‘We are not saying ‘good bye’ to our classrooms; we are opening them up.’ Simon Beames, Outdoor Educa3on Lecturer, Edinburgh University “It is a kind of a choice but its outside not in. Kind of like choice @me. From outdoor learning its out. The classes come all together they make kind of choices that children like, stuff like that. It’s the same as indoor learning but it’s out so it’s outdoor learning.“ Sakura “It's something that you can play and you can learn lots of games.” Cianah “It’s outside. It’s like playing outside and you can play with your friends.” Connor “Playing doing some good stuff and no figh@ng. And being nice to our friends and play together. We can read together and be nice.” Maxx “Playing. The teachers are out there and they make it more fun because they have more equipment out there. The teachers are out and they have paper planes and the teachers have like they have fun games like roll it under and the last person goes to the front.” BenneQ “Like you play stuff ‘cause the teacher says what you can choose and you can choose your own stuff. We make the parachute, then we find the numbers and we play tag games and we also do the sandpit and volcanoes. That was the first @me we did it.” Carter “We play outside. We play games outside. My favourite is playpod. It is like a garage with a lot of toys.” Taiyo “It’s like you’re playing outside. You can do whatever you want when you do recess. There’s projects when you do outdoor learning.” Emmy “So outdoor learning is a @me you can go outside with different teachers and do ac@vi@es. Fun ones.” Meitri “Outdoor learning is somewhere you would play like go to different parts and build the playpod and build in other areas. In our other play @me the play pod isn’t available.” Kalani “We year 1 is only ones that got outdoor learning. Making new things and going outside. It’s like doing something like ac@vi@es.” Claire & Plum “Outdoor learning is fun stuff because you get to play and do ac@vi@es and you also have fun and you play and make new friends too. That’s it. “ Hallel “Outdoor learning is when you get together and play different types of things you never play before. When teachers set out all different ac@vi@es and we can choose one of them with a friend or we can make a new friend. That’s what outdoor learning is.” Hannah

‘We  are  not  saying  ‘good  bye’  to  our  classrooms;  we  are  opening  them  up.’  -‐Simon  Beames,  Outdoor  Educa3on  Lecturer,  Edinburgh  University

“It  is  a  kind  of  a  choice  but  its  outside  not  in.  Kind  of  like  choice  @me.  From  outdoor  learning  its  out.  The  classes  come  all  together  they  make  kind  of  choices  that  children  like,  stuff  like  that.  It’s  the  same  as  indoor  learning  but

it’s  out  so  it’s  outdoor  learning.“  -‐Sakura

“It's    something  that  you  can  play  and  you  can  learn  lots  of  games.”  -‐Cianah

“It’s  outside.  It’s  like  playing  outside  and  you  can  play  with  your  friends.”  -‐Connor

“Playing  doing  some  good  stuff  and  no  figh@ng.  And  being  nice  to  our  friends  and  play  together.  We  can  read  together  and  be  nice.”  -‐Maxx

“Playing.  The  teachers  are  out  there  and  they  make  it  more  fun  because  they  have  more  equipment  out  there.  The  teachers  are  out  and  they  have  paper  planes  and  the  teachers  have  like  they  have  fun  games  like  roll  it

under  and  the  last  person  goes  to  the  front.”  -‐BenneQ

“Like  you  play  stuff  ‘cause  the  teacher  says  what  you  can  choose  and  you  can  choose  your  own  stuff.  We  make  the  parachute,  then  we  find  the  numbers  and  we  play  tag  games  and  we  also  do  the  sandpit  and

volcanoes.  That  was  the  first  @me  we  did  it.”  -‐Carter

“We  play  outside.  We  play  games  outside.  My  favourite  is  playpod.  It    is  like  a  garage  with  a  lot  of  toys.”  -‐Taiyo

“It’s  like  you’re  playing  outside.  You  can  do  whatever  you  want  when  you  do  recess.  There’s  projects  when  you  do  outdoor  learning.”  -‐Emmy

“So  outdoor  learning  is  a  @me  you  can  go  outside  with  different  teachers  and  do  ac@vi@es.  Fun  ones.”  -‐Meitri

“Outdoor  learning  is  somewhere  you  would  play  like  go  to  different  parts  and  build  the  playpod  and  build  in  other  areas.  In  our  other  play  @me  the  play  pod  isn’t  available.”  -‐Kalani

“We  year  1  is  only  ones  that  got  outdoor  learning.  Making  new  things  and  going  outside.  It’s  like  doing  something  like

ac@vi@es.”  -‐Claire  &  Plum

“Outdoor  learning  is  fun  stuff  because  you  get  to  play  and  do  ac@vi@es  and  you  also  have  fun  and  you  play  and  make  new

friends  too.  That’s  it.  “  -‐Hallel

“Outdoor  learning  is  when  you  get  together  and  play  different  types  of  things  you  never  play  before.  When  teachers  set  out  all  different  ac@vi@es  and  we  can  choose  one  of  them  with  a  friend  or  we  can  make  a  new  friend.  That’s  what  outdoor

learning  is.”  -‐Hannah

“Playing  and  learning  outside  also  helps  children  to  understand  and  respect  nature,  the  environment  and  the  interdependence  of  humans,  animals,  plants,  and  lifecycles.”  “Outdoor  play  also  supports  children’s  problem-‐solving  skills  and  nurtures  their  crea?vity,  as  well  as  providing  rich  opportuni?es  for  their  developing  imagina?on,  inven?veness  and  resourcefulness.”  “Learning  outside  the  classroom  supports  the  development  of  healthy  and  ac?ve  lifestyles  by  offering  children  opportuni?es  for  physical  ac?vity,  freedom  and  movement,  and  promo?ng  a  sense  of  well-‐being.”

-‐UK  Council  of  Learning  Outside  the  Classroom

“Yes  because  then  we  wont  have  really  3me  to  run  around  to  get  some  sport  so  it’s  important.”  -‐Sakura

“Yes  because  it’s  fun.  Because  then  you  can  make  new  friends.”    -‐Cianah

“Yes  so  we  can  play  with  our  friends.”  -‐Connor

“Yes  because  it’s  fun.”  -‐Maxx

“Yes  ‘cause  it  helps  you  to  get  more  exercise.  The  games  are  fun.  So  if  you  don’t  have  fun  at  school  and  you  have  to  go  to  another  school  and  you  miss  this  school.”  -‐BenneF

“Yes  ‘cause  we  get  to  play  and  get  to  make  our  choices.  Choices  are  important  because  it’s  fun.”  -‐  Carter

“We  have  fun.”  -‐Taiyo

“Yes.  Because  it’s  s3ll  part  of  school.  Because  you  always  don’t  have  to  stay  in  the  classroom  and  do  what  the  teacher  says.”

-‐Emmy

“Yes.  Well  it’s  sort  of  some  3me  where  you  get  to  run  free.  So  you  don’t  always  have  to  sit  on  the  carpet  you  don’t

always  have  to  be  inside.”  -‐Kalani

“So  other  kids  can  have  fun  outside.  Because  if  it’s  normal  play    there  are  no  ac3vi3es,  if  it’s  outdoor  learning  there  are  ac3vi3es.  It’s  like  a    mixture  of  play  and  ac3vi3es.”  -‐

Meitri

“Because  its  fun  and  we  have  so  much  things  to  do.  We  like  to  do  some  people’s  classroom  like  Mr  Adam  is  fun.  It  is  bugs  it’s  fun  and  cool.  I  like  going  to  Miss  Mimi’s  class  because  it’s  fun,  like  boats  or  crowns.”    -‐Plum  &  Claire

“Yes  because  it’s  also  learning  about  things  and  it’s  also  fun  in  outdoor  learning  because  it’s  learning  new  things.  “

-‐Hallel

“Because  you  can  make  new  friends  and  you  can  play  with  them.”  -‐Hannah
