DUNGANNON

Adults and youth (rising high school freshmen) join with other churches in Region V in late July to early August to participate in home construction projects for low-income families in Dungannon, Virginia.

Contact Betsy Watts at [email protected] or by calling 703-409-2035.

PHILADELPHIA

The Stenton Family Manor is a family homeless shelter in northern Philadelphia. Every summer, there are a large number of children living in the shelter with little to no programming planned for them over the long summer months. St. Anne's teens plan activities, games and lessons to help provide structure and fun for the children in the shelter, for the week we're there and beyond with ideas and materials we leave behind.

Contact St. Anne’s office at [email protected] or by calling 703-437-6530.

SMILES FOR LIBERIA

Founded at St. Anne’s in 2007 with our own Dr. Ajavon-Cox, Smiles for Liberia brings dental care to children and adults in Liberia.

Contact Ayele Ajavon-Cox at [email protected] or by calling 703-945-3609.

Local ADVENT CONSPIRACY

We all want our Christmas to be a lot of things. Full of joy. Memories. Happiness. Above all, we want it to be about Jesus. Advent Conspiracy is a movement designed to help us all slow down and experience a Christmas worth remembering. But doing this means doing things a little differently. A little creatively. Giving a gift that will change someone’s life. Every year St. Anne’s celebrates the Advent Conspiracy movement by encouraging our congregation to give to causes that support our mission.

Contact Tim Barwick at [email protected] or by calling 703-437-6530.

BACK TO SCHOOL BACKPACKS

Remember the excitement and anticipation of going back to school: reuniting with old friends, making new ones, getting to know new teachers and the challenges of the new year? For many families the challenge is to pay for the items that are needed. We participate with Cornerstones in their Back to School program. They have a resource that supplies the classroom supplies but they need good quality backpacks. They also collect underwear for elementary school children and $25 Payless gift cards for footwear. There will be a collection bin in the Narthex.

Contact Kimberly Cowell-Myers at 703-789-4068.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS DRIVE

In connection with Cornerstones (formerly Reston Interfaith), St. Anne’s collects Christmas gifts for children who participate in various Cornerstones programs. Wish lists are posted at St. Anne’s in November.

WHY IS OUTREACH IMPORTANT?

At St. Anne’s, we believe that we are called into a special relationship

with God, with each other, and with all of God’s children in our own community

and throughout the world.  We work to respond to God’s call wherever it may lead

us.  We are actively engaged in our community, taking our sense of mission from the needs and

hopes of those whom God has given us as friends and neighbors. In faithful and joyous response to

that call, we seek In our OUTREACH to others:

To identify and make available to our parishioners opportunities to become personally involved in

hands-on projects of ministry to others;

To recognize that our call to ministry extends beyond our local community and to seek

opportunities for active involvement by our parishioners in the work of the Church

throughout our own country and throughout the world; and to share the

challenge of the Gospel with others through prayer and action.

“The choice is not between ‘faith’ and ‘deeds’, for it is by our deeds

that we express our faith and make it real in the life of

others and the world.” - Rabbi Jonathan Sacks

ORGANIZATIONS WE WORK WITH:

FACETS

FACETS opens doors by helping parents, their children, and individuals who suffer the effects of poverty in Fairfax County.

FACETS work towards a day when everyone in Fairfax County has access to adequate and affordable housing and nobody is homeless. They seek to engage and educate our community in providing long-term solutions and resources to break the cycle of poverty for our neighbors in need.

St. Anne’s and FACETS have been working together for over 20 years.

INTERNATIONAL

CUBA

This is our newest mission trip opportunity. In 2013 we made our first trip to Cuba on a scouting mission, where we were able to visit ten faith communities and begin to establish relationships with the Episcopal Church on the island. We had the privilege of befriending the Bishop of Cuba, who provided insight into her vision for the Episcopal Church of Cuba. Going forward we will likely have a faith community who we partner with long-term, and will also likely be involved in getting the youth ministries camp up and running. Cuba mission trips will include construction and outreach work in the community. There will also be the opportunity for exploring and learning about the culture of the island of Cuba.

Contact Eleanor Ware at [email protected] or by calling 571-235-3277.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Supporting the Episcopal Diocese of the Dominican Republic, this trip occurs between the end of June and the end of July each year. Parish adults and youth (rising 11th graders) work a portion of each day on one or more construction projects and spend the remainder of the day organizing and presenting Vacation Bible School for children at Cristo Salvador Church in the neighborhood of Yagüita del Pastor.

Contact Martha Furniss at [email protected] or by calling 703-481-5899.

THE CLOSET

The Closet is a thrift store in Herndon that supports and is supported by faith communities in Northern Virginia. The volunteers sort, price and bag merchandize, tidy the shelves and racks and generally make themselves useful. You can also drop in during non sale hours and days to price and do the multitude of other things that have to be done.

Contact Claudia Patil by calling 703-391-1705 or Dick Christensen at [email protected] or by calling 703-437-1479.

COOL KIDS AT THE SHELTER

Every kid deserves a fun-filled summer. St Anne's can help make the summer cooler for kids in need. The Embry Rucker Shelter serves children of a variety of ages. Each child receives passes to Reston's pools. We provide items like swim diapers, sunscreen and beach towels. Of course, adults need to cool off, too so individual bottled water, adult sized flip flops, and rain ponchos are also helpful.

Contact Jennifer Gartin at [email protected].

(SUPPORTING PEOPLE WITH) DISABILITIES

St. Annes provides loving ministry to adults with disabilities by working with SPARC, an organization that provides life skills training, daily activities and an outreach community of its own. SPARC's unique "Circuit Train Your Brain" model allows participants to customize their experiences. SPARC also has a robust outreach program that includes making sandwiches for the shelter and micro-entrepreneurial work. St. Anne's congregants join with SPARC on these outreach missions to help meet both organization's missions.

FACETS HOT MEALS

FACETS (Fairfax Area Christian Emergency & Transitional Services) provide hot meals to homeless families who are temporarily housed in motels. Join our team of parishioners who prepare and deliver a complete dinner to FACETS families on the first Wednesday of each month. Contact Roger Brown at [email protected] or by calling 703-435-9671 or Angie Gray at [email protected] or by calling 703-435-1276.

FOOD PANTRY

Our Food Pantry supplies over 1500 bags of food a year to local families and the elderly. The food comes from your generous donations. We need over 20 volunteers a month to support this mission so we’re also looking for volunteers for several different activities including bagging, shelving and distribution. This is a great opportunity to involve the entire family in serving the community.

Contact Susanne Walsh at [email protected] or by calling 703-435-0568.

FRONT PORCH SINGERS

“Helping folks remember through music.” This spirited group of singers and musicians take familiar, especially older traditional, folk and pop (primarily from the 1900s to the 1940s) music to assisted living communities and similar venues for sing-alongs and fellowship. There are no rehearsals or auditions; fellowship in singing with residents is the emphasis. Adults and kids of all musical levels are welcome; we are always in search of a few additional guitarists and similar instrumentalists as well as singers.

VIRGINIA INTERFAITH

VICPP is an interfaith alliance of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim communities in Virginia (including St. Anne’s and the Diocese) which prepares for active involvement in Virginia’s General Assembly. Issues for concentrated attention, generally on one form or another of social justice. are selected by the membership. Updates throughout the summer and weekly during the General Assembly Session will be posted on VICPP’s website (www.learnprayact.org.)

WALK TO END HOMELESSNESS

Join us to raise awareness and funds for Cornerstones’ (formerly Reston Interfaith) programs to prevent homelessness and provide affordable housing in our community. A wonderful community and family event we take a route that starts at Embry Rucker Family Shelter (named after our first Rector), leads through Reston Town Center to St. Anne’s and then returns to the shelter, about 2 miles.

Contact Pat Sartorius at [email protected] or by calling 703-674-6933.

WORKS SUNDAY

Works Sunday is an annual day of service in Northern Virginia, including many activities in the Reston and Herndon communities. (www.workssunday.org.) Volunteers from St. Anne's partner with volunteers from Herndon Friends and St. Thomas a Becket Catholic Church to make bag lunches for the Embry Rucker Homeless Shelter.

SUMMER FEEDING PROGRAM

The Fairfax County Summer Feeding Program and its partner organizations reach out to children who are eligible for free or reduced price lunches during the school year. At the Cedar Ridge Community Center, where Cornerstones (formerly Reston Interfaith) sponsors the summer lunch program, St. Anne's volunteers help to serve the meals Monday through Friday during the summer vacation.

Contact Carol Hurlburt at [email protected] or by calling 703-264-9054.

THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE

No one should go hungry on Thanksgiving. Sadly for some in our community a Thanksgiving dinner just isn’t possible. Working with Cornerstones we gather food to contribute to hundreds of local families in need. Look for the boxes in November!

Contact Robin and Chip George at [email protected] or by calling 703-925-9143.

THEATER SERIES

The St. Anne’s Interfaith Theater Series is intended to introduce participants to important questions about faith and justice through live theater. Plays are selected because they present questions about faith and social justice in new ways. We try, whenever we can arrange it, to schedule a short discussion with cast members, or just ourselves, immediately after each play. In addition, of course, just going to a live performance is a source of fellowship and a way to get to know each other outside the sanctuary.

Contact Lorraine Cross at [email protected].

GLEANING

After the regular harvest from July to November local farmers are left with produce in the fields that is not economical for them to gather. The Gleaning program allows local faith communities to gather together and bring teams in to collect produce for those in need.

Contact Amber Gilson at [email protected] or by calling 386-852-5821.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Come bring your time and skills (we welcome both “skilled” and “learning- to-be-skilled”!) to help Habitat for Humanity in its goal to make affordable home ownership in Northern Virginia a reality. Habitat Homeowners commit to at least 300 hours of sweat equity, while helping rally community volunteers to build homes that are decent, safe and affordable. Major construction tasks involve building new single family homes and renovating existing homes. Join us! Come one time, or come regularly.

Contact Laurie Corkey at [email protected] or by calling 703-435-0191.

HEALTHWORKS OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA

HealthWorks for Northern Virginia provides quality medical, dental and behavioral health care services to anyone in need, regardless of age or ability to pay. Volunteers provide administrative assistance, translation services and assistance to the clients during clinic visits.

HYPOTHERMIA December through March are the coldest months of the year. This is the time of the year that people living on the margins need our support the most. St. Anne’s feels that our work on this mission is crucial to the survival of the community around us. For one week a year Epiphany Episcopal Church in Franklin Farms, VA runs a temporary shelter. We help them to transport, feed, support and entertain the homeless staying at their shelter.

Contact David Safford at [email protected].

JENNIFER MITCHELL SCHOLARSHIP

St. Anne’s joins five other Reston-area religious congregations annually to make scholarship awards to high school seniors from South Lakes and Herndon High Schools. The scholarship fund was established to recognize students who have attained a solid record of achievement despite economic, family, linguistic, or other difficulties that would have impeded less dedicated and determined students. The fund is named after Jennifer Mitchell, who was a high school senior when she died in an automobile accident in 1990. St. Anne’s has participated since the inception of the fund. St. Anne’s also hosts a reception for the students, their families, and members of the Scholarship Committee to recognize their achievements.

Contact Connie Pettinger at [email protected] or by calling 703-481-2930.

OUR NIGHTLY BREAD

Every day local eating establishments are forced to throw away any unsold food. Working with our local Panera we pickup their end-of-day baked goods which we package and transport to those in need in our local community. This is great if you are a “night-person” who is available around 10pm. it takes about 45 minutes, slightly less time and more fun if you bring a helper! Volunteers work on a rotation basis so you will pickup every 4-6 weeks.

Contact Laurie Corkey at [email protected].

RELAY FOR LIFE

The annual Reston Relay for Life is an American Cancer Society event established over 20 years ago to raise awareness and solicit contributions for a cure. The Reston Relay takes place each May at South Lakes High School, however the team is active from January through June each year. Participants devote time to walking/running the track in honor or memory of those fighting or lost to cancer. A full weekend includes camping, fundraisers, musical and other entertainment. Hundreds of teams representing cancer survivors have raised millions to fund research, outreach, and patient services. Along with Reston’s Used Book Store, St. Anne's sponsors The Grateful Living team.

Contact Ray Walser at [email protected] or by calling 703-402-8369.

SANDWICHES FOR THE SHELTER

We make bag lunches to help support the Embry Rucker Community Shelter which accommodates families with children and adults without children. It takes us around 90 minutes to complete the work. Children old enough to pack a bag lunch are more than welcome!

MISSION POSSIBLE

This one week program in the summer is for rising 6-8th graders and is designed to give them a chance to go beyond the walls of St. Anne’s to serve our broader community. For many, this is their first St. Anne’s mission experience. Some of the past service opportunities have included volunteering for Embry Rucker Homeless Shelter, SPIRIT Open Equestrian Program, The Closet, Habitat for Humanity, Capital Area Food Bank, The Lake Anne Fellowship House, Reston Association, and Sunrise Senior Living.

KNITTERS

St. Anne's Knitters meets on the second Thursday of the month at 7:30 pm in the library for fellowship and to knit or crochet baby blankets and other layette items for needy families whose children are born at Inova Fairfax Hospital. This ministry was started by longtime St. Anne's administrative assistant and member Peg Brown after she learned that some families had to take their babies home wrapped in towels. Before her death, Peg provided more than 1,000 blankets to the hospital, and we continue this ministry in her memory. We can provide instruction if you want to join the group.

Contact Carol Hurlburt at [email protected] or by calling 703-264-9054.

LUNCH FOR THE SOUL

Since 2006 Trinity Presbyterian Church in Herndon has provided the day laborers in our community with a hot, nutritious meal and a Spanish worship service every Wednesday at noon. Teams of volunteers from local churches including St. Anne’s prepare and provide the meals.

Contact Katrina Alexander at [email protected].

MEALS ON WHEELS

St. Anne's arranges for volunteers during August as substitutes for regular drivers who are taking a summer break. You can volunteer to deliver meals by signing up on the sign-sheets that will be available in July and throughout August or by volunteering to be called as substitutes.

ORGANIZATIONS WE WORK WITH:

CORNERSTONES

St. Anne’s is a founding member of Cornerstones, a nonprofit organization that promotes self-sufficiency by providing support and advocacy for those in need of food, shelter, affordable housing, quality childcare, and other human services.

They remain firmly rooted in the Reston community and embrace founder Robert E. Simon’s principle of inclusivity. They apply this value - that all may “live, work, play and serve” - in the many

communities where they operate.
