“With a bit of resolve, we can become like children again. We can find the magic that is still there, brightness inside the unpromising, though it involves ignoring superficial things like cellulite, wrinkles and paunches. The essential-the soul-is always there. And immortal. Unlike the surfaces, you do have final control of that because it is the essence of you. Grasping the gratuity of life and inevitability of death, I rarely wake up grouchy. I do not think: "Oh, God, another day!" I think: "Oh, God! Another day!" Many worthier than I did not wake up. I did. What am I going to do with this day? Realizing every day is a gift you did nothing to deserve makes an honorable person appreciative. And vigilant. Forget Death catching me with sin on my soul --let Death never catch me bored! It is all in the attitude. If you go out looking for problems or difficult people, it is amazing how many you find. But when we view the world through Christ's eyes-the ones that penetrate the trivial surfaces-we become astonished as the real souls emerge, true selves who yearn for the same things: to be found, to be understood, even loved.” From “The Wisdom of Oz: Taking the long way home” by William J. O’Malley S.J. (Fr. O’Malley teaches at

Seattle University. His latest book is You’ll Never Be Younger by Orbis Books)

This week: The Second Sunday of Easter Acts 4:32-35 l John 5:1-6 John 20:19-31

Background: Every year the liturgy of the Second Sunday of Easter gives us the appearance of

the Risen Lord to the Apostles on Easter Evening without Thomas and then a week later with Thomas. Some scholars believe this passage formed the original ending of the Gospel with Chapter 21 being a later addition. The last verse certainly reads like an ending and the story

makes a perfect commentary for those of us who have come to believe in the Risen Lord without ever seeing him. Our reflection focuses on what is required of those who cannot see but are asked to believe? We were not in the room with the

apostles, we cannot touch his hands or his side: how do we confirm and maintain our belief?

Next Week: Third Sunday of Easter Acts of t 3:13-15, 17-19

Adult Bible Study

The Weekly study will resume this week on Tues-day, at 6:30 pm in the parish office conference room. All are welcome to this time of study on

next Sunday’s Gospel led by Fr. Larry

We cannot live Easter without entering into the mystery. It is not something intellectual, something we only know or read about... It is more, much more! “To enter into the mystery” means the ability to wonder, to contemplate; the ability to listen to the silence and to hear the tiny whisper amid great silence by which God speaks to us (cf 1 Kings 19:12). To enter into the mystery demands that we not be afraid of reality: that we not be locked into ourselves, that we not flee from what we fail to understand, that we not close our eyes to problems or deny them, that we not dismiss our questions.... To enter into the mystery means going beyond our own comfort zone, beyond the laziness and indifference which hold us back, and going out in search of truth, beauty and love. It is seeking a deeper meaning, an answer, and not an easy one, to the questions which challenge our faith, our fidelity and our very existence. To enter into the mystery, we need humility, the lowliness to abase ourselves, to come down from the pedestal of our “I” which is so proud, of our presumption; the humility not to take ourselves so seriously, recognizing who we really are: creatures with strengths and weaknesses, sinners in need of forgiveness. To enter into the mystery we need the lowliness that is powerlessness, the renunciation of our idols... in a word, we need to adore. Without adoration, we cannot enter into the mystery. —— Pope Francis, Easter Vigil Homily
