Types of Monitors
CRT monitor (Page # 95) A CRT, for cathode-ray tube, is a vacuum
tube used as a display screen in a computer or video display terminal. Images are represented on the screen by individual dots or “picture elements” called pixels. A pixel is the smallest unit on the screen can be turned on and off or made different shades.

Flat-panel Displays(Page # 96)
Flat-panel display - made up of two plates of glass separated by a layer of a substance in which light is manipulated
Categories of LCDActive-matrix - each pixel on the screen is controlled by its own transistorTFT- Thin film transistorPassive-matrix - a transistor controls a whole row or column of pixels

Other Types of monitors
Paper-white displays Creates higher contrast , Used by desktop
publishing specialists, newspaper or magazine compositor and other persons who creates high quality printed documents
Electroluminescent Displays(ELDs) Uses phosphorescent film held between two
sheets of glass. A grid of wires sends current through the film to create an image
Plasma DisplayThese are display devices that use gas plasma technology

Qualities of Monitors
Size The Larger the size the bigger the image Measured diagonally
Resolution Sharpness and clarity of image Number of pixels on the screen 640X480 means 640 pixels horizontally
and 480 pixels vertically Video graphics array

Refresh Rate Number of times per second that the
electron gun scans pixels on screen Measured in Hertz
Dot Pitch The distance between the liked colored
phosphor dots of adjacent pixels Measured as a fraction of a
millimeter(mm)

Printers
A printer produces text and graphics on a physical medium Printed information is called a hard copy,
or printout Landscape or portrait orientation
Impact printers Non impact printers

Impact Printers
Impact printers form characters and graphics on a piece of paper by striking a mechanism against an inked ribbon that physically contacts the paper Dot matrix printer▪ Line Printer▪ Band Printers

Speakers, Headphones, and Earbuds An audio output device produces music,
speech, or other sounds Most computer users attach speakers to
their computers to: Generate higher-quality sounds for playing games Interact with multimedia presentations Listen to music View movies
Headphones are speakers that cover your head or are placed outside of the ear
Earbuds (also called earphones) rest inside the ear canal
