C Bench, Design Peter Donders, Belgiumlimited edition 10 pieces + 2 prototypes

The Belgian designer created this contemporary, organic piece by twisting a single string of carbon fibre around a form that was then removed. The resulting structure is airy yet incredibly strong and has been aptly described as ”calligraphy in 3D” by Rob Cassy of the Garden Design Journal. Currently the ultimate material available in terms of weight to strength ratio, carbon fiber is used to produce Formula One race cars, the highest quality sporting equipment, as well as the chassis of space crafts. This exceptional limited edition series will be limited to 10 pieces and is suitable for both public and private spaces.

Batoidea, Design Peter Donders, Belgium

Aptly named for the genus of fish which includes the elegant stingray, Batoidea is an extraordinary example of design and technology. Fluid and airy the chair defies practical conventions.

The technique for the 3d printed sand mold is the same one used to produce the internal core of the Ferrari engine. The finish resembles the Ferrari as well, Batoi-dea is painted using the same method and quality control as the famous sports car. Once again Peter Donders has stretched the possibilities of design with his technical expertise, and created a timeless piece of furniture.

Batoidea is also available as a chaise longue.

Stretch Collection, Design Jessica Carnevale, England/USA

With her debut collection “Stretch”, Jessica brings the exube-rance of the fashion world into her designs, mixing textures, ma-terials and patterns. She experimented with a number of different materials before choosing latex, bungee and rope for their bright colors and wondrous elasticity which provides a comfortable and flexible seating surface. Built by Jessica in her studio in Brooklyn she made a simple, artful chair to better frame the compositions that she created. The result is a collection of four vivid pieces which work beautifully on their own but are so much more fun mixed and matched- in your choice of combinations.

Cortica, Design Daniel Michalik, USA

The beauty of Cortica is in its simplicity. Hand made in Daniel’s Brooklyn studio, this chaise longue is made completely from cork that is recycled from the bottle stopper industry. Cork has tremendous potential to perform in ways unlike any other mate-rial, as well as being an environmentally responsible material. It is lightweight, naturally waterproof and buoyant. (yes, it floats !) This piece shows it’s ability to bend in two directions simultaneously. The pliability of the cork allows the user of this lounge to rock gently from side to side or backward and forward with a great degree of stability. The result is a sensation of floating weightless yet totally supported. With proper care, Cortica is a piece that will last a lifetime. Care instructions are included.

Master metal sculptor Caroline Corbeau’s latest work pays hommage to Gustave Eiffel and his most celebrated metal structure- the Eiffel Tower.A work of fine laser cuts and geometric forms, Sifel is a chair with multiple facets in both its structure and the more ephe-meral play of shadows it casts. Each chair is hand crafted by Caroline in her atelier outside of Paris.Though design and form have been given high priority the most important aspect of the Sifel Chaise is its function as a comfor-table chair. (a place to reflect on moments in Paris perhaps ?)

Recently on show at the «Best Seats on Broadway» exhibition at Times Square, N.Y., Chaise Lawn blurs the line between sculpture and furniture. Grass seeds included, but the Chaise Lawn also looks great planted with wild flowers or aromatic herbs. Chaise Lawn is currently on exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Mu-seum in New York City.

Cactus Chair, Design Deger Cengiz, USA

A provocative new design from Deger Cengiz, Cactus Chair examines how visual data affects the users experience. The existence of the large cactus elicits an emotional response, it is temporarily discomforting, a challenge. Though the user knows that the cactus is behind the glass and is not an actual threat he experiences a slight hesitation. Both tempted to sit and tempted to avoid the experience, Cactus Chair is an exciting new piece from Deger Cengiz that challenges our perceptions of furniture and design.

Materials: green tinted high quality plexi-glass, Barrel Cactus (included), river stones

Carousel, Design Adam Goodrum, Australialimited edition of 12 + 1 prototype, made in France

Award winning Australian designer Adam Goodrum gives us a contemporary re styling of the classic Louis XVI console, by revi-siting its codes for a piece which is at once modern, playful and practical :- Corian, the early 21st century noble material par excellence replaces mahogany- the table top takes the form of the characteristic half moon shape- the fluted legs are figured by multicoloured lacquered steel rods.

These rods project joyful spots onto the immaculate tabletop and form three elegant and colourful rounds that evoke the Carousel of our childhood, thereby giving their name to our console.

According to Adam Goodrum, Carousel uses the juxtaposition of the colourful vertical elements with the planar geometry of the tabletop to show the transition from the playfulness of childhood to the practicality necessary in everyday life.

Bench no 3, Design Floris Wubben, Netherlands

The graceful lines of Bench No. 3 bring to mind a wave casca-ding over driftwood or as Rob Cassey from England’s prestigious Garden Design Journal puts it « This is an incredibly beautiful and potentially iconic object that reminds me both of Issey Miyake’s work and Rie Kawakubo’s, with the odd bit of Zaha Hadid thrown in without being the least bit derivative. «

The undulating pattern is achieved by accordion folding a sheet of white polypropylene and attaching it to the wood with white lacquered metal bars. As a result the top of the bench is given its shape directly from its support, the wooden branch. It is just this combination of natural and hi tech materials that make this piece so striking. Each bench is produced by hand in Floris’ studio, and is as unique as the branch which serves as the base. A comfor-table bench to sit on the top portion easily supports one’s weight. A perfect place to enjoy a view, though perhaps the most striking view is of this unique bench itself.

Blue Rope Meltdown, Tom Price, UK

The Meltdown Series is the result of an experimental process developed by Tom Price, which uses a variety of common-place plastic products to create a strikingly diverse collection of sculptural seating. Drawing on techniques from his background in both fine art and design, Tom Price applies new concepts of craftsmanship in an act of wilful manipulation and material inven-tiveness.

Despite its sculptural appearance, there is a concern for functio-nality and comfort. The mould of the seat is based on the familiar generic shape of an Eames chair. The juxtaposition of a moder-nist, mass-produced shape into a hand-crafted chair reinforces its functionality.

The PP Blue Rope Meltdown Chair is created by heating and pressing a seat-shaped former into a ball of polypropylene rope. The rope begins to liquify as it comes into contact with the heated former and, as it cools, it sets in the shape of a seat creating a contrast in form and texture to the remaining rope. No additional material has been added to make the seat - it is all made from melted rope.

Le Tabouret, design Damien Hamon & Olivier Papet, France

For far too long millions of old windows have been forgotten, buried in tips, only 10% being recycled into chip-board. This being the case, Damien and Olivier, thanks to their complemen-tary skills, are proposing a new alternative so that the abando-ned windows may be transformed into sophisticated furniture. Combining craft know-how, design and industry, valorising the material, soliciting local actors, guaranteeing transparency of the production line and offering quality products. The creators are succeeding by transcending the functional to attain elegance : proof is in the body and finish.

Le Tabouret functions as either a stool or small table. The indi-vidually cut window frames offer a unique profile as each frame is different. The colors have been faded by time and often the many layers of colors, of the past, are apparent. Made in France, the frames come from historic chateaux, country cottages, Paris apartments. Gathered together with a specially made leather belt the functional Tabouret is a modern design with a built in history. Material: recycled wooden window frames

Ondine design Michael Bihain and Cedric Callewaert, Belgium

Laureate of the Parck Design competition, Ondine is the fruit of a close collaboration between designer Michael Bihain and Belgian architect Cedric Callewaert. Ondine’s main concept is its capa-city to subject its viewer, or user to multiple interpretations: it is both sculpture and bench.

Its organic curves and its modularity offer a wide range of seating possibilities permitting it to continually adapt to various settings, urban, cultural and rural.

Holzbank design Thomas Schnur, Germany

Primarily in forests and villages, conventional wooden benches are a common phenomenon. Crafted from untreated tree trunks, every one of them is handmade and unique. Inspired by the ho-nesty and simplicity of this man-made object, this is a bench that in terms of appearance, shape and materials retains the funda-mental qualities of the traditional wooden bench. An optimized, standardized processing technique reinterprets the wooden bench and gives it access to the urban environment..

Made from sustainable larch wood the bench is resistant to mildew, rot and mushrooms. The color will gradually turn a lovely silver gray. In Russia the wood from larch has for centuries been used where decay resistance is required. Larch logs are the tra-dional wood used for Siberian log cabins.

Reminiscent of the Japanese art of origami, Icila is made from a single sheet of steel, cut and folded, without welds. The extra wide seat offers a comfortable position and lea-ves space on either side to pose a drink, put down a bag, make room for a friend. The supple steel frame has a spring like affect which is amplified when placed on a hard surface. The solid weight and stability are a suprising paradox to the slim, elegant profile.

Icila has been created using a bare minimum of industrial in-terventions. Cut and folded from a single sheet of steel there is virtually no wasted material. Using the latest eco-technology the surface treatment and brilliant palette of paper white, black gra-phite, orange-red and varnished natural steel are produced from a vegetable base and permit both longevity and little environmental impact.
