LEDs provide big advantages for lighting users: low energy, long life and less environmental impact. For outdoor lighting, these benefits are particularly important and GE has developed a comprehensive range that enables users of outdoor lighting to make the most of the LED revolution. This guide shows the range and its benefits.

More about GE LEDs 34

Page 4: Outdoor LED Luminaires Brochure 2011

GE Lighting was the original innovator of the first commercial LED in 1962 and today is one of the largest LED systems companies in the world, covering applications such as transportation, signage, outdoor area lighting, and retail display lighting. Its credits include more than 7.62 million metres of LED linear lighting with a warranty return rate of less than 0.05%.

Proof of our successIn the 2009 Lighting Design Award our Vio™ LED technology was recognised by the judges as ‘a major advance in colour stability’. GE also received ‘Best in Class’ awards in 2008 and 2009 at the Next Generation Luminaires competition sponsored by the US Department of Energy, for retail and outdoor LED products.

The LED phenomenon

4

Page 5: Outdoor LED Luminaires Brochure 2011

Save energyLED light engines use 30-60% less energy than other light sources, with no loss of light output, which represents considerable cost savings as well as major reductions of greenhouse emissions. Furthermore, LED technology allows designers to create fittings that utilise light far more efficiently, delivering light uniformly and only where it is needed, with minimal glare.

Long lifeWith 50,000 hours of life, LEDs can last up to 4 times longer than other light sources, which means reduced maintenance costs. During the life of an LED luminaire a comparable metal halide fitting would be relamped four times. Electrical gear on an LED system may need servicing as little as once during this time.

Colour performanceLED light engines provide light quality that is second to none, with a CRI value of over 70 that yields high quality colour rendering. This enables realistic colours to be seen when objects are lit at night - a big advantage for architectural and security lighting. And, importantly, colour quality is maintained right to the end of the LED’s rated life.

EnvironmentLEDs require less material to manufacture them and their extended life means far less frequent replacement. And when it finally comes to disposal, the hazardous waste considerations of mercury-free LEDs are far fewer than with other light sources.

Light pollution is also greatly reduced, as the superior optics of LED fittings means light goes only where it is required. LEDs are also more controllable, with ‘instant on’ switching and dimmability.

5

Page 6: Outdoor LED Luminaires Brochure 2011

As you would expect from an organisation with over a century of technological heritage, GE believes that the imaginative use of technology plays an important part in solving the environmental challenges that face the modern world.

GE has many technical innovations to its name and in the field of lighting these include the first incandescent lamp, fluorescent tube and halogen lamp.

There is no company better qualified to lead the lighting industry’s challenge to reduce environmental impact.

Facing the challenge

6

Page 7: Outdoor LED Luminaires Brochure 2011

This philosophy is embodied in ecomaginationsm, GE’s initiative to create a better quality of life for all the world’s citizens and create long-lasting environmental solutions through the use of technology. ecomaginationsm is at the core of many of GE’s technologies and GE Lighting has made a major contribution with high efficiency products right across the range.

But there is more to it than efficiency. GE aims to produce products which have the least possible environmental impact during production and also when their useful life is finished. There is no better example of these qualities than the LED – conceived by GE in 1962. Efficient and exceptionally long lasting, it has no mercury content and presents a far lower risk for disposal and recycling than many other light sources.

7

Page 8: Outdoor LED Luminaires Brochure 2011

The four dimensions of LED efficiency

The outdoor environment is complex and demanding for lighting. Not only are there the physical demands of weather and the city environment but outdoor luminaires must also perform as efficiently as possible to reduce energy use and keep publicly funded costs as low as can be achieved. Furthermore, outdoor lighting must provide a safe and secure night-time environment in cities that operate 24/7.

LED lighting, together with careful product engineering, is GE’s biggest ally in meeting these needs. It is a solution that has been developed on four levels – the four dimensions of LED efficiency.

GE LED fixtures have carefully designed optics that ensure that light only goes where it is needed.

This reduces wastage and cuts down light pollution. In addition to the quality of the optics, GE also focuses on providing a wide choice of optics so that lighting designers can light many different types of application as efficiently as possible.

Optical

• Variety of light distributions

• Excellent cut-off

• Horizontal and vertical uniformity

• Unique reflector design

The GE LED EngineAt the heart of GE’s high efficiency LED luminaires is GE’s unique LED Light Engine, an Optical Ring system in which LEDs and optics work together to provide lighting performance that is second to none. LEDs are placed precisely on the reflector surface in order to maximise the efficiency of the required light distribution, delivering light only where it is needed. A specially designed heat sink ensures that the efficiency of the system is maximised.

• Good, even, vertical illumination.

• Excellent method for meeting light trespass requirements.

• Maintains photometric patterns in the event of discreet LED failures.

• Allows customised photometric patterns, unlike refractive light optics.

• Avoids the need for silicon fillers inside individual lenses which are less reliable and require extra material cost.

• Reduces glare; the eye only sees light from the few LEDs pointing in the viewer’s direction.

Managing heatThe management of heat plays an important part in the performance of a luminaire. Heat sinks inside fittings, together with outer surface areas equipped with features such as heat fins, ensure that luminaires are as heat-efficient as possible. In addition, interior layout is always carefully planned by GE engineers to minimise heat build-up.

13

Page 14: Outdoor LED Luminaires Brochure 2011

LED outdoor lighting systems from GE are designed as a long term commitment to efficiency and low maintenance.

By creating products that are versatile and have a wide range of applications, GE’s engineers ensure that they will deliver efficient service, wherever they are used. GE LED light sources enable the design of highly efficient optical systems that only light the desired area. The less precise control of larger, non-LED light sources often results in light spillage.

Also, the extreme long life of the LED light source – typically 50,000 hours - drastically reduces the time and cost of maintenance compared to other light sources.

• Variety of light sources

• Long life for low maintenance

• Light is distributed only where it is required

• Full compliance with EU standards

While the efficiency of GE LED systems is paramount, they are conceived with the complete environmental audit trail in mind, including manufacturing and disposal.

The WEEE and RoHS directives place a responsibility on manufacturers to minimise the environmental impact of the construction and disposal of electrical products and among other things they address concerns about mercury entering the environment. GE LEDs contain no mercury or glass, which greatly reduces the burden of disposal or recycling.

More about GE LEDsThe GE LED range encompasses the whole spectrum of lighting applications, indoors and outdoors, including a wide range of retrofit lamps.

The GE LED lighting catalogue ‘Efficiency, pure and simple’ contains detailed information about the entire range, which includes:

Retrofit Lamps

GE’s innovative LED retrofit lamps offer substantial opportunities to reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs. These lamps are true retrofits that enable dramatic reductions in cost of ownership.

LED Professional Lighting Solutions

GE LEDs have opened up a huge range of possibilities for lighting product designers. They enable precise light control, and the reduced heat output compared to other light sources is also a big advantage.

LED Retail Solutions

GE LEDs provide an excellent light source for the retail environment. They enable precise control of light and have very low heat emissions, reducing the cost of air conditioning and protecting heat-sensitive displays.

Architecture

GE believes that environmental responsibility and beautiful architectural design can exist simultaneously. GE’s architectural LED systems give lighting designers creative flexibility and at the same time offer enormous energy savings.
