Real AAC Users One of the biggest overlooked resources for speech-language pathologists and beginning AAC users is a profi-cient AAC user. Proficient AAC users have a lot of valuable information to share about what works, what doesn’t work and what it’s like to rely on a device for all commu-nication needs. Communication devices are now being used beyond their dedicated state. These mentors will discuss how communication happens in many ways with a device, not just using a picture board. Participants will be able to: 1. Identify three ways of communicating with a commu-

nication device. 2. Identify three things AAC users wish people wouldn’t

do.

Register for ASHA CEUs at the session room prior to the session.

Session Descriptions

Core Vocabulary Songs and an Update on AAC App Features Add a new tool in your AAC toolbelt with Stephen Kneece, MA, CCC-SLP! Stephen will explain how to get the most out of his core vocabulary songs, regardless of the AAC user's vocabulary set, method of selection, or level of pro-ficiency. These songs are a completely free resource that you can immediately implement into your AAC therapy sessions. Stephen will also walk you through the most re-cent AAC application updates. Participants will be able to: 1. Identify songs to model and provide Aided Language

Stimulation to AAC users. 2. Identify three new AAC app features.

Assessing Skills in AAC

Austin, Joshua, Mariana and Andre are very different chil-dren who are all are struggling to communicate effective-ly. Their teams are sure they need an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) solution, but what solu-tion should we offer? Does each child get the same iPad app? Do they have to prove themselves with light tech communication boards and books first? This session delves into a process for assessing individual students to determine a starting point for AAC implementation. We will consider the partners, environments and the stu-dent's specific skills to lead us to an individualized AAC solution for each child. Participants will be able to:

1. Describe the components of an AAC Assess-ment.

2. Identify tools to support assessment of AAC. This course is offered for up to .3 ASHA CEUs (Various levels, Professional area)
