet ENERGY STAR specifications. This international symbol for energy efficiency identifies products that are among the top energy performers on the market. Depending on the type of product, choosing an ENERGY STAR qualified model can help reduce energy consumption and costs by 10 percent to 65 percent compared with a conventional product.

IKEA Recycles Batteries and CFL Bulbs Batteries and energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) contain low levels of mercury and must be recycled properly. Since 2001, all IKEA locations in Canada have offered a “Free Take Back” program for CFLs and batteries — even for non-IKEA brands.A bright idea: compact fluorescent light bulbs may cost a bit more than traditional light bulbs. But because they use up to 80 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs, you’ll quickly recover your purchase cost. And they’ll keep your home bright for a long time. A CFL that’s on three hours per day should last at least five years. Now let’s look at the big, bright pictureDid you know that if each of Canada’s 12 million households replaced one 60-watt incandescent bulb with a 15-watt CFL, we would save a total of up to $73 million a year in energy costs? And we would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 397,000 tonnes — the same result we would get if we took more than 66,000 cars off the road.

It’s the final step in our Bag the Bag program that launched in October, 2007, when we began charging 5 cents a bag and donating all proceeds to Tree Canada. A total of $280K was raised to support programs run by our environmental partner, Tree Canada.Customers can bring their own bags or buying a reusable IKEA Blue Bag for only $1. The IKEA Blue Bag is made of recyclable polypropylene plastic, hefts up to 60kg.

PARK GREEN - Hybrid and fuel efficient parkingIKEA appreciates customers who consider the environment when purchasing a vehicle. Since 2007, IKEA has offered preferred Green Parking spaces at each location to reward customers who drive hybrid and fuel-efficient vehicles, which the Canadian government defines as using less than 6.5 litres of gas per 100 kilometres. In addition, all IKEA Canada stores are located on public transit routes, and this is a significant factor in determining new store locations.

IKEA wants customers to enjoy their visit to the store and take time to relax in a pleasant atmosphere during shopping. That’s why all IKEA stores have a customer restaurant. The restaurant serves fresh, modern meals; including extra healthy options and at least one dish made with certified organic ingredients. All IKEA Canada stores have a food shop, the Swedish Food Market. If offers a taste of Sweden by selling Swedish specialties – such as meatballs and crisp bread – under the IKEA FOOD brand. Supporting sustainable cotton production Just like wood, cotton is renewable and biodegradable. But most cotton plantations use huge amounts of water, artificial fertilizers and pesticides. We want the cotton in IKEA products to come from more sustainable sources, and we work together with WWF to promote this. Since 2005, IKEA and WWF run Farmer Field Schools in India and Pakistan. There, cotton farmers learn how to use water, essential pesticides and artificial fertilizers more efficiently and in ways that are safer for both people and the environment. The projects have proved that it is pos-sible to process and cultivate cotton at a lower cost while also reducing the environmental impact. In Pakistan, the average use of pesticides has decreased by 48 percent, the use of fertilizers by 32 percent and water use by 40 percent. At the same time farmers’ earnings have in-creased 87 percent. IKEA is one of the founding members of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), which is developing globally accepted criteria for “Better Cotton”. IKEA’s long term goal is for all cotton in IKEA products to be “Better Cotton” and produced in a more sustainable way.

#56ALÄNGLee, a co-worker in one of our Californian stores, came up with a way to improve the packaging of ALÄNG table lamps. Lee discovered that the box could be shrunk as much as 30 percent if only the lamp s components were rearranged. So, Lee tipped off IKEA packaging technicians in Sweden who in turn consulted with suppliers. Now, thanks to a great initiative and teamwork, each pallet holds 24 ALÄNG lamps compared to only 18 before!

ALÄNG table lamp 29.99. Paper and nickel-plated steel.

Responsible and Efficient Production IKEA products must be produced under acceptable working conditions by suppliers who take responsibility for the environment. This is why all our suppliers must comply with the IKEA code of conduct IWAY. We believe the best way to contribute to positive development at our suppliers is to maintain close and long-term relationships with them. IKEA representatives encourage and support suppliers to take more responsibilitythemselves. For a supplier, investments in working conditions and the environment can lead to better productivity and higher profitability. The basis for IKEA product development is our insight into production conditions. Products and production methods are optimized in cooperation with suppliers, so designers, product developers and purchasers often work on site in factories.

IWAY, specifies the minimum requirements we place on suppliers and describes what they can expect from us in return. IKEA inspectors regularly visit suppliers to audit and check that IWAY criteria are met.

They help set up action, and we have seen continuous positive development since IWAY was introduced in 2000. In addition to our own inspections, IKEA uses external auditors to verify the results.

IWAY requirements include:• Compliance with national legislation• No forced or child labour• No discrimination• Payment of at least the minimum wage and

compensation for overtime• A safe and healthy working environment• Responsibility for waste, emissions and the handling of

chemicals

They are made by Indian village women entrepreneurs, with a hand-stitched quilting technique using wool and cotton. The project has helped to economically and socially empower more than 20,000 women through self-help groups, as part of a broad program to prevent and eliminate child labour in Uttar Pradesh in northern India.

Co-worker TrainingTraining is an essential part of understanding sustainability at IKEA. The goal is to create awareness, knowledge and a sense of responsibility. All co-workers receive sustainability training within the first six months of joining IKEA and we are proud to say that over 80 percent of our co-workers have received sustainability training. This year, a new e-learning computer-based training will provide co-workers with an even more flexible approach to learning about sustainability at IKEA.

Our never-ending job As mentioned at the start – we are on a never ending journey towards a more sustainable future. Whatever we set out to do, we will find ways to do it even better. That is why this list of improvements will go on as long as we do. See the list and follow our progress on www.IKEA.ca

The Never Ending List on www.IKEA.ca Being a company who takes better care of the environment, the earth’s resources and each other isn’t easy. After all, it’s a big job where we must be diligent in our actions — which is why we created a Never-Ending List - it’s our way of being accountable for all the things we’re doing to help our planet and the people on it.On our new website, you will find what we’re doing and how we’re doing it worldwide, and at home here in Canada. We know there’s always more we can do to help people and the environment – that’s why we’re always adding improvements to our Never Ending List. But at IKEA, we focus our efforts on a select number of areas where we are truly able to make a significant impact: products and materials; suppliers; energy and transport; and community involvement. We’re keeping score to make sure we’re heading in the right direction, so we have set Key Performance Indicators related to social and environmental responsibility. Visit www.IKEA.ca to see how we’re doing so far.At IKEA, we also believe in working together - find out how you can help people and the planet while you’re shopping at IKEA. Think globally, act locally – together you and IKEA can make a big difference! We look forward to your visit to www.IKEA.ca!
