The SRC ldquoHelp Nepal Mufti Dayrdquo takes place tomorrow Tuesday 23rd June 2015 This special Mufti Day is to help the people of Nepal who have suffered a series of devastating earthquakes recently

Donrsquot forget this is a lsquored white and bluersquo themed Mufti Day as these colours are the colours of the Nepalese flag

Please donate a gold coin which will be collected by the SRC members from each K - 6 class The SRC is also encouraging classes to research interesting facts about the country of Nepal and earthquakes as part of this initiative

Fact Nepal has a flag that is only non-rectangular shaped and no other country has it in that shape Recent researches on flags show that the national flag of Nepal is the most mathematical flag in the entire world With blue border and red filler the national flag has sun and moon embedded in it The two triangles represent the Himalayan Mountains and two major religions that people in the country most follow

lsquoRED WHITE AND BLUErsquo FRUITO-VEGOREMINDER Donrsquot forget that tomorrow is also a red white and blue Fruito-Vego day in keeping with the Nepalese theme So please bring a selection of red white or blue fruit andor vegetables to enjoy mid-morning

2015 NORTHERN BEACHES INSTRUMENTAL FESTIVALWhat a fabulous afternoonevening of music we had on Saturday night

The EHPS Bands dazzled the appraisers and audience alike with positive feedback being heaped upon our talented young musicians

Our Training Band was the talk of the town with the appraiser audience members and organisers of the festival commenting on the size of the band and the skill with which they played together after such a short amount of time

Our Senior Band won plenty of praise with the Bass Clarinet (Millie) Bari Sax (Nelson) and Tenor Sax (Luke) players getting a special mention from the appraiser on the recording She especially liked the bands great choice of music showing diverse playing across different genres

It was also nice to receive this message from another conductor that was present at last yearrsquos and this yearrsquos Festival stating ldquoThe difference in maturity style and obvious ownership of their own dedication to their craft is incredibly evident Congratulations to you allrdquo

Well done to all of the students who performed on Saturday night You are a credit to yourselves and to your school and should be incredibly proud of your performance Thanks as always to our amazing Band Director Mr Steinmann for all his hard work with the band students and many thanks also to Kylie Tyson for stepping in and taking the bands on Saturday night in Mr Steinmannrsquos absence

SRC lsquoHELP NEPALrsquo MUFTI DAY| Ms Bosler on behalf of the SRC

Year 2 visits the Powerhouse Museum|Mrs CullenYear 2 visited the Powerhouse Museum to study how daily life and technology have changed A Powerhouse guide took us on an imaginative tour of the transport section Volunteer guides also added a lot to our visit by explaining some of the features of the very significant Bolton-Watts steam engine or the first No1 Locomotive ndash which in 1855 hauled the first passenger train in Australia Thank you to all the parents who came and made it possible for us to explore exhibits in small groups

There were also some very personal links Tom v d P took a group up to the Membersrsquo Lounge to see an ceramic artwork by his maternal great-grangmother Joyce Gittoes Mrs Gittoesrsquo work can be seen by clicking on this linkhttpwwwpowerhousemuseumcominsidethecollection201108joyce-gittoes-ceramic-art

When we were looking at the Penny Farthing Max H proudly told us that it was invented by his great-great-great-great-great-uncle John Kemp Starley Max has talked to each Year 2 class about his clever engineering ancestors This same great-uncle made two giant tricycles for Queen Victoria (Below is a picture of him being presented to the Queen)

Also his great-great-great-great grandfather James Starley built the Rover Safety Bicycle which was such a successful design that it has remained basically unchanged ever since

Year 2 classes have heard many fascinating stories as all students presented their family history and interesting old objects Thank you to all parents for supporting this meaningful learning

Thank you also to all the parents and caregivers who arranged for their children to attend the evening so that they could be part of such a wonderful event
