First was the Broadway Braai, which was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all those present. Our thanks are due to Allen Lucas, Dick Ray and their dedicated team of assistants who always work so hard to make this event so pleasurable, and also for the donation to our funds. Our thanks are also due to Group 4 for extending the use of their facilities to us. It has to be pointed out that this event is not organiscd by your Committee and, as such, is a private function. This is why it is not fully advertised, as the organisers have to know in advance ivho will be attending. Also accommodation, particularly double rooms, is very limited and is given out on a strict "first come-first served" basis, so requests for accommodation should be just that- NOT demands!! The Annual Dinner with our ladies was a great success with almost 140 guests present. The hotel service and food may not have been perfect, but this was more than made up for by the good cheer and lively conversations experienced both before, during and after the formal festivities. Our guest speaker, Peter Godwin, a former NSPO, struck a chord with many of us, with his descriptions of Depot. He provoked some amusement with tales of his squad instructor, who turned out to be none other than Peter "Pop" Ellis. Our guest was mobbed by many of those present aAerwards, for his autograph and to find out where his book could be obtained, The good news is that he has applied to join the Branch and we look forward to welcoming him. Our thanks are also due to your Committee, particularly Mike Leach and Tim Weimer and to Tommy Griffith for locating the venue, which was very convenient for many of us. Our rafIIc, again organised by Peter Ellis, raised the magnificent sum of K3065.00, which included a substantial donation from one of our members. This has enabled us to have a "function fund" of about f2000. 00 for the future, after paying out the prizes and expenses. Our thanks to Peter and to all of you who so generously supported us. Our Xmas gathering takes place on Tuesday 3«December at Trenchard House, London from about 5.30pm and we hope that many of you will be able to attend. It is open to friends and families of members, with snacks and very inexpensive libations. See you there. It just remains to wish you all, wherever you may be a very merry Xmas and a happy, prosperous and healthy 1997 from the Editor, production and distribution staff of the Outpost. We look forward to keeping you "in contact" in the coming year. The Chairman and Executive Committee of the British South Africa Police Regimental Association, United Kingdom Branch, wish all members a Happy Festive Season and a Peaceful and Prosperous 1997

WHICH IS BEST, HORSE OR BIKE?

by Ncal Arden 3004

Sometime during that difficult periodbetwceii 1940 and 1945, when workingwith the BBC's old African Service ofhappy memory, I taught some colleagues toride a motor bike.

The radio progranune "London Call-ing", came on short wave not actually fromLondon but from the place where we wereevacuated, an ancient pile called AbbeyManor near Evesham. We were billetedaround the countryside, there was nonpublic transport but although most of ushad pedal hikes, no onc in my section couldride a motor bike - except me.

Petrol vvas very nearly unobtainable somy lessons on hoiv to control the beast hadto be given using minimum consumption.Being young (ish1 and still able to proceedat a slow run for short distances, I ranalongside thc moving bikcs bellowing in-structions. Mostly, thc riders proceeded at adignified 6 to 8 mph. When I felt the nccdto rest, I asked one man to go "a littlefaster" and sat on the grassy bank to watch. With that, he opened tlie throttle andaccelerated up to some 50 mph. He didn' t

kill himself - but the L plates flew off. These simple exercises werc, unknown

to me, observed by a very superior andimportant person and, as a result of my"obvious leadership qualities", I was pro-moted to a responsible rank in The AfricanService.

So how, you ask, did I learn to drive amotor cycle myself? It was in Rhodesiawhen stationed at Umtali. The wet seasonhad been unusuallv wct that year and there

had been a landslide on the railway about

ten miles from HQ just before you gct to

Masceqase. I was dispatched in full

mounted equipntent - favell, it was HQ - to

control such sightsccrs as inight be around,

though thc crowds &vere not really dense,

just a few Mashoiui and thc odd farntcr who

wished to sce an engine lying on its side.Thcrc vvas time to admire thc view.

Soon I heard a train whistle coming/from the Umtali side so I walked back Wthe track to way lay the driver. There was

no radio in those glamorous days; commu-

nications were by word of mouth or native

runner with a letter in a forked stick. I

warned the driver what was around the next

corner and, very sensibly, hc reversed tlie

train and nipped smartly back to Umtali. All this took a bit of time and when I

got back to the horse, another member had

turned up on a motor bike with orders to

relieve me for a meal. I said this was a kind

thought but clearly I couldn't return to

camp, have a meal and gct back to the area

in less than three or four hours. Not on ahorse. "OK," said this helpful chap, "Just

take my bike. "At that time I'd never ridden a motor-

bike and knew not which knob did what,

how to make it go forward, or indeed, stop.I said as much. "Well, " he said, "can youride a pushbike?" Of course. "Then it' ll be

easy. You run alongside to start the engine, then you mount - just like a horse. Simple.

"I suppose, though at this distance of

time it*s hard to bc sure, the bike vvas one ofthose early Douglas models - the samename as our RSM at Depot the well-lovedJock Douglas. Anyway, it had none of yourmodern controls, just a lever on thc handle-bar to work the throttle and another forignition. I don't remember if it had anygears or was belt-driven, probably the lat-ter. Anyway, having got the general idea, Idid a short circuit round the veldt, passedhis examination and roared off.

Well, when I say "roared*', I really wentat quite a gentle pace.

At that time there were fcw roads, mainly cart tracks made permanent by useand you simply rode along one. Muchnearer thc ground than I was accustomedto, my bump ol direction fell apart. The sunvvas behind the clouds so I couldn't tellwhich was north but rode direct. Anyway, Ididn't know if this "'road" would go toUmtali or skirt around it and go viaChristmas Pass which was on the wrongside of thc tovvn.

0 Still, in depot, we'd been taught thai&cult things must be done at once though

the impossible might take a little longer. This trip came into the latter category.F'ortunately, I didn't get a puncture as I didon another occasion when, considering my-«If an experienced biker, I had bought abike to take me on leave to see a charminglady in Melsetter. Then, I had simplystuffed the outer cover with grass andcarried on. That is the old pioneering spiritof course, even thought the dry grass turnedinto chaff within a mile.

But back to our story. In the fullness oftime I arrived at Umtali, ltad a meal and bynow full of confidence, set off on the returnJourney. Bikes were not on issue but pri-vately owned. By this time it was pretty lateand my friend yvas marching up and downcursing his folly in letting me have thething so as to make my journey quicker.Quicker'? Heavens, I could have covered thesame distance by horse, at a walk, and stillhave been back at the landslide sooner.

When I did get there, it was dark. Andthe horse was hungry too.

So that's how, several lyears later, Icame to be running around in Englandshouting instructions to people xvho hopedto learn how to ride a motor bike. Oddlyenough the exercise vvas successful andlater, they all bought motor bikes of theirown. Which proves the old proverb, "Noth-ing succeeds like success. "

Yct another Hararc function was the"Old Timers" Golf Competition. The svritcrmanaged to disgrace himself by appcaring-on a nice ivarm Sunday morning - in openneck shirt, shorts and conservative stock-ings. I svondered xvhy, when I cntcred theupstairs lounge, several faces became thesame colour as their osvners' hair, and onlyon going downstairs did I scc the sign thatsaid "Shorts are not permitted".

The trousered brigade included PeterTomlinson, Dave Pratt, Alan Rich, AleeBlair, Jack Hammond, Gcrry Gibson, MikeRobinson 5162, Buck Buchanan, JamieTennant, Alistair Black, Tackie and DonMacintosh 4777 and 9889, Mike Jollivet9344, Peter Emvright, George Gibbons4357, John McCallum 6455, Clive Arnoldand Peter Logue 8737.

THAT WAS THE NIGHT

by No 3385

Thc recent press report about thc ladytraffic offender who entertained the twopolice officers with tea and biscuits vvhenbeing arrested, reminds mc of this truestory which took place at a Rhodesianoutpost in the mid 1930s.

Belingwe, on the edge of beyond, isabout 120 miles equidistant from bothBulawayo and Gwelo. Rhodesia's largestAfrican Reserve with its 18 Chiefs, reachedendlessly southwards towards the LimpopoRiver on the one side. On the other, therewere dozens of active goldmining small-workers in the bushland towards the North.

The settlement, named after Mt Ber-engive nearby, comprised a very basic Po-lice Camp, unchanged since it divas builtround the turn of the century. There vvas anhotel, a general dealer's store run by oneMr Clem Paley, the African Affairs (NativeDepartment) and Magistrate's Court com-plex and two other residential houses com-pleting the settlement including tenniscourts maintained by the usual "bandits".

The Police Camp's main building was asingle storey affair. A large barrackroomwas the troops' quarters adjoined to the tinycharge office plus a semi-detached bath-room and kitchen, European married quar-ters divas a stone's throw avvay and on theother side there were stables, the Policelock-up and African Police Lines under thecharge of the eminent A/Sgt Mgwena.

Sergeant Graham Sydney Ablitt Rolfe2934 vvas Member i/c vvith TroopersLummy Lumholtz 3385, who fortuitouslywas in Bulawayo at the time on GMCoverhaul, Jimmy Harrison Kirk 3410 andLeslie Christopher Lochee-Bayne 3556.Camp security was unbelievably non-exist-ent at that period. Nothing was locked upexcept the office safe and arinoury, holdingancient Lce Enfield Boer War rifles, whichdoubled as Camp Dispensary. The troopsquarters were open to all xvinds day andnight, for coolness.

However, onc night towards midnight, the two troopers' sleep was urgently dis-turbed by A/Sgt Mgwcna with a note fromthe hotel requesting immediate Police at-tention to remove a violent European whorefused to leave the bar. Swiftly donning afew articles of clothing and caps to giveelements of basic authority, the two troop-ers appeared at the hotel bar to confront awell-knovvn gold mining character namedJapie van Rendsburg busilv telling MrPaley what hc thought of him for wantingto chuck him out. Unperturbed by thearrival of authority hc eventually agrccd toaccompany them away but only after stand-ing them both to a pint each. Never a rulewithout an exception both felt this vvas justsuch an appropriate occasion. After this, thc alinost non compos mentis Van wasinore or less carried back and put to sleep ina locked Police cell on a bedboard with ablanket. Both troops then returned toresume sleep.

But not for long. At four in the morn-ing, the quietness ivas shattered by thenoise of thc cell door being smashed open.Van was using the bedboard as a batteringram, making his way to the single quartersshouting, "Who thc hell locked mc up!"Our two troops hurriedly decided that dis-cretion vvas the better part of valour andfeigned sleep. Van staggered into the roombut seeing a bcd invitingly made up,promptly fell on it and into a siioring sleep,

The cookbov's astonishment when teawas brought in that morning could ~veil beimagined, but at Belingwe in those days, one got used to most things. On thisoccasion, Van agreed to take himself off tothe Court after having a good breakfastwith the two troops. Amazement was regis-tered among officials in the Court vvhereVan pleaded guilty to a charge of causing adisturbance in terms of the Liquor Act onLicenced Premises and fined K5. On top ofthis, he was required to pay f.10 for damag-ing government property, details of whichwere not disclosed in the record of caselater submitted to the AG's department inSalisbury,

VISITSLast July, Dick RAY 5075 managed to

combine a business trip with many pleasantreunions. "Arriving at Jan Smuts, one hourin the transit lounge soon passed phoning5217 Nigel HARRIS to arrange a later visitto the Cape, and to 5272 Pat DEASEY.Then on to Gaberones where, after a gap ofalmost 28 years, I met and had lunch with5342 Peter JACKSON and his wife Naomi.Driving North (the night mail stoppedrunning 10 years before!) to Francistown, Ibooked into the motel on the Tati river andnoted that 5780 Mark DOYLE had beenthere the previous night. I did catch up withMark later on. On to Plumtree where Irc-visited our first married quarters, stilloccupied, but to all appearances ignored byPWD since Jenny and I left there in 1963!In Bulawayo at UTC to change cars, I wasgreeted with "Hi Ginger" from 5206 PeteTUCKER with whom the mess at Filabusihad been shared in 1958/59. (Far morecredit to his memory than the colour of myhair these days} Visited, but missed 4459Pete SOUTH who vvas having a day off! Then on to 7591 Rob MacDONALD'sInduna Lodge ivhere I stayed 3 nights. Theaccommodation and hospitality are highlyrecommended. Rob's father, 5247 KenMacDONALD and Glynis returned from a2Y2 month trip to RSA that day. I had beenKen's best man and he is Godfather to myson. Ken had been hit by a car in CapeTown whilst crossing the street. Fortunatelyhc seemed to have come out of it better thanthe car by all accounts! There's quality foryou! Ken took me around and includeddinner at the Bulawayo Club with 5983John McMANMON. Whilst there I met2537 Aussie ROGERS who is remarkablyfit and well at 93 years young. The next dayin the course of vvork I popped into WestNicholson Police Station and could notresist a visit to my old office. Thc SectionOfficer was amazed to learn that he wasonly one year old when I was stationed.there in 1964. He showed me round thecamp, which had a few changes since my

days there. I was impressed with the stand-ard of maintenance and station turn+'Ken met me at Gwanda that afternoon ainudrove me in his 4-wheeled drive Toyota toTuli whcrc wc camped at the wild life campestablished by Paul Savage on the banks ofthe Shashi. The next day we crossed intothe Tuli Circle and visited the Pioneer andBoer War forts and thc Pioneer cemetery. All in very good shape! Next I flew toJohannesburg, but via Harare where 3976Taffy & Chris MORGAN popped out tohelp me pass the time. Taffy and Chris arequite unchanged since we last met some 7years earlier and since we were stationedtogether at Rusape in 1971 / 72. Taffy toldme of 4221 Ron EAMES death, but on abrighter side, they had just enjoyed a fewdays in the Valley with 3925 Bill and MaryMAY. On arrival at Joburg I was met by5695 Dave SLOMAN, and quite by chancesaw 5023 George O' NEIL who was meet-ing someone else. Dave seems untouchedby time and does not even wear glasses!Dave arranged for me to meet 5676 S T"Paddy" ANDERSON with whom I hadbeen stationed at Tuli in 1960 before hewas whisked away for cattle cordon duties!I also visited 6823 Les THORNBERRYwho was in hospital with some mysteriouslyunidentified illness. Les had been stationedwith me at Rusape and has recently joinedDave SLOMAN at IBM. Les' hospitalisa-tion might continue for some time and I amsure he would welcome mail from formercolleagues. Next to Cape Town where I wasmet by 5217 Nigel HARRIS who wined anddined me. At the airport I met 5780 MarkDOYLE who had twenty minutes overlapbefore his plane departed. Nigel showed meround the fair Cape which has breathtaking scenic views and drives, beforereturning me to the Airport for my flightback to the UK. What a nostalgic trip thatwas!

Frank 4468 and Phil MAGUIRE spenttwo months between April anJ June inAustralia. Initially based in Hervey Bay,some four hours North of Brisbane, Franksays it is so very similar to the Rhodesia we

Tony LAWRENCE's yvife yvorked forDawn's brother-in-law, Both Tony and an-other former BSAP Printer, JOLLIFFE ap-pear to have settled ivcII into the Brisbanearea. Frank recommends the GreyhoundBuses as a cheaper means of travel whichallows one to sec a bit of thc countryside. InSydney they had a sight-seeing trip round amodern Russian submarine which was fas-cinating. They werc offered an AircraftCarrier with aeroplanes for f20 million.(Were they joking, asks Frank?) Their routeback took them via Singapore and Frankcommented, "What a beautifully designedairport terminal. It made Heathrow looklike Paddy's Market. " Thanks for the newsand travel information, Frank.
