Mary McCormick Park - Grand Re-OpeningThe purpose of the event was to celebrate the park improvements and to recognize the good work being done by the common Areas Committee. John Moore represented the Committee and cut the ribbon. We had about 40 in attendance and the kids and adults really enjoyed the hoop shoot!

Mary McCormick Park has been improved - the parking lot is now open, play equipment has been added, courts were resurfaced, and the landscaping has been improved.

Stop by and enjoy the improved Park!

A special Thank You to Dick and Debbie Ziglar for all your work on the Grand Re-Opening of the Park.

Fall Preparations By Shawn Varick, S. Varick Maintenance

First S. Varick Maintenance would like to thank you for a great season. Now with fall quickly approaching it is time to consider winterizing your yard and home. In order to have a good start to the season for your yard here are a few suggestions:

1. Put a fall or winter fertilizer down between Halloween and Thanksgiving. Try to get it down a week before the first frost at the latest. We typically use an organic fertilizer for our winter fertilizing. The reasoning behind it is that we can have beneficial microbes still at work for a longer period of time building the soil. The second reason is if you do not use a slow release fertilizer a lot of it can go to waste and go down the drains as run-off.

2. All of your pruning should be wrapped up. At this point only functional cuts should be made. What I mean by that is trim that branch in your path, or limb touching the house. However any major pruning at this point puts your plant in harm’s way if we have an early freeze and the plant has not healed yet. Rhododendrons need to be pruned no later than May if you want that specimen plant. They take the longest to heal out of all of our native plants.

3. Winterize your irrigation. At this point you should water as needed - as I write this we are expecting it to be 87 degrees Wednesday. We typically do 90% of our blowouts by the end of October. What you should expect is have your service provider move all the handles several times on your backflow, this will allow for an easier start up and removes any debris build up from sealing surface. Also, make sure that they do not use full pressure on a large air compressor, 80-100lbs is usually more than enough pressure for a residential client. They can ruin your heads and valve diaphragms if they do not have a zone open when they start. Make sure you have a battery in clock before you unplug it so you do not lose that much needed program. The typical price for this is $50 for hookup and $8-10 per zone after that. If you are paying more than $100-150 you are paying too much.

4. If you have a thin spot in the lawn fix it now, do not wait until spring. In our climate we can usually grow grass all the way up to November 15 without any difficulties. If you’re worried about it put a little cover over seed like Harvest Supreme, or a peat.

Thank you for reading and hope that you have a safe and prosperous winter season.

Big Pond Trail Geocache

Are you bored during the weekends? Do you sometimes wish that there was something to do besides watch T.V. all day? You should go geocaching! Geocaching is an international G.P.S. treasure hunt for all ages, and a geocache has been placed right here in McCormick Woods - for McCormick Woods’ residents only.

A fun geocache on Big Pond Trail for McCormick Woods’ residents!Coordinates: N 47° 29.293 W 122° 42.378Hint: twiddle dee dee, twiddle dee dum, under the roots, of a great big stump. For more information on geocaching, Click here.

Food BankOur community is wonderful when it comes to donations! As you know, we keep a basket at the Association office to collect donations for helpline. Helpline is not only in need of food products, but they absolutely love to get donations of personal hygiene items such as toilet paper, Kleenex, and other toiletries. Products such as soap, laundry detergent or any type of cleaning supplies are welcome contributions as well.

Emergency PreparednessDid you know that in the event of a major disaster such as an earthquake, 911 and emergency services such as the fire department are going to be overwhelmed within seconds!

There are numerous things that you need to take care of in order to be prepared and self-sufficient for three to seven days. You and your family need to know what the emergency preparedness plan is. Here is a list to start with:

• Food and water for three to seven days • Warm clothes • An out of state contact • Flashlight• First Aid Kit

Contact [email protected] if you’d like to learn more about preparing your family or your street for an emergency.

Neighborhood WatchThere is only one thing to remember with regard to Neighborhood Watch: If you see something that makes you wonder what is up, call 911 and report it. Enforcement WANTS to hear from you!

Contact [email protected] if you’d like to learn more about Neighborhood Watch. We’ve had the Port Orchard Police brief a group of neighbors and I’m happy to share this information.

DESIGN REVIEW COMMITTEE - CC&R SpotlightThe “TOP 3” Complaints this past Summer

Along with the governing documents for McCormick Woods, Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (CC&Rs) and Architectural Control Regulations (ACRs), the Design Review Committee would like to note the top three recent complaints.

1.Landscape Maintenance - Landscaping needs to be maintained at all times, including mowing, weeding, edging, pruning, etc. Per CC&Rs, Article 6, Section 6.16 and ACRs, Section IV, Standards-Specific, Items 15 and 17.

2.Parking - RV’s, boats, trailers, etc. may be parked no longer than 24 hours at a residence for the purposes of loading, unloading and cleaning. Additionally, no parking of any kind is allowed on any common area or community open space. Per CC&Rs, Article 6, Section 6.6; and ACRs, Section IV, Standards-Specific, Items 19 and 20.

3. Animals - Owners shall be responsible for the immediate cleanup/removal of all fecal matter deposited by dogs on any property. Dogs must be on a leash. Cats shall be kept indoors at all times unless they are wearing a collar and bell. Excessive barking is considered a nuisance. Also, keeping Pit Bulls is prohibited. Per CC&Rs, Article 6, Section 6.4. We also get complaints when cats use shrub/flower beds, other than their owner’s, as a litter box. The Association considers this a nuisance and asks that you be courteous and clean up after your cat.

Bear SightingWe have had a lot of bear sightings this year in McCormick Woods. This picture was taken by resident Daniel Paden on September 3rd in his backyard off of McCormick Woods Drive.

Eagle’s NestThere is an eagle’s nest viewable from the Big Pond Trail. As you are walking from Deer Park, it will be found on the top of a tree that is growing from an island in a wetland. Look to your left when you see a cyclone fence around a culvert. Can you find it?

Thank You!We would like to send out a great big THANK YOU to everyone that has been so diligent in picking up after their pets. Not only does it help make McCormick Woods a beautiful place to live but it helps our landscapers each Thursday.

We do have one request – when walking your pet and after the doo is in the bag, please dispose of it in one of the many waste receptacles throughout McCormick Woods. We notice that a few people are throwing the used bags in the shrubs along the streets and in the bus sheds, which are used by the children of McCormick Woods. Not only is this unsightly but it’s unhealthy for the children, the environment and nature.

Please continue to do your part by cleaning up after your pets and disposing of it properly. The Association, your neighbors, landscapers, the environment and nature appreciate it!
