Andrew’s CornerSo where is all the snow?
Where I grew up as a kid, wewould usually have snow by thistime of the year. My fondestmemories of the cold winters weremaking an ice rink in thebackyard. My dad and I would goout at night and flood the backyard, building one layer of iceafter another. All theneighborhood kids could come toplay. We used to pretend we wereprofessional ice hockey players, but in reality we were just a bunchof kids having fun.
What are your memories of theseason? I’ve observed how somepeople’s attitude seems to changein the month of December. Forsome reason they have a tendencyof becoming a gentler, kinder, giving soul underneath anotherwise stealth demeanor. Itseems that the holidays causesome magic to spill into theirpersonality.
But then I’ve also observed theother side of the coin where wefind the “bah humbug” EbenezerScrooge-type attitude—peoplewho almost seem to resent the funand festivities of the holidays. Theolder I get, the more I can almostunderstand why people resent allthe busyness of the season, sinceroutines are disrupted constantly.I’ve even caught myself saying a
time or two, “Andrew, be morelike a child and appreciate all thefun, food, and festivities thatDecember has to offer.”
Since my wife and I recentlybecame empty-nesters, I canunderstand that trap of longingfor “days-of-yore” when the kidsbrought that innocent sense ofawe and wonder, love and joy, laughter and energy intoDecember. But with each newyear, I try to challenge myself tobuild new memories. As long asthere is life in this ol’ body, thereare ways to enjoy each day, eachmemory and each situation. Whatit really does boil down tois attitude!
So how will you be spendingthe holidays this year? I will beeager to hear of the differenttraditions and events experiencedby the different families. Please donot stop making memories! Thatis of utmost importance. But ofequal importance is our ability totake a positive attitude toward notjust the season, but of each daythat we are given life on thisplanet called Earth. I suggest weall keep a smile on our face, abounce in our step, and look forthe all the best that this Decemberhas to offer!
“The difference between ahardship and an opportunity isthe attitude we take toward it.” —Rev. Norman Vincent Peale

‘Tis the Season forHealth - by DRCS
Christie StifleThe holiday season is a favorite
time of year for many people, butit can be easy to overlook dietwith all the delicious foods, andeven easier to neglect exercise.Exercise is beneficial for everyone, and is especially beneficial forseniors over 65 years of age andolder. As the body ages, it takes alittle longer to repair itself, butphysical activity benefits people ofall ages and activity levels.
Starting or maintaining aregular exercise routine can bechallenging as you age, especiallyif you are discouraged by illness, health problems and injuries orfalls. While these factors can bediscouraging, these reasons areactually the best reasons to getstarted and keep moving. Thereare many benefits to exercise, andit can be enjoyable, especiallywith other like-minded people.
Regular exercise has numerousbenefits, including increasingenergy, improving mood andsleep, maintaining independence, lowering changes of injury, relieving stress, and eveneliminating symptoms of illnessor pain. Many medical conditionsare also improved with regularexercise, such as diabetes, highblood pressure, osteoporosis, heart disease, obesity, coloncancer, and Alzheimer’s anddementia. Exercise can also
improve your overall sense ofwell-being—it is the key to stayingstrong and healthy.
Remember to speak to yourdoctor before starting an exerciseprogram, especially if you have apreexisting condition. Since it maybe easy to overlook diet andexercise during this holidayseason, it is important toremember all of the numerousbenefits of exercise.
