Worship in DecemberAdventSundays of preparation and expectation

Worship during Advent is filled with songs of hope for what is to come and expectation and preparation for the miracle of Christ’s arrival in our lives. We begin our sung liturgy with Prepare a Place While You’re Waiting which reminds us that our real “busy-ness” before Christmas is focused on making a place for Christ in our lives. The lighting of the Advent wreath during worship is the visual embodiment of our wait-ing. As Advent progresses and one more candle is lit each week in Advent, we can see the Light is coming closer. The new song in our liturgy, Light One Candle to Watch for Messiah, encour-ages us to “let the light banish darkness.” The liturgy ends with the upbeat spiritual Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning, a joyful reminder that “the time is coming nigh.”

Christmas Eve Services7:00 P.M., 9:00 P.M. and 11:00 P.M.

(Note some changes)Christmas Eve worship brings the story of Christ’s birth in word and song through the favorite form of lessons and carols. Candlelight and the singing of "Silent Night" will conclude all three services. The 11:00 P.M. service will be the only service at which Holy Communion is served.

For those members of the congregation who choose which service to attend based on the musical offerings, please note that we have changed which ensembles participate at each service in order to reflect the current atten-dance patterns of the congregation. The Brass

Ensemble and soloists will provide musical offerings at the 7:00 P.M. service. Chancel Choir and Memorial Bell Choir will be at the 9:00 P.M. service. A bell ensemble and soloists will be at the 11:00 P.M. service.

Christmas Day SundayWorship10:00 A.M.

Christmas Day falls on a Sunday this year, so we will celebrate Holy Communion at this one service only.

My Spirit RejoicesA Holiday Concert

Sunday, Dec. 11, 4:00 P.M.

Let your spirits be lifted when our OSLC musicians perform My Spirit Rejoices, a concert of music celebrating the season. This is our biggest musical event of the season!

The Memorial Bell choir, Chancel Choir, Brass Ensemble, and Children’s Choir all bring their musi-cal gifts to this wonderful afternoon. Orchestral players from several local ensembles will fill out the ranks of OSLC players for Andrew Carter’s "Magnificat," a setting of Mary’s song of rejoicing when she learned she would bear Christ’s son. Tune up your voices, because the congregation joins in on several of the favorite carols!

The musicians consider this an evangelism event; we encourage you to bring friends to church who might otherwise not come. The price is right—a freewill offering will be taken to support the work of OSLC ministries.

Shannon Dickens, (425) 226-6603, is coordinating a post-concert reception: please call her if you can help by bringing food or with set-up or clean-up. Help is also needed in reconfiguring the sanc-tuary after worship on Sunday, December 11.

OSLC Council Adopts Extended StudyLeave/Sabbatical Policy

While it has been the practice of our congrega-tion to offer an extended study leave, or sab-batical, to our ministerial staff after six years of service, it had never been adopted formally until October 2005, when the OSLC council unani-mously approved the Extended Study Leave (Sabbatical) Policy for OSLC. OSLC’s new policy is grounded in the Biblical roots of the Sabbath as a gift from God of rest, renewal and hope and reinforced by the Northwest Washington Synod Guidelines which recommend extended study leave for rostered staff.

Extended study leave provides many benefits to the congregation and its recipients.

1) It offers an opportunity to reflect on the call to ministry and the relationship with God and God’s people.

2) It is an expression of mutuality and care for one another.

3) It assists in building strong leadership by offer-ing the opportunity to keep abreast of new devel-opments and stimulation of effective ministries.

4) It provides rejuvenation necessary for those serving in a long-term pastorate.

5) It demonstrates the generosity and support of a congregation to its staff.

6) When congregations search to fill positions, it makes the congregation more attractive to the best and brightest personnel.

The recently adopted OSLC Extended Study Leave policy includes the following:

“An extended study leave of 12 weeks (three

months) may be granted to full-time rostered persons after serving at OSLC for six years. This recommendation may also be granted on a pro-rated basis to rostered staff serving at least 30 hours per week for a period of six years at OSLC. For example, a rostered staff person serving 30 hours per week for a period of six years would be eligible for 9 weeks of extended study leave. The OSLC council may, in its discretion, grant extended study leave time to non-rostered pro-gram staff serving at least 30 hours per week for a period of six years. References to rostered persons in this policy will apply to non-rostered program staff granted extended study leave by council decision.”

If you would like to view the entire text of the Extended Study Leave Policy for OSLC, please email Lisa Gillin at [email protected] or con-tact the church office for a copy.

OSL PreschoolNew Fall 2006 School

Our preschool has made a couple of changes for this school year and next school year. Due to low enrollment in the PM 3s class, we have had to close that class for the remainder of the school year. It was a tough decision! With the loss of our PM 3s class we now have the time and teachers to open a 5-day Pre-K in the af-ternoon. This new class will begin in the fall of 2006. More details about the tuition and reg-istration for this class will be available in the new year.

New Senior Spiritual Group

Does getting older mean growing holier? Is ag-

ing all about a decrease in energy and ability,

or is it true that the later decades of life really

are the “golden years?” These and other simi-

lar questions are what the book, Wine at the

End of the Feast is all about. A new spirituality/

study/fellowship group based on reading and

discussion of this book will give seniors an op-

portunity to “embrace spiritual change as we

(gracefully) age.”

This new group will meet for the first time if

there is sufficient interest. If you think you

would be interested in some sparkling con-

versation and enthusiastic fellowship—or if

Larry and I moved to the Boise Idaho area at the end of July, where I was offered a great job with a cabinetry design company in Meridian. We had moved to Marysville last December, and that just wasn’t our spot—we were really hoping for a smaller communi-ty, and Larry wanted better weather. I went through terrible withdrawal missing all of our church family at OSLC, so we were ex-cited to find a wonderful new church fam-ily at King of Glory Lutheran in Boise. We understand that four church families there are from OSLC; however, we have only met the Bob Pederson’s so far. We attended a 40-50’s group dinner and met lots of friendly people.

The weather here is similar to Wenatchee, my home town, and we love all the sunshine, lots of recreation activities, and many street-side cafes and restaurants in the area. We have been biking the many miles of paved trails, and exploring the historical sites that abound. It seems like so many people have RV’s and you can actually find camping sites nearby. The highways driving here are nearly empty, so if you want to visit next year, let us know if you are passing through . . . Thank you so much for all your prayers and support during my last couple of years of hip prob-lems. I am doing very well, and am so grate-ful for the medical science that allowed me to be re-built. Marinda is attending Bellevue Community College, studying Design and is still working at Trader Joes in Issaquah. She moved to her own apartment at Windsong across from the church.
