My Dear Friends,

The (arch)bishop of a(n) (arch)diocese is the sign of unity for the Catholic Church in that regional church.

It is incumbent upon the (arch)bishop to be in union with the other bishops, and, ultimately, for the

bishops to be in union with the Bishop of Rome, the Pope. When a bishop is assigned to a diocese, he is

responsible for that particular geographical region. He is the primary liturgist of the diocese and primary

teacher. He is responsible for making sure that the faith of the Catholic Church is being taught and that

the sacraments are being celebrated according to the liturgical books of the Roman Rite. The bishop is also

the one who ordains priests to help him carry out these functions. We look to the bishop, or in our case,

the archbishop, as our chief shepherd. (An archbishop is a bishop that has a larger geographical region, or

greater amount of Catholics in the region, or is a more influential area of the country). In our Archdiocese

of Hartford, which is made up of the Hartford, New Haven and Litchfield counties, we have been blessed

to have Archbishop Leonard Blair as our sign of unity with the larger Catholic Church. He, like all bishops,

has a very daunting task and a thankless “job” as our chief shepherd. Archbishop Blair has made his role

even more daunting after the initial closings and merging of parishes in his archdiocesan wide pastoral

plan. As his flock, we are called to pray for him for strength and wisdom as he leads us to a deeper love

of our Lord in the Eucharist. It is in this spirit of love for our archbishop that we welcome him next week,

Sunday, September 17th, at 10am as he celebrates Mass for the Parish of St. John Paul the Great

at St. Francis Church.

God Bless.

Fr. John

DEFENDING OUR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY In a letter to the U.S. Senate, the United States Conference for Catholic Bishops (USCCB) urged them to respect life when changing the health care mandate. The USCCB says no health care reform plan should compel us or others to pay for the destruction of human life, whether through government funding or mandatory coverage of abortion. Long-standing “Hyde Amendment” protections must extend to any relevant health care plan in order to prevent federal funding of abortion and not as a temporary fix or future promise.

The general message of Fatima is not complicated. Its requests are for prayer, reparation,

repentance, and sacrifice, and the abandonment of sin.

Our Lady stressed the importance of praying the Rosary in each of

Her apparitions, asking the children to Pray the Rosary every day for Peace.

Please join the Legion of Mary on

Wednesday, September 13th

7pm at St. Francis Church as together we pray the

Rosary for peace.

We have been blessed by a friend who will share her beautiful statues of Our Lady and the children of Fatima with us that evening.
