Brief Order For Confessionand ForgivenessPlease remain standing

Pastor: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

All: Amen

Pastor: In Christ's dying and rising, we are re-born; we are no longer dead in our sin. Let us return to the shepherd and guardian of our souls, confessing our sin.

If you are able, please kneel -- or you may be seated

Pastor: Almighty God . . .

All: We confess before you our preference for things that pass away, our silence in the face of injustice, our reluctance to accept the free-dom of forgiveness. Make us whole again; renew in us the grace of baptism; and set our minds on the things that are above.

Please remain kneeling

Pastor: God calls us to seek good and to turn away from evil. To those who believe in Jesus Christ, God grants forgiveness of sin, strength in weak-ness, and the promise of eternal salvation.

All: Amen

Opening Hymnplease stand if you are able

1. Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; To his feet your tribute bring.Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,Evermore his praises sing.Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise the everlasting King!

2. Praise him for his grace and favorTo our forebears in distress.Praise him, still the same forever,Slow to chide and swift to bless.Alleluia! Alleluia! Glorious in his faithfulness!

3. Tenderly he shields and spares us;Well our feeble frame he knows. In his hands he gently bears us,Rescues us from all our foes.Alleluia! Alleluia! Widely as his mercy flows.

4. Angels help us to adore him,Who behold him face to face.Sun and moon bow down before him;All who dwell in time and space.Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise with us the God of grace.

Pastor: The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

All: And also with you.

Pastor: Let us pray. . . O God, mighty and immortal, you know that as fragile creatures surrounded by great dangers, we cannot by ourselves stand upright. Give us strength of mind and body, so that even when we suffer because of human sin, we may rise victorious through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

All: Amen.

First Lesson Isaiah 58:9b-14New Revised Standard Version

The Lord promises those who have returned from exile that where justice and mercy prevail, the ruins will be rebuilt and light will rise in the darkness. It is a day for new beginnings.

9b If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, 10 if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday. 11 The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail.

12 Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in. 13 If you refrain from trampling the sabbath, from pursuing your own interests on my holy day; if you call the sabbath a delight and the holy day of the Lord honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, serving your own interests, or pursuing your own affairs; 14 then you shall take delight in the Lord, and I will make you ride upon the heights of the earth;I will feed you with the heritage of your ancestor Jacob, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

Second LessonHebrews 12:18-29New Revised Standard Version

Using images of Moses from the Old Testament, the writer presents a striking vision of the new covenant of God made possible in Christ. There is no longer fear; only awe in the new promise in Christ into which we are invited.

18 You have not come to something that can be touched, a blazing fire, and darkness, and gloom, and a tempest, 19 and the sound of a trumpet, and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that not another word be spoken to them. 20 (For they could not endure the order that was given, “If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned to death.” 21 Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I tremble with fear.”) 22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

25 See that you do not refuse the one who is speaking; for if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much less will we escape if we reject the one who warns from heaven! 26 At that time his voice shook the earth; but now he has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heaven.” 27 This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of what is shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe; 29 for indeed our God is a consuming fire.

PsalmPsalm 103:1-8

Lector: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

All: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits,

Lector: Who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases,

All: Who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,

Lector: Who satisfies you with good as long as you live so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

All: The Lord works vindication and justice for all who are oppressed.

Lector: He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel.

All: The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

Reading of the Gospel Lesson Luke 13:10-17New Revised Standard Version

Jesus heals a woman on the sabbath, offering her a new beginning for her life. When challenged by a narrow reading of the sabbath command, Jesus responds by expanding "sabbath work" to include setting people free from bondage.

10 Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. 11 And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Woman, you are set free from your ailment.” 13 When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. 14 But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, “There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day.”

15 But the Lord answered him and said, “You hypo-crites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water? 16 And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?” 17 When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing.

Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God.

Hymn of the Day

please stand for the hymn

1. How firm a foundation, O saints of the Lord,Is laid for your faith in his excellent Word! What more can he say than to you he has saidWho unto the Savior for refuge have fled?

2. Fear not, I am with you, oh, be not dismayed,For I am your God and will still give you aid:I'll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand,Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.

3. When through fiery trials your pathway shall lie,My grace, all sufficient, shall be your supply. The flames shall not hurt you; I only designYour dross to consume and your gold to refine.

4. Throughout all their lifetime my people shall proveMy sov'reign, eternal, unchangeable love; And then, when gray hairs shall their temples adorn,Like lambs they shall still in my bosom be borne.

Eucharistic Prayer

Pastor: All glory and honor to you, God of grace, for you gave your only Son Jesus Christ once for all on the cross to be the one perfect sacrifice for the sin of the world, that all who believe in him might have eternal life.

All: Amen, Come Lord Jesus.

Pastor: In the night in which he was betrayed our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples saying: Take and eat; this is my body given for you. Do this for the remem-brance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Therefore heavenly Father, in this sacrament of the suffering and death of your Son, we now celebrate the wonder of your grace and your saving presence in our lives.

All: Amen

Pastor: Let us now pray with confidence the words our Saviour gave us:

All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;and forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us;and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

Closing hymn

1. My hope is built on nothing lessThan Jesus’ blood and righteousness; No merit of my own I claim,But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.

2. When darkness veils his lovely face,I rest on his unchanging grace; In ev’ry high and stormy galeMy anchor holds within the veil.

3. His oath, his covenant, his bloodSustain me in the raging flood; When all supports are washed away,He then is all my hope and stay.

4. When he shall come with trumpet sound,Oh, may I then in him be found,Clothed in his righteousness alone,Redeemed to stand before the throne!

Leader: Go in peace, serve the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God.

Vacation Bible School was a big success this year – because of how the community gathered to support it.

Special THANK YOU to the team of 33 folks from St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Bloomington and Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Roseville, MN who ran this year's program.

We had LOTS of children and adults who participated in the VBS activities and other members of the con-gregation who served as volunteers.

Thank you to all the volunteers and to all who made donations to the program. We could not have done it without you.

Air Mattresses (thank you all) can be picked up today in Pastor Bob's office. They are labeled.

a VBS thank you !

The Perfect church . . . for those who aren’t !

This year marks our 95th year of ministry in Queens. Orga-nized in 1923, Our Saviour Lutheran Church includes people from 26 nations of origin, gathered together to celebrate in Word and Sacrament the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to root our hope in the power of the Good News.

As a people who have been touched by God’s love in Jesus Christ, we respond by giving our lives in friendship and service.

We are: A Joyful people ! A Diverse people ! Gathered for worship ! Scattered for ministry !Welcome !
