is March, 32 Holy Spirit Episcopal School students from 5th through 8th grade traveled to Costa Rica for a cultural exchange program. For the past 19 years, students at Holy Spirit School have enjoyed a sister school relationship with students at St. Michael School in San Jose, Costa Rica. is sister school relationship is quite unique and helps students develop a global perspective and understanding of another culture, as well as provides an authentic experience in which to use the native language.

In the spring of even-numbered years, Holy Spirit School middle school students travel to Costa Rica and stay with St. Michael’s School host families for nine days. During this visit the middle school students share projects about Houston, Texas, and the United States with their Costa Rican peers. ey also get to explore a rain forest, see an active volcano, tour a working co ee plantation and experience the Costa Rican culture. During odd-numbered years, middle school students from St. Michael’s School visit Houston for nine days, staying with Holy Spirit Episcopal School host families. e

St. Michael students share projects about Costa Rica with Holy Spirit students and visit cultural sites in Houston and Galveston to learn more about our culture, including NASA, Moody Gardens, Minute Maid Park, Downtown, among

others.“As far as I know, we are the only school in the city that o ers such a unique educational and cultural experience as part of our curriculum.” Says Lori Preston, Head of School at Holy Spirit Episcopal School. “We strive to allow one of a kind opportunities to our students and feel that each child is keenly impacted by these programs and because of such, their lives are changed.”

Although the student exchange program began as a small e ort to broaden horizons, it has grown into a signi cant Cultural endeavor that is an important

means of deepening understanding of each country and promoting international friendship and goodwill. With interdependence among nations on the increase, it has become more and more important to promote mutual understanding of such social premises as language, custom, and cultural traditions and to strengthen heart-to-heart contacts through cultural exchange. Indeed with more than 500+ students who have participated in the exchange over the past 18 years, a majority have remained good friends, even spending vacations together, attending each others’ weddings, and keeping in close contact over many years. is program has an impact that lasts a lifetime!

“What I loved most about the trip was the wonderful hospitality of the host family and how much they loved me. I will never forget them! It’s amazing how, even 5 countries away, the kids at St. Michaels and the kids at HSES...we’re all the same. “

“All the di erent birds and animals we saw were all wild! In Houston, the only toucans you see are in the zoo, but in Costa Rica we saw one in a nest when we were white-water rafting.”

“ e trip to Costa Rica changed my life!”

new books. The program has a proven track record for breaking down the barriers that lead to frustration for struggling readers and building well deserved confi dence by helping students become far better readers by summer’s end.

Encourage ambitious independent learning projects. If your child enjoys writing and storytelling, consider journaling activities. These can be as simple as keeping a diary or more inventive tasks such as using prose, photography and illustrations to chronicle summertime activities such as family trips or camp.

Scientifi cally-minded students can fi nd many exciting “science fair”-type projects through books at their local library and through Web sites that specialize in sharing this type of information. One of the most comprehensive sites for students from elementary through high school is “Science Fair Central,” off ered by The Discovery Channel at hlt p://school.cliscoverv.com/sciencefaircentral.

Middle school students who enjoy mathematics can test and strengthen their skills through Figure This! (mvvv.fi gmethis. org). This initiative features engaging mathematics challenges that are designed to be completed by children and families together.

Volunteer. Lending a hand to those in need and engaging in community service projects can build a strong sense of self-esteem and people-skills. Most communities off er ample opportunities to volunteer through churches, schools, local government initiatives and neighborhood associations. Middle and secondary school students can also fi nd an abundance of well-structured volunteer programs in every state by visiting the “Learn and Serve America” Web site, part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, at \nn,•.learnanclserve.gov.

Turn to teachers and school counselors for help. After spending many months with your child, teachers and counselors can be good sources of information on summer learning activities that tie into your child’s interests and aptitudes. Talking with these educators can help you to discover opportunities to strengthen your child’s grounding in “the basics” and expand horizons for the year to come.

he end of the second semester may fi nd your children exhausted from a year of hard work and fi xated on that great burst of freedom that begins in May or June. If so, your suggestion that they consider some “summertime learning activities” might not go over too well. But staying smart during the warm weather months doesn’t depend on test-taking and fretting over grades. With less structure and more adventure, the following activities can turn leisure time into learning time all summer long.

Look beyond the books at your local library. In most communities, checking out books is just one of the many things you can do at your local library. Many libraries are true resource centers, off ering a wide array of educational and cultural activities. Your child can participate in group learning projects, learn a foreign language, build technology skills and more. Young children in particular can have a lot of fun participating in storytelling activities, while teens can often use libraries to learn about colleges and universities and the steps that need to be taken to qualify for admission.

I f you are facing a move, then you have quite a few choices open to you. Which company that you hire

for your move will always depend on your needs, and there are various levels of ser-vice that you can opt for when you are moving. It is vital, if you want to have a stress free move, to look at all of these options and the various choices that come with each.

Moving Yourself

You can choose to move yourself no matter how much you are moving. There are various truck rental companies that are happy to provide a vehicle large enough to move almost anything. If you value cost eff ectiveness and have plenty of time on your hands, then this may be the best route for you to take.

If you do choose to rent a truck to move yourself, you need to remember that you are responsible for every aspect of the move. This includes everything from pack-ing and loading to driving and unloading. Moving this way can become very time consuming, especially if you are moving on your own.

Moving with the “You Pack Method”

The you pack method is the next level of service after the truck rental. These compa-nies will provide you with the space to put your items as well as the transportation

from where you are to wherever your des-tination is. While this method costs more than renting a truck, you will save time and eff ort by not having to actually drive your things in an unfamiliar truck.

Remember, however, that you are still responsible for the packing and loading as well as the unloading of the provided space. Also keep in mind that you are responsible for damages that may occur due to how you packed your things into this space.

Hiring Professional Movers

The highest level of service in the moving industry is the professional mover. These people are highly trained individuals who can come in and take care of your entire move. This means that they will pack, load, drive, unload, and unpack all of your goods. Not only does this save you time, but you can rest assured that your things will be packed in a professional manner.

There are various diff erent professional moving companies out there and it is up to you to choose the one that will best fi t your needs. Because you will have to choose one to take care of your move, you need to make sure to choose the right one.

Local Moving Companies

If you are moving locally, you will be able to fi nd a variety of diff erent companies ready to provide a quote. Once you have

a number of companies to choose from you should verify that the companies you are considering are licensed, bonded, and insured. You can also ask around your city to see what kinds of dealings other people have had with a specifi c company. Ask if the company uses independent con-tractors or has their own employees. We think using a moving company that utilizes employees is the best route to go. What is the companies breakage policy. Caution against going with the lowest bid or a bid that is based on an hourly rate that seems low.

Things to Consider

When choosing a moving company you should always look at their on time records to see if they have a history of being late. Don’t be afraid to check a companies refer-ences and check their company policies to see how they deal with damages or other problems. Write up a list of all the services that you require for your move and make sure that the company you choose will provide for them all.

Request quotes from multiple companies in order to get an idea of how much it will cost you to move. Make sure that you give as much detail to the moving company representative in order to get an accurate quote. At this point you will be ready to choose a company and move forward with your relocation. While a move can seem overwhelming, following these simple steps can help you avoid extra stress.

There certainly is a variety of choices when choosing a new floor for the home. The different types of floor coverings are numerous due to the new materials being brought to

the market every day. The choice is remarkable but replacing that old carpet with a new laminate floor or stripping the old floor boards can give your house a brand new look. Floor cover-ings which are no longer adequately supported or which rest on uneven ground can split or crack under pressure or move-ment. The moving or dragging of furniture and equipment can cause indentation and deep scratches. Old carpet that is fray-ing at the edges and with stubborn stains suggests it time for a change. The purpose of this article is to look at the different type of floor ideas.

Let’s start with laminate flooring. There are many different types and most have a wood effect finish but there are ones that mimic ceramic, slate or terracotta and even metals such as copper and brushed aluminium. This is usually installed on a thin piece of foam without nails or glue, which makes installa-tion fairly easy but can create a noisy floor. Laminate floor cov-erings basically have the following layers: core, laminate and protective foil. The flooring is made from lengths of high den-sity fibre board (HDF) and they tend to be a locking or tongue and groove versions.

Hardwood is more expensive than other types of materials be-cause they are organic, can decay if left unattended and need preserving with special care. If treated well, hard wood can last a very long time and provide quality support underfoot for all the family. Hardwood planked tongue and groove is, without doubt, one of the best flooring materials and provides warmth, durability and a beautifully grained surface suitable for all room types. More than this, natural timbers mature and improve as they age and are easily maintained and refurbished.

Wood and vinyl floor coverings are popular in the office envi-ronment. Wood is also widely used for some types of industrial floors, particularly in places like foundries where certain resil-ience is required. Because of its resilience wood still has no ri-vals where dance floors and Gymnasia are concerned. Sheet Vi-nyl floors are very economic alternative to wooden or tile floors. Smooth vinyl is the cheapest option while cushioned vinyl is more comfortable for walking on. Linoleum is a floor covering that is definitely regaining its popularity and as an alternative there are vinyl tiles which have a huge range of colours, pattern and price.

Ceramic tends to be more longer lasting and can vary from square or rectangular tiles to handmade tiles of various shapes. These are very popular in hot climates as they keep the house cool. The advantages of tiles are they are long lasting, can be easily cleaned and there is a wide choice floor ideas of differ-ing styles. Floor ideas for your property should not be difficult as there are a wide variety of floors for every part of the house from the kitchen to the bathroom. The only parameters may be your budget and choice of colors and style.

After choosing the type of flooring it is time to make a sound decision about the right installation company. Choose an ex-pert who has experience with the material, the installation pro-cess and the sub floors in your home. This may not be a big box retailer who likely will sub the job out any way. We think it is best to look for the company that will give you personal service. Someone who is eager to please and willing to go the extra mile to make sure the job is done right. Obviously with an expense like this asking for references is certainly expected and any company worth it’s salt will be glad to provide you with them. Though length of time in business is not a rock solid guarantee certainly much can be said about companies with a long track record. In today’s world where business reviews are so transparent and there is a wealth of information out there researching a company is made easier. Remember though that any one can post comments about businesses and there are al-ways tow sides to every story. A pattern of negative comments says so much more than one or two negative posts. Special flooring circumstances and the know how to deal with them are important and can make the difference between a great end product and one that disappoints you every time you walk on it. Additionally a valuable resource for the type of flooring best for your environment can often come from the experienced installer. It is also comforting to be able to visit a showroom and see the way the business operates. After all any warranty offered is only as good as the company behind it. So in the end take your time with this major investment and choose wisely it will be worth your research.

“It’s important to choose the right contractor. The experience a flooring installer brings to the job, will make a difference in the installation quality.”

How To Choose New Floor Covering

BEING GREEN, SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT – WHAT CAN I DO?

• Turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth.• Don’t throw out your trash until the bag is completely FULL.• Use your leftover’s to create a new meal. Get creative. Go online to fi nd new recipes by listing out what you have on hand. This saves you time and money.• Turn off the lights in rooms you are not in & turn all of them off when you are gone for the day or night.• Make a list of errands before you leave the house. Arrange them in a route, in order to get them done quickly in order to save time, gas and money. • Pour left over water (ie from bottles or glasses of unfi nished drinking water) in one container and use it at the end of the week to water your plants.• Take your shoes off at the door. This keeps your fl oor cleaner longer which saves time and money.• Clean out your closet of ALL the clothes you don’t use and give them to charity. You know you won’t ever use them and we all know there are people out there in desperate need. • Use the reusable cup you bought at Starbucks to save the environment. Keep it in your car so you always have it handy when you are in the mood for a Starbucks.• Keep those reusable grocery bags you bought at the grocery store in your car so you always have them if you go shopping.

Invest in solid wood furniture items & take proper care of them

Buy styles that are timeless

If there are items that have fabric, invest in pieces that are easy to change the fabric. (ie seat cushions can be recovered and futons have covers that are EASY to change)
