Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 20, 2017

Observe what is right, do what is just; for my salvation is about to come,

my justice, about to be revealed. — Isaiah 56:1

From the Desk of Fr. Carlos Macias

Desde el escritorio de Fr. Carlos Macias

Fr. Carlos Macías. LC

Dearest sisters and brothers in the Lord,

Greetings to you. In the previous weeks I have insisted a lot on a type of prayer that I consider as one of the most powerful in the Christian world. I have witnessed on how this simple prayer has profoundly transformed many lives. I speak of the prayer of gratitude. How often do I thank God for specific things during the months, weeks, or days? It is not uncommon to find that many times in the mind the thoughts that predominate could be worries, pains, negativity, etc. It strikes me to see how these types of thoughts can occupy much of our time and energy. I recently heard a talk on this topic where it was said that we could spend 90% of our time focused on 10% of things that do not work in our life. The interesting thing about this is that only seeing the negative and doing nothing about it only poisons our soul more and leads us to a justified solution. Gratitude, especially gratitude to God, allows us to see what the Lord has done and does in our lives. It allows us to see the things that work, which are often the majority and most importantly helps us to see NEW OPPORTUNITIES. When we speak of God being merciful to me, the Divine Mercy means that God is the God of new opportunities. Opportunities that are only given if we see and thank Him for how much He has done for us. Next week I'll talk about how to do the prayer of gratitude.

God bless your week.

Fr. Carlos Macías. LC

Sacred Heart School—Founded by Monsignor Biedermann and The Sisters of Notre Dame

Sacred Heart School opened in September of 1980 under the guidance of our founding pastor, Monsignor Arnold Biedermann, with about 40 students in kindergarten and first grade classes. In January of 1981, the Sisters of Notre Dame assumed administration of the school and continued that leadership until the late 1990s. Throughout that period, the principal was a religious minister, while all staff members were lay ministers. In 1992 Monsignor Arnold Biedermann retired and Father Daniel O’Sullivan began his pastorship. During this time, Sister Mary Francelia SND and Sister Jean Marie SND instilled a reliance on the goodness and providence of God, which is the charism of the Sisters of Notre Dame. Currently, all staff is laity, while a Sister of Notre Dame, Sister Margaret Mary, is the Director of Religious Education for the parish. The charism initiated by the founder of the Sisters of Notre Dame, St. Julie Billiart, endures at Sacred Heart School as we continue to trust in divine providence. During daily prayer, at meetings, and assemblies we say, “Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, we place our trust in you.”

precious gift. Deepen your communication, strengthen your relationship, rekindle your romance and renew your sacrament by attending the next WWME weekend Sep 29 - Oct 1 in Palmdale. Go online to www.twocanlove.org for more information. We help make good marriages better.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles mandates all staff, whether paid or volunteer, and all volunteers who work in any capacity

with or around children, the elderly, or people with special needs are required to complete the initial three-hour VIRTUS® Protecting God's Children for Adults program. This education component helps prevent child sexual abuse by first making every adult employee and volunteer aware of the issues surrounding child sexual abuse. This includes awareness of the many ways sexual abuse harms its victims, their families, the parish, and the community. The awareness session also helps adults learn to recognize the warning signs of abuse and shows them the appropriate way to respond to suspicious behavior. Finally, the awareness session empowers each person with five steps to help prevent child sexual abuse. UPCOMING DATES: • Sacred Heart Catholic Church
