OV-chipcard
Important reason for the introduction of the OV-chipcard system: public safety in transport
• Improving the security in Rotterdam is one of the priorities of the local government.
• A closed metro system is the base for security management in public transport.
• Gates can only be opened using a valid ticket. Less incidents caused by fare-evaders.
OV-chipcard
Advantages of the OV-chipcard for the PTO
RET• Less fare-evaders.
• Improve the security; less incidents and vandalism.• Management information.
• Easier for customers to use public transport.
National• Card integration in combination with tariff differentiation.
OV-chipcard
The OV-chipcard
• The OV-chipcard is a plastic smart card with a chip inside.
• The OV-chipcard can be loaded with euro’s and travelling products.
• The chip and antenna inside the card are not visible.
• The chip works contactless; passengers can keep the card in their wallet or coat while checking in and out.
OV-chipcard
Advantages of the OV-chipcard for customers
• Easy– card is contactless and can be used in all the Dutch public transport modes – not necessary to think about ‘zones’ and ‘strippen’ (= difficult part of current tariff system)
• Fair– difficult to travel without having paid because of the gates (closed system) – fare is calculated exactly; tariff per distance travelled
• Smart– OV-chipcard calculates the exact fare– PTO has information which makes it easier to respond to customer demand
• Safe– difficult to travel without having paid because of the closed system – less fare-evaders, means less incidents and vandalism
• Quick– check-in and check-out is faster using an OV-chipcard – autoload is possible
