OUR PROMISING SENIORS Manesh Naran MANESH Naran has shown promise as a cricketer since his primary school days. He went on to becom e a regular member of the Lcnasia High School’s first team. Manesh’s determination to succeed on the cricket field earned him a place in the first Azad cricket club junior team in the year 1981. His potential was soon recognized and he was drafted into the senior team the following season. From then onwards, Manesh has been a regular member of the team and has been performing with distinction as an all-rounder. At twelve years of age he was attending Junior Board meetings. He represented the Transvaal under 16 team in the season 1984/1985, and was the only player to seore a century in the interprovincial tournament. He also played volleyball for the Transvaal High Schools in 1986. Recently, he represented the Transvaal League Cricket Board in 1993. Currently, he is vice captain of Azad senior A team and his ambition is to help the club achieve league honours. Manesh has recently taken up the secretarial post of Azad cricket club, and is doing an excellent job. His determination to succeed and to tackle every task is highly commendable. Manesh is also an academic - he is currently doing his final year B. Com. degree at the University of South Africa. Dharmendra Vasanjee DHARMENDRA VASSANJEE started playing cricket in the junior leaque for Azad Cricket Club. With guidance from senior players, he was soon playing for the third Azad Cricket team, where he experienced his first full day Sunday cricket. AS a junior he represented Transvaal Invitation XI His father takes keen interest in his progress and that should encourage him to reach greater heights Paresh Valla PARESH Valla was bom in Johannesburg on 30 April 1977. At the age of six he joined Azad CC and progressed through the junior ranks.Presently a prominent player in our senior team. He represented Transvaal Primary School in 1988,Transvaal High School in 1992 and toured George with the development squad.His greatest feat is scoring 120 mns against United in 1993. Paresh olher interest includes soccer, tennis and squash.Paresh has all the qualities to reach the top.

Significant and exciting events involving our clubs are presently taking place. The fourmost important events will be detailed in this newsletter.
1) MERGER BETWEEN AZAD CRICKET CLUB AND SW ARAJ SPORTING CLUB The active membership of the two clubs have decided unanimously to form one club so that the Progress Sports fie lds can be acquired and developed. This can then be a permanent base for the members of the " UNITED CLUB ". Our clubs have a common origin, largely a common membership including the officials, and a common desire to promote sporting activities. Pooling all the resources will make us stronger and more exciting. The two clubs will finally merge once the respective 50th anniversaries have been celebrated.
21 ACQUIRING AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROGRESS SPORTS FIELD We have had numerous meetings with the Johannesburg City Council motivating our case to obtain a lease for the Progress Sports Field. The City Council has agreed in principle to our request and given us a draft lease to study. In anticipation we have jo intly set up a DEVELOPMENT PROJECT to raise funds. Fencing the field, resurfacing and setting up other basic facilities will require a mammoth effort by our membership and of course a great deal of funds.
3) CELEBRATION OF AZAD'S 50th ANNIVERSARY (1993 - 1994 SEASON)This year, Azad have embarked on a number of projects to celebrate it's 50th anniversary. A brochure will be published to coincide with a function in March 1994.A logo for the occasion has been chosen and will be printed on ties, skippers etc.
4) CELEBRATION OF SW ARAJ SPORTING'S 50th ANNIVERSARY (1995 SEASON) Although it is still early , all concerned have agreed that a celebration will take place in the year 1995.
