From the Desk of the Pastor May 7, 2017Easter Renovations

Fourth Sunday of Easter

Next Week: The Fifth Sunday of Easter1st Reading: Acts 6:1-7 • 2nd Reading: 1 Peter 2:4-9 • Gospel: John 14:1-12

Second Reading: 1 Peter 2:20b-25In his letter, St. Peter alludes to the Suffering Servant from Isaiah (53:4-12) in order to demonstrate that Christ’s suffer-ing was pre-ordained and that its purpose was to save us and bring the lost sheep back to the shepherd.

First Reading: Acts 2:14a, 36-41This reading depicts St. Peter, preaching convincingly after the descent of the Holy Spirit. He asserted that Jesus is the Messiah and was rejected and put to death. Those who ac-cepted Peter’s exhortations repented and were Baptized.

Gospel: John 10:1-10These verses are the beginning of the Good Shepherd Dis-course. Initially, Jesus warned against the thieves who pre-tend to be the shepherd, but whose actions betray their in-tent. In this selection, Jesus called himself “the gate for the sheep,” similar to referring to Himself as The Way. In the line immediately following this selection, He states, “I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

Mission StatementWith the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Ro-man Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe, seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by fostering actions that nourish both the spiritual and social needs of our people and build community within and without

our parish.

Beginning Wednesday April 12, the 1958 Immaculate Conception School boiler that had produced 4,000,000 BTUs of heat for the building was dismantled. During the Easter vacation, a brand-new Boiler, costing $119,750.00, was installed and fired up by Commercial Climate. Since December 2016, the old boiler has been on its last breath and thanks to Rich Ambrosio and our maintenance men, the old boiler continued to pump out heat until it was completely turned off last week.

In the middle of August 2016, the air-conditioning system in Immaculate Conception Church failed and, after in-spection, the chillers were irreparable. We even had to rent a portable chiller for two months to prevent our parish-ioners from being uncomfortable for Masses and sacraments. After four bids, we settled on Cool Breeze HVAC; and last weekend, the new AC cooled the church during confirmation and First Holy Communion. The cost was $115,000.

How are we going to pay for all of this?Renew + Rebuild

This year we are NOT participating in the Cardinal’s Annual Appeal in the usual manner. Cardinal Dolan has launched a 5-year pledge campaign that every parish will participate in called RENEW + REBUILD. Our goal will be two mil-lion dollars here at Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady Parish. The Major Donor Phase has been happening since December 1, 2016 and has been a quiet phase. We have been doing very well and I will share with you everything as we approach the end of this phase. Then we will be appealing to every family in our parish to participate.

If you have received any letter or information asking you to give to the 2017 Appeal, please do not send anything in but please call the Parish Office.

Ball Field - I am sure you have been watching and have seen that the field has been stripped, reshaped, and leveled. Mr. Rob Sypher from Tuckahoe Youth Association and Mrs. D’Angelo, one of our 8th Grade teachers, have been col-laborating and the field should get the nicest face lift it has had in years. Professionals helped and even gave gifts to help with the cost of renovation.

New Altar Cross & Candles for the Sanctuary – when did that happen? You guessed it – Happy Easter Season!

Father Anthony Domenic Sorgie

88. What can I do about the shortage of priests??

In the Catholic Church throughout the world, the num-ber of priests increases. However, in the United States, Canada and parts of Europe, fewer men are entering discernment and formation for the priesthood.

It is not that God is calling fewer men here than else-where. It may be that fewer act on their call due to lack of information or encouragement. Start by praying for more men to recognize their call to the priesthood.

Then, look for a young Catholic man who has integ-rity and a strong relationship with God, has an ability to work with a variety of people, and has good friends and healthy relationships. Perhaps you already know some-one like this who serves the Church as an altar server, a lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, or a CCD teacher. Then, tell him why you think he will make a good priest and suggest he contact one of our parish priests or the vocation director. Studies have shown that 9 out of 10 priests in the US are happy in their vocation and ministry and would definitely choose it again if given the chance.

Being Pastor here, I can see young men who are think-ing of a vocation to the priesthood, please encourage them to come in and talk and find out more about the seminary.

If you have questions about any aspect of our Catholic Church and Faith, just drop us a note or call and we will answer them to the best of our ability.
