Our Report to the Community Lebanon | Fiscal Year 2018
Dear Friends of Mercy,
Mercy Hospital Lebanon is better today because of your generosity. The continuing improvements to our facility – and to the level of care we’re able to provide – are possible because of your thoughtful support. Over the last year, your gifts have helped our neighbors in powerful ways. Here’s just a glimpse into some of the patients’ lives you have touched:
• Patients at the Curry Cancer Center receive nutritional shakes and have a wide selection of magazines to enjoy while receiving chemotherapy.
• Patients receive transportation assistance and nutritional shakes at Mercy Clinic Rolla Oncology.
• A Mercy Hospice patient received a new pair of eyeglasses so she could see her great grandbaby before passing away.
• Patients and families struggling with a health crisis or the loss of a loved one now have a beautiful new Chapel for refuge and prayer.
Mercy’s founder Catherine McAuley said, “We should be shining lamps, giving light to all around us.” You have helped light the path to healing for patients who are sick and suffering in our community. By contributing to Mercy’s important work in Lebanon, you are part of Mercy’s mission to bring the healing ministry of Jesus to all those in need. We can’t thank you enough for your generosity!

Construction on the chapel is now complete. Because of its location within the hospital’s first interior courtyard, the chapel is quite unique and has been referred to as a “ship in a bottle.”
Design elements include a metal roof to match the hospital, vision glass, cast stone, stained glass and natural stone walls. “We knew we needed a bigger space for prayer and quiet reflection,” said Brennon Willard, chair of Mercy Health Foundation Lebanon Board of Directors, “and our community agreed, coming together to give us the funds to pay for the project.”
Generous donors include the Mercy Lebanon Auxiliary, Mercy co-workers, and more than 30 community donors including Laclede Electric and the family of the late Ken Miller, a former hospital board member and supporter of Mercy Health Foundation. (Continued on back)
A Grateful Family Gives Back
The love of Jeanine Germeroth’s life, Norman Germeroth, passed away in Mercy Hospital Lebanon’s palliative care room in September 2016. He was quite ill and was under the care of Mercy Clinic physician, Dr. Sam Assafeen.
Jeanine was grateful for the incredibly compassionate care her husband received from Dr. Assafeen and the entire care team. After Norman’s passing, Jeanine was in for a check-up with
Dr. Assafeen. She thanked him and asked if there was anything she could do to express her gratitude. Dr. Assafeen recommended that Jeanine sit down with Mercy Health Foundation to discuss opportunities to give back to Mercy’s mission.
Jeanine shared with the Foundation the importance of her faith and how she and her sons often visited the hospital’s chapel to pray for Norman.
“During our time at Mercy, the spiritual healing we received was just as important as the physical care given to Norman. We relied on our faith to see us through the difficult task of saying goodbye,” said Jeanine.
When Jeanine heard of the need for a bigger and more conveniently located chapel, she knew she had found the way she wanted to give back. It was important to Jeanine and her sons that every family experiencing a health crisis have a place for prayer and refuge within the hospital. In his loving memory, and as a symbol of their gratitude for the care extended to Norman, Jeanine and her sons made a gift to the Mercy Hospital Lebanon chapel campaign.
Norman Germeroth’s family chose to honor his memory with a gift to Mercy Health Foundation.
