Present Jan Helge Boslashhn Andrea Brunais Brian Calhoun (for Alan Grant) Tom Campbell Kristy Collins John Dooley Michele James Deramo (for Jim Dubinsky) Bill Knocke Thomas Olson (for Bob Smith) Fred Piercy Bill Pierson John Provo Sharon Scott (for Frank Smith) Susan Short Jeri Childers (guest) Welcome John Dooley welcomed everyone self-introductions were made and the group was invited to make announcements Kristy Collins announced that the registration for Kids Tech University for spring starts Monday December 6 2010 She passed around a flyer (see attached) Michele James Deramo spoke about the Global Giving Open Challenge in December which will help raise money to benefit family literacy programs for refugee women and children She passed around a post card (see attached) Susan Short spoke about the Sesquicentennial Civil War event that will take place May 17 2011 at Cassell Coliseum they are preparing for 5000 participants with Bud Robertson leading this event Feature Program Economic Development at Virginia Tech John Provo presented a PowerPoint presentation including background information about Economic Development at Virginia Tech (see attached) Economic Development has many connections throughout the Commonwealth These connections include active projects in Arlington Petersburg Blacksburg Danville and across Southwest and Southside regions The Office of Economic Development is working to bring together partnerships and teams between Virginia Tech and communities across the Commonwealth Discussion Items a) Engagement Academy Team for 2011
Jeri Childers spoke about the Engagement Academy for 2011 and passed around a post card (see attached) She described the Academy as a week-long institute where Virginia Tech meets with external university leaders nation-wide to ldquobuild institutional capacity for engagement within the context of the institutionrsquos strategic planrdquo Jeri is requesting the colleges who have not been represented (2008-College of Natural Resources (and Environment) 2009-College of Architecture and Urban Studies 2010-College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences) to contact her for the 2011 team

a) Inn at Virginia Tech Incentive Program
Susan Short spoke about the incentive program at The Inn at Virginia Tech She indicated that there was money available for new opportunities at The Inn and would like to bring new programs to The Inn There is an on-line proposal abstract the
deadline is February 1 2011 Communications have gone out to the Deans and Associate Deans
b) Activities from 2010 Engagement Academy Team Fred Piercy spoke about the 2010 Engagement Academy Team which includes Susan Asselin Fred Piercy Debra Stoudt and Kris Tilley-Lubbs The team is in the process of developing a white paper for Engaged Scholarship They are getting the information together and working on a PowerPoint They also hope to get the past Outreach award winners together to talk about thoughts on white paper
c) Outreach Communications Andrea Brunais passed around a screen shot (attached) of the Outreach home page People have the opportunity to contribute stories regarding their efforts with Outreach and she encouraged others to submit nominations for the Engaged Scholarship Spotlight
d) Cooperative Extension Restructuring Brian Calhoun presented a PowerPoint on the Cooperative Extension Restructuring process (attached) He indicated that they have redefined their area and products and have designed for consumers to access their products A summary of some of the figures 106 local offices 12 ARECS 6 4-H Educational Centers 4 District Operational Centers Every year they will plan to look at the needs of each locality and have had a $55 million reduction in Agency 229 Cooperative Extension has eliminated low-priority programs and duplication of efforts in areas The restructuring process began in in April 2009 and they have identified strategic plan focus areas

KTU is a semester-long educational research program developed by
the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at Virginia Tech in partnership with
the Virginia 4-H that puts scientists and engineers in front of children
to encourage the explorati on of intriguing topics in Science Technology
Engineering and Mathematics
Afte r the success of KTU in 2009 amp 2010 we are excited to announce
the 2011 Spring semester event happening at Virginia Tech for kids
between the ages of 9 and 12 (on September 30 2010) living within a
four-hour drive of the VT campus KTU is held in the same campus lecture
halls used by VT students Hands-on activities follow each storytelling
session and an online component continues the interest and excitement
after the campus activities have been completed
bullbull As a parent I want to expose my girls to as ma ny potenti al career fi elds and learn ing environments as possi ble Through the KTlJ hands-on labs and activities my children were given
KTU is a family even t and parents are encouraged to attend and watch the
storytel ling sessions In a separate hall on the VT campus Regardless of
whether or not the guardian attends the lecture all guardians are responsible for escorting their child to lunch and the afternoon hands-on activity

Agricultural Research and Extension Center helped assess tourist interest in and willingness to pay for interactive vacations on Tangier Island Va that demonstrate how watermen make a living from the Chesapeake Bay
bull Since the study McGehee says the Tangier Island watermen have successfully implemented experiential tourism for the past two seasons ldquoThe project has gained media attention including a Wall Street Journal story which has helped increase the number of visitors participating in experiential tourism on Tangier What I am most pleased about is that the resulting tourism activity is sustainable and manageable for the community It hasnrsquot changed what is unique and special about the island but it has enhanced in a small way the quality of life for the watermen participating in the projectrdquo

Agricultural Research and Extension Center helped assess tourist interest in and willingness to pay for interactive vacations on Tangier Island Va that demonstrate how watermen make a living from the Chesapeake Bay
bull Since the study McGehee says the Tangier Island watermen have successfully implemented experiential tourism for the past two seasons ldquoThe project has gained media attention including a Wall Street Journal story which has helped increase the number of visitors participating in experiential tourism on Tangier What I am most pleased about is that the resulting tourism activity is sustainable and manageable for the community It hasnrsquot changed what is unique and special about the island but it has enhanced in a small way the quality of life for the watermen participating in the projectrdquo

KTU is a semester-long educational research program developed by
the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at Virginia Tech in partnership with
the Virginia 4-H that puts scientists and engineers in front of children
to encourage the explorati on of intriguing topics in Science Technology
Engineering and Mathematics
Afte r the success of KTU in 2009 amp 2010 we are excited to announce
the 2011 Spring semester event happening at Virginia Tech for kids
between the ages of 9 and 12 (on September 30 2010) living within a
four-hour drive of the VT campus KTU is held in the same campus lecture
halls used by VT students Hands-on activities follow each storytelling
session and an online component continues the interest and excitement
after the campus activities have been completed
bullbull As a parent I want to expose my girls to as ma ny potenti al career fi elds and learn ing environments as possi ble Through the KTlJ hands-on labs and activities my children were given
KTU is a family even t and parents are encouraged to attend and watch the
storytel ling sessions In a separate hall on the VT campus Regardless of
whether or not the guardian attends the lecture all guardians are responsible for escorting their child to lunch and the afternoon hands-on activity

Agricultural Research and Extension Center helped assess tourist interest in and willingness to pay for interactive vacations on Tangier Island Va that demonstrate how watermen make a living from the Chesapeake Bay
bull Since the study McGehee says the Tangier Island watermen have successfully implemented experiential tourism for the past two seasons ldquoThe project has gained media attention including a Wall Street Journal story which has helped increase the number of visitors participating in experiential tourism on Tangier What I am most pleased about is that the resulting tourism activity is sustainable and manageable for the community It hasnrsquot changed what is unique and special about the island but it has enhanced in a small way the quality of life for the watermen participating in the projectrdquo

Agricultural Research and Extension Center helped assess tourist interest in and willingness to pay for interactive vacations on Tangier Island Va that demonstrate how watermen make a living from the Chesapeake Bay
bull Since the study McGehee says the Tangier Island watermen have successfully implemented experiential tourism for the past two seasons ldquoThe project has gained media attention including a Wall Street Journal story which has helped increase the number of visitors participating in experiential tourism on Tangier What I am most pleased about is that the resulting tourism activity is sustainable and manageable for the community It hasnrsquot changed what is unique and special about the island but it has enhanced in a small way the quality of life for the watermen participating in the projectrdquo

Agricultural Research and Extension Center helped assess tourist interest in and willingness to pay for interactive vacations on Tangier Island Va that demonstrate how watermen make a living from the Chesapeake Bay
bull Since the study McGehee says the Tangier Island watermen have successfully implemented experiential tourism for the past two seasons ldquoThe project has gained media attention including a Wall Street Journal story which has helped increase the number of visitors participating in experiential tourism on Tangier What I am most pleased about is that the resulting tourism activity is sustainable and manageable for the community It hasnrsquot changed what is unique and special about the island but it has enhanced in a small way the quality of life for the watermen participating in the projectrdquo

Agricultural Research and Extension Center helped assess tourist interest in and willingness to pay for interactive vacations on Tangier Island Va that demonstrate how watermen make a living from the Chesapeake Bay
bull Since the study McGehee says the Tangier Island watermen have successfully implemented experiential tourism for the past two seasons ldquoThe project has gained media attention including a Wall Street Journal story which has helped increase the number of visitors participating in experiential tourism on Tangier What I am most pleased about is that the resulting tourism activity is sustainable and manageable for the community It hasnrsquot changed what is unique and special about the island but it has enhanced in a small way the quality of life for the watermen participating in the projectrdquo

Agricultural Research and Extension Center helped assess tourist interest in and willingness to pay for interactive vacations on Tangier Island Va that demonstrate how watermen make a living from the Chesapeake Bay
bull Since the study McGehee says the Tangier Island watermen have successfully implemented experiential tourism for the past two seasons ldquoThe project has gained media attention including a Wall Street Journal story which has helped increase the number of visitors participating in experiential tourism on Tangier What I am most pleased about is that the resulting tourism activity is sustainable and manageable for the community It hasnrsquot changed what is unique and special about the island but it has enhanced in a small way the quality of life for the watermen participating in the projectrdquo

bull Since the study McGehee says the Tangier Island watermen have successfully implemented experiential tourism for the past two seasons ldquoThe project has gained media attention including a Wall Street Journal story which has helped increase the number of visitors participating in experiential tourism on Tangier What I am most pleased about is that the resulting tourism activity is sustainable and manageable for the community It hasnrsquot changed what is unique and special about the island but it has enhanced in a small way the quality of life for the watermen participating in the projectrdquo
